Roo Encounters
« on: June 17, 2019, 09:00:37 PM »
The trouble with riding home at this time of the year is roos out on the road as well. I took my usual route home tonight on the Old Princes Highway from Murray Bridge and about 10 minutes in coming down Callington Hill had the fright of a Roo coming on to the road heading straight for me.

Extremely lucky that it changed route slightly as we saw each other, so it didn't hit the front wheel, but did not me side on. Luckily for me , I kept my line and speed and despite taking a heavy knock, managed to ride though it. Continued down the hill till I could safely stop, assess I was all there and then rode back up to where we collided. I was lucky to find the main bit taken out. Maybe I can find the other piece in daylight.

Driver stopped and put the Roo out, severely injured.

Thanks to the bike gods for making a solid, heavy bike, and for Highway Blades. Photos show where it hit and the piece taken out.

Lucky man Shillas, and well ridden. There are enough peanuts on the road without the wildlife joining in.

Glad to hear you're alright and rermained upright.  Why can't roos be more like goats and mind their own business on the side of the road?

Good to hear that you are okay and the damage isn't too bad :thumbs

You did very well to ride through it and keep your wits about you, maintaining your line and speed then continuing on until it is safe to stop are things that are not easy to do after a shock like that.

Stopped at the site on the way to work this morning - in the car.  Found a bit of plastic from the fairing, some black plastic and a piece of what may be headlight glass. I'll go over the bike tonight to see what belongs & where when I do a full check of the bike.

It looks like it hit me while on the ground - the highway blade bolt ripped its hip. Another extremely fortunate part of the event. If it had hit while in the air, would have knocked me flying, or if had hit the front tyre or front of bike, I also would have gone flying. Also thankful that I was riding an ST - a less powerful and lighter bike wouldn't have stood up to that knock. I'm kicking myself that I didn't have the go-pro running.

While I remained upright, I think holding the bike through it has left me a bit stiff and sore, my right wrist is not the best - but no breaks, grazes or worse.

I've just apologised to the lotto syndicate at work for tonight's $70 million draw - I think I've used up everyone's luck.

Won't be riding on the back route after dark again for a while and probably will be ruled out of far rides and ironbutts.

More detailed look over the bike tonight now that things (ie. me) are a bit calmer.

A number of cracks in the left hand side fairing and a bit more plastic missing than I realised. While some could probably be welded, there would be a few gaps in a couple of spots where I couldn't find the pieces.

Might be getting in touch with Shannon's, the structural integrity of the fairing definitely not as good as it should be.

Sorry Stinky Pete, took your ST1300 without impact from all your long distance riding, I get it and bam, 12 months later, I'm using it to go spotlighting. (thankfully the spotlights helped me see it, so I had time to prepare, not a complete surpise)

The extra Photon Canons and LED headlight upgrade did exctly what they were installed for, if they gave you a few extra seconds to avoid the "T-Bone" and make it a glancing blow.   :thumbsup    I would much rather hear that you are searching for a new Middle Cowl, than to hear that you went over the bars and down the road.   If I can asssit in any way, just let me know.   Artini Crash on South Road have done a couple of paint jobs for me and do great paint matching work.

Keen to find out how it works out with Shannons. I am also insured with them luckily, have not needed to claim. Good luck.
