Looking to add Cruise Control
« on: August 14, 2014, 12:32:26 AM »
I have been looking to add cruise control to my bike since an unfortunate conversation with someone on the side of the road near Southern Cross    :law :law
Have had a look around and cannot justify $1000 for a unit and found this Rostra one on an American site.
What are your thoughts ???
Has anyone done this before ???
Who in WA wants to help ...  ????   LOL ....

Did you notice the disclaimer on their website

Motorcycle, ATV, Recreational and Foreign Vehicle Notes
We do not recommend using any Rostra cruise control systems on motorcycle, ATV, or other non-automotive applications as we do not validate the operation of these units on these vehicles. Due to safety concerns surrounding these installations, Rostra representatives are unable to provide technical support on these applications.

Yes but quite a few are fitted and seem to have no problems.

Here's a question...
Has anyone in Australia installed any other cruise control then the MCCruise?
If so, which one, how much and where from?

I find it hard to believe that the prices for the MCCruise haven't come down in price over time as it's not really new technology.

I had an earlier electronic version (no magnets in drive shaft) of one of the ones in the link below installed on my previous AU Falcon when I first bought it for $500 fitted and it's still working as good today as it was ten years ago (the current owner works in our local supermarket). Unlike the factory fitted cruise in our territory the Autron one remembers the last set speed even when the ignition is turned off.

http://www.autron.com.au/pages/Auscruise/Vacuum.php

I'm was tempted to get one of these and fit to my 1100 but I've had a throttle lock fitted for 8 years and haven't seen the purchase of a proper cruise control as a necessary purchase.

It's another option for anyone thinking of not getting the MCCruise.

I've been looking at these and wondering:
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/201131982245?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

coupled with this (if the one in the kit isn't waterproof):
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/201131203011?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

I think these are the same as supplied by the US company "Murph's Kits" and get talked about a lot as a MC cruise control. Of course, there will always be the disclaimers and it isn't something to tackle unless you have a good understanding of how they work and work hard to avoid the pitfalls.....

The number of photo opportunities I have been thru, and gone past so many speed traps, I think both of my MCCruise controls have already paid for themselves ( on both my 1100 and 1300 ).

Totally justifies the price in my book.

Hey STray, great to hear from you. I was speaking to Yorkie yesterday and he also raised the point that noone seems to have had major issues with the MC cruise and the small issues have been well addressed by a local support. Paying trial and error with lower priced items may actually cost me more in the long run. Therefore I am looking to save  my pennies and get the MC Cruise unit. Thanks for everyone's input. As always it is invaluable.
I don't suppose you want to sell the one from the 1100 do you Ray???

Pezzz, personally, I think it is a good decision, having had one on the 1100 and the 1300, I would not be without one.  Like a number of devices some of us place on our bikes this one has a hidden advantage, it adds to the a number of other things that help manage fatigue.  Anything that takes away stress on the mind and body, especially if you are involved in LDRiding, is always a plus in my mind.

I have only ever had two issues with an McCruise. First was the solenoids got a buit gummed up, but this was easily cleaned (McCruise can provide instructions) Secon was a magnet from the rear wheel went missing (how I don't know as they are hard to remove) so inconsistent operation. McCruise helped me reset the dip switches to work with 3 magnets (something undocumented, and the settings vary according to the model of the computer). Worked better than ever.  And my McCruise on the ST1100 was off Lionel's first ST1100, so had done plenty of distance (140,000kms or so before I got it, then I did 100,000kms or so)

Bringellian - AKA Mike Woodward, AKA the Farkle Fitter- fitted one of the earlier non electronic vacuum type kits to his (at that time) ST1100 from Murph's Kits http://www.murphskits.com/catalog/  for around the $200 mark. Unless I miss my guess, I think it's on Single's bike now. He'd be able to tell in greater detail how good it is (or isn't), but from what I remember Mike saying, it was exceptionally accurate and able to be increased or decreased in increments of +/- 2KPH on the fly, same as a car.

Marcus' post re. the disclaimer about it not being being recommended for bikes is true but he/they have no qualms about selling them for this purpose  ;-* It's just to cover their arses, but at the same time, they promote one of their customers' instructions on how to fit to bikes in general

The best things about a McCruise is that they are plug and play.
The instructions are easy to understand and the phone back up is second to none.

How long are you keeping your bike for would be a question I would ask yourself. More than a couple of years, pay the extra and get a great product.
McCruise has a huge following in the states.

Already have a throttle lock that works well. I want full cruise control to relieve wrist fatigue as well as wallet. I found on Border Run my wrist got sore even with throttle lock as I was adjusting throttle often with lock on for minute adjustments back and forward.

I can't be bothered doing that with mine (unless there's someone close behind me). I just set and forget, the speed you lose going up a hill, you gain when going down and being aware of not exceeding state limit as well.

That was the main reason why I changed to a cruise control. If you are riding with someone who has cruise you are forever adjusting the throttle lock.

Even more important on long weekend rides. In the west we get double demerits for speeding.

I deduce the two magnets that are normally strapped around the driveshaft will be attached to the back wheel instead.  That should provide the speed indication required for operation.  If it didn't pulse fast enough, two more magnets could be applied.
For the modern man who lives in the city, riding a bike might be one of the only ways to escape the humdrum monotony. To take off and ride. To be both at one with nature and one with the bike. To feel masculine. Adam Piggott

They recommend 4 magnets. Apparently you can get a size that fits inside the hex head of the bikes that hold the brake rotors on.

The McCruise uses magnets inside the bolts that hold on the rear rotor.  It can work with all six magnets in, or with 3 magnets if you adjust the sensitivity settings. 4 magnets would be a funny setting as they would not be evenly spaced, which is crucial. It is usually just a matter of selecting the right setting on the computer to get it to work.  I have some spares if you need to size them up.
