Rear spline grease
« on: May 02, 2012, 10:33:24 PM »
As you know, many stay awake at night worrying about putting the right moly grease with at least 40% molybdenum disulphide on their rear splines. Stands to reason as otherwise they may be worse for wear eventually.

BUT...in the Honda manual NLGI #2 grease is also specified as appropriate. This specification is all about extreme pressure and anti wear.

In the interests of our members (had time to kill waiting for the car suspension to be upgraded) I found at least two what might be readily available sources of the NLGI 2 grease:

In a specialist tool shop they had this http://www.inox-mx3.com/product_detail.php?productID=4 made by the same people as the fantastic INOX spray lube (great for locks, hinges, switch blokes etc etc). They had it in tubs as well as the cylinders.  Around $20. Bearing shops and other may carry it.

But probably more importantly a motorcycle shop actually had some! (they probably didn't know but hey..).  MOTUL do a NLGI 2 grease in a 1 kg tin for around $23..how cheap is that! (even a retired person could buy some).  It was in a plain tin but had a label on it showing the NLGI 2 specification.  So if your local shop has Motul, they might have it or can order it. Don't confuse them by asking for the rear spline grease, unless the shops have finally woken up to this.

I will get a tin tomorrow and post up what it looks like.  And for those who are in the know, Growly works at this shop so I said hello briefly before he had to get back to work.
