Brake Pads and Rotors
« on: May 14, 2012, 03:23:41 PM »
I needed new rear pads for the ST1300A and did an eBay search and found a company here in Brendale, just a few kays from my place!
They have a shopfront and are very obliging.  I picked up a full set of sintered pads for $91.85.  Gotta love that!  The set for the 1100 is the same.

Their organic pads are about half that price.

They also supply new rotors at $200 each for the front and $230 for the rear- 40% cheaper than OEM, and made to OEM specs.
1100 rotors are $130 each front and $190 rear.

Their website for 1300:  http://metalgear.com.au/view_model_details.php?model_id=4258

and 1100:
http://metalgear.com.au/view_model_details.php?model_id=4255

Check your model, as there are several pages for each.

I loved the service and convenience.  Postage isn't cheap since the items are heavy, but if you're on northside Brissie they're easy to find in an industrial estate (21 Hinkler Court, Brendale, Queensland).

If you're stuck with something besides an ST, they have pads, rotors and sprockets for every make and model.

I have used the metalgear front rotors and pads on the ST1100.  I think I have the organic pads as they came with the new rotors, and don't have the bite of sintered EBC etc that I have used in the past. Mind you the rotors have not worn near as much either!

I bought sintered metal 'Metalgear' pads for my 1100 from them via ebay a while ago. They work fine. I'm happy with them.

I guess if one were to use the sintered pads as gently as necessary to come to a stop equalling the stopping distance of organic pads, the wear shouldn't be excessive, since a similar amount of energy is dissipated.  It's when we use the extra power of the sintered pads to get those great crisp stops that we get stuck into the rotors and tyres.

Just my theory (hopes) anyway.  I'll go back to organic if I'm wrong   :)

Your Honda price is surprisingly good kruz- you sure you didn't take a bunch of your hairy mates in with you looking threatening?  :eek

I think you are right Biggles. When I had the sintered pads in I probably used the brakes harder just because I could.  I know they did not fade even doing a Snowy ride by myself and smelling the brakes at times, but the pads still worked perhaps the better as they got hotter.

Should have mentioned that the sintered pads work better in the wet. The organics have that little lag until they fully kick in - they work but need a warm up I think.

If you are on the northside also check out Mick's Bike and Car Tyres, Johnstone Road, Brendale.  I got the Artrax discs $250 each for the fronts- excellent bite, can't recommend them enough on heavier bikes in the short time I have had them.  I don't like the pads he carries, I generally get him to order Galfers, or go through Superbike Supply for them.

Mick does good prices on tyres and I would have to say unbeatable prices on servicing...

Yes, he uses either PM, Belray or Motul depending on your preference.   I'd be happy to recommend him whether he does or not, genuinely good work and good prices.  And he could do with the work at the moment!

Good stuff give him a buzz I know he does business hours and half saturdays most weeks.  I don't know what viscosity you are running in that at the moment but go to 20w50 at a minimum + a K&N filter (he stocks Hiflo but can order K&N's). If you have issues, particularly notchy gears or the like 25w60.

Don't tell him I sent you else he'll probably charge more!!

Thanks mate, I’ll give him a buzz :phone and advise him to put in 20w50 at a minimum :well and I’ll see what price he can do the K&N filter for >:() (if there isn’t one in the bike already, I’ve been meaning to check but keep forgetting :|||| )

I have met Mick once, the other day I was helping out Harieg with his ST1100 and we needed new sparkplugs so went to Harie’s mechanic Mick :wink1
Nice little place he has, appeared to be a good bloke :thumb

Thanks again Brad :hatwave

Mick's a FarRider from way back and an all-round nice guy.  His mechanic (if it's still the same one) is Lucky, gang-leader of the Weekend Riders, and also a top bloke.

Just fitted front and rear pads to the STead.

Used EBC HH sintered.

They are really grippy. It does warn you on the fine print on the packaging too!

The Metal Gear ones warn you that it will take 300 applications before they are bedded in properly.  I only did the back and found them pretty doughy for a couple of days.  They're getting better.  But I've been meaning to ask the Gurus how long they are usually noisy.  I still get some noise after 850 kays.

It might take a bit longer based on my experince with them.  New pads on an older rotor takes time to bed together, and it pays to go through the heat cycling procedure recommended.  Rear brake is not used near as much so you might need to consciously use it more for a while.

Wandering through Ebay, and came across brake pads for the ST13. A full set of sintered pads for under $60 AU delivered.

Good price!  Metal Gear charged me $91.85 at the shop, and they are heavy items to post!
Comes back to quality, I guess, but presumably "sintered" is "sintered".

I notice that it didn't give the manufacturers name.

Have a look on the Honda PanEuropean Owners Club and the ST-Owners forums, there are some accounts of shonky, cheap pads on them.

Personally, I'd stick with the 'better known' brands.

I got some EBC pads a couple of years ago and have had no problems whatsoever with them.

we all have our likes for tyres, oil, petrol etc et:al
as a condition of rego change over NSW to QLD.
I was required  to replace the back disk and all pads

I went to Metal Gear in Brendale, got rear disk and 6 pads for under $200,
As I am a soft rider I chose organic over sintered
bike handles OK by me

they were fitted by Mick, from Mick's bike and car tyres, also at Brendale
price for all work was reasonable,
oil and filter ((PM oil))
and a new BT023 on the front
he also took my old BT from the Black ST, as I am not keen on Metzeler Marathon
and put it on the back wheel of GoldieST
and swapped the bar risers from BLACK to GoldieST

I'll keep you informed with updates

I have the organic metalgear pads on mine, and they are quite alright (I have never tried OEM Honda, but have used a few sintered pads over the years).  Sintered bite better in the wet on first application, and keep on getting better the hotter they get. Downside, if you use that performance, is accelerated rotor wear.

thanx for that Saaz
the road worthy man said the front disk's were only good for another 3 to 5K
so i chose the softer pads to try and extend the front rotors
