speedo not working
« on: August 13, 2013, 07:44:10 PM »
I have had a look on the net for fixes or hints and hope there are some more here.
the speedo is not working, odometer and other gauges appear ok.

i will check out connections on the right side and attempt to find the sensor at the back to see if any wires are missing, as a last resort I can check the connection on the instrument cluster at the back but if the rest of the gauges are working then that should be ok? are there any other hints please?

Hi TJ189,
I have read lately if you have your tyres changed the sensor can be moved, but you use a 1/8" - 3mm drill bit for gap clearance of the sensor.
BUT, this is coming from an 1100 lover.

Nah- that's for the cruise control sensor.  The ST1300 measures it internally.

If the odo is working then the signal is getting through to some degree. Does the ST13 do an instrument check when it starts up (ie tach and speedo go up to a preset speed or revs? I know my car has a test mode that does this, so you know the instruments are working)  That might indicate whether it is an instrument problem or some sort of fuse/connection problem.  There may be a test mode somewhere in the ST13 for this.

I will do a bit of a check around tomorrow.

After doing some searching, seems that if the odometer is working, then it it is likely the stepper motor for the speedo or part of the circuit board.  If both were not working it would be the speed sensor or a loose connection to the speed sensor. This can be repaired and the speedo calibrated.  Brisbane places I came across that people recommended:

Able Instruments at Loganholme PH;3801 1232

http://www.ottoinstruments.com.au/

Might be worth ringing them up to explain the problem as it would be a common issue for cars and bikes.

And here are some threads on speedo and instrument problems that may be of interest

John, absolutely brilliant,  :-++  haven't confirmed my problem yet but you have found some great information for me, thank you.

It is looking like the speed sensor, everything except the speedo is working on the combo meters (dials and gauges).  checked all the fuses just for peace of mind. Now to find this VSS (vehicle speed sensor).....

I had the same problem - turned out to be the speed sensor.  It is located on the right hand side of the bike, underneath, seating into the gear box and held in with two screws.  One is very easy to remove, the other a pain due to the centre stand.

Replacements can be bought from you local shop for about $150 and are easy to fit... Remember to drain the oil first and save the 'O' ring.  The new one does not have one in the kit.

The connector is a simple two pin plug, behind the fairing on the right hand side.

All up takes about one hour...

Doug, great timing mate, I had just phoned and booked in with the STealer for tomorrow, so now I can call back and cancel the booking, thank you very much.
I will order one and attempt to put it in on the weekend if they have one in stock.  Also thanks for pointing out its location I was searching high and low

I got mine sent from Honda East Toledo, (www.hondaeasttoledo.com) USA for $154.00 inc shipping.  Arrives in four days!  That was when the Aussie $ was a little stronger but does not excuse the crazy prices here!!!

Thanks Streak and Doug.
I have used this mob previously Partzilla.com so I have tried them again $123.72 AU dollars delivered to door, not sure how long though ass the part is listed as ACT meaning the manufacturer is actively making the part, just waiting on their email to advise me.  $72.51 US for the part the rest was delivery.  Stealer $209 AU and I still have to go and pick it up  :|||| I don't think so.

Honda dealer in Toowoomba looks reasonable with the Ozstoc club price

Have fun!  It would be good to know what speed you are about to hit little furry animals at  :wink1 although hopefully you might have an advantage with the recent farkles.
