My ST1300A speedo overreads

I've just bought a nice 08 ST, but it appears the speedo is over reading by almost 10 Km/hr (at 110) when compared with my Garmin GPS.
I've checked the GPS with a second unit in the car and all three coincide.

Any ideas my fellow STers>

All the same. May be not quite 10 over but it is an easy figure to lock into the dial and still be confident you won't make a unwanted donation to the government. Not sure why they read high but they do.

I suspect it's so Honda can't be blamed for your exceeding the speed limit.
You can assume 9 or 10% over-reading throughout the range.

Hi Toddie.  My 2008 is out as well.   110km/h on the GPS = 118 km/h on the ST speedo.   I think we all acknowledge the error and live with it.

Since 1982 - speedos have been legislated to NOT indicate lower than ACTUAL VELOCITY! Before this, it was a manufacturer's 'free for all'. Since then they MUST INDICATE HIGHER VELOCITIES, and are not allowed to show under.

Generally speaking - you should be able to safely (read LEGALLY) calculate a 7% difference - i.e. 107km indicated = 100 actual - BUT......
Some states are lowering the tolerances for applicable fines, in that you could get away with up to 9km/h over the speed limit years ago, now you would get booked for this indiscretion - spesh in Qld and Vic.

So don't push the envelope as you will get NO QUARTER!!! This is even worse for the States that have farmed out certain speed detection offences to private companies where they earn $$$ by fining you - NOT SHOWING LENIENCY!

ADR requirement is for speedo's not to indicate a speed slower than what you are travelling at. On some older vehicles there was a +/- error allowed but those days are long gone.

In my car at 100kph I'm doing 95 according to my GPS and the 1100 is about 93 the last time I checked

I bought a SpeedoHealer . . Easy to instal and program and now my speedo is accurate throughout the range. Side effects tho are the odometers read lower K's and consequently the fuel usage reading is slightly higher. Cost was about $140, ebay from a fellow in Qld.

I knew what the ADR was but this time I couldn't find it.

What ever speed detection method is used none are 100% accurate and generally the percentage error is your favour. There's no guarantee that your GPS is 100% accurate either

My 1300 is 8km high at all speeds.. checked using a few different GPS units and the old distance over time method. I just adjust my riding to suit, but I also have my phone loaded with the tom tom software and turn on speed alert. It doesn't have EVERY speedzone, but 99% are there, and it alerts me if I go 5km over the selected speed.. not perfect, but better than my partners bike which is wrong in every way, but different error each time so you don't really know how bad its out at the time. the fix for hers is also a gps mounted off the handlebars and keeping up with me :)

On distance rides I will use a GPS for the speed reading, setting the cruise, as this is the speed that Police will get on their screen. It's no biggie.
