Top box mount question
« on: September 14, 2015, 10:09:49 AM »
Hi all, I've found a good top box for a good price ($65 52L), however to get any sort of mounting plate (OEM or not) is going to cost triple to cost of the box.. Question is can you mount a top box to the grab rails by some measure?

Andrew, Atoyot is wrecking a ST1300 at the moment.  Send his a PM to see if he still has the mounting plate.

No luck unfortunately.

Try other wreckers.

There's no ready way to attach it to the grab rails.  You could remove the grab rails and manufacture something to use their attach points, but if you're doing that you might as well use the existing attach points and save your pillion seat, which is illegal without grab rails.
For the modern man who lives in the city, riding a bike might be one of the only ways to escape the humdrum monotony. To take off and ride. To be both at one with nature and one with the bike. To feel masculine. Adam Piggott

The OEM rack mounts to the top of the grab rails. There's four bolts that attach the rear of the rails behind the seat and they are covered by a little lift out bit of plastic. The OEM kit supplies the longer bolts and spacers so the rack and its mounting plate sit just above the grab rails. I got mine from David Silver Spares but the rack is no longer available.

If you can get the longer bolts and something to use as spacers (plus washers etc.) you might be able to make up a plate and attach the top case that way.

Is it a Honda topbox or some other brand - your post doesn't really specify.
I ask because each brand has a different mount.

This is the one, no details about mounting, when I asked the question the seller said I'd just need a rack of sorts.. Perhaps I'll just get it and see what the go is.

Here's a mounting kit from a similar one, I'm guessing I'd still need a rack to mount the mounting kit to?

That's looks the same as my new Third Gear top case mounting plate which I secured to my OEM rack

I'm sure that if you could find longer bolts and maybe something for spacers you could mount on top of the grab rail. If you look at the grab rail under the top case you can see where the spacers are for the bolts that came with the OEM rack. Even my OEM rack came with a mounting plate.
