This is lining up to be an exciting and well planned NatRally.    It also may be about a 2kg weekend.  :eat   :grin

I might have to loose a few kg before the NatRally
Hardest thing is I can't do a lot other than my daily walks  ++

That is all BRILLIANT, John and Kate!
You two have gone waaay beyond expectation in preparing this and now are doing a fabulous job of promoting it.
I can't see any wavering members being able to resist cancelling everything and heading for Mackay.

BTW- those cattle grids are mostly on hairpin bends, so add a whole new dimension to butt pucker if you're leaning into the turn...    :eek
For the modern man who lives in the city, riding a bike might be one of the only ways to escape the humdrum monotony. To take off and ride. To be both at one with nature and one with the bike. To feel masculine. Adam Piggott

Rally Run-Up No. 3
Mackay on a Plate

Mackay can offer some great places to eat, from classic Australian man-sized steaks to ethnic cuisines, to fine dining. If you're staying longer than just the three days of the rally, why not try something a bit more interesting than basic pub fare or a takeaway pizza?

Here are some of our favourites:

The Austral Hotel: https://www.theaustralhotel.com.au/
Excellent steaks and pub fare

The Paddock & Brew Co: https://www.facebook.com/pg/thepaddockandbrewcompany
Always busy. American-style food and craft beers

The Railway Hotel, Marian: http://railwayhotelmarian.com.au/hotel
Very popular, for good reason. Outstanding food and generous portions. Out of town, but well worth the trip

Sorbello's*: http://www.sorbellos.com.au/
A large family-owned and run Italian restaurant. Warm, friendly service, excellent value and great Italian food, with lots of choice, including V & GF. They also offer a takeaway service.
*ST2UP & Pockey's Top Tip!

Bing's Nomiya: https://www.facebook.com/Bings-NOMIYA-Japanese-Cuisine-361539540720628
Busy and popular Japanese restaurant

Roshni*: http://www.roshni.com.au/index.html
Award-winning Indian restaurant, with authentic food and excellent service. V & GF options. They also offer a takeaway service.
*Scarlett Thunderbolt's Top Tip!

Hot Wok: http://www.hotwokchineserestaurant.com.au/
Large, popular Chinese restaurant. Quality, tasty food, generous portions, takeaway option.

Let's Do Greek: http://letsdogreek.com.au/
Family owned and operated Greek restaurant, a popular Saturday night destination.

Fusion 128: https://www.fusion128.com.au/
As the name suggests, interesting fusion cuisine without being too fancy. V & GF options

BURP: http://burpeatdrink.nefood.com.au/
Modern Australian, locally sourced produce and an imaginative menu.

Latitude 21: http://www.mackayaccommodation.com.au/mackay-restaurant
Elegant, upmarket surroundings and a menu to match

Galleons: https://oceaninternational.com.au/galleons-restaurant-mackay
Scarlett Thunderbolt's own 'special occasion' destination. A gorgeous waterfall/poolside setting, a great menu and meticulous service.

Church on Palmer: http://www.thechurchrestaurant.com.au/
A unique dining experience, the restaurant is located in a former church and still features the original stone floor and stained glass windows. An elegant but not pretentious menu.

We hope this selection will have fired up your tastebuds.  Bon Appetit!

Cheers

OK Guys, time to update that roll call.
PS - Extremely impressed, yes I'll say that again EXTREMELY IMPRESSED with John and Kate's promotion and hard work with this years venue. Can't wait!!
I acknowledge hardworking Australians no matter who they are or where they come from. All those who have contributed to this wonderful country deserve an equal share of gratitude for their contributions. To single any group of individuals out for special homage only denigrates the rest of us.

Rally Run-Up No. 4
Beyond NR2018

Things to do and places to see around Mackay if you're staying longer than the Rally or if you're not a rider. We're offering a wide range to cater for all tastes and energy levels!

For adrenaline junkies:

Kite Surfing  • Wakeboarding  • Zipline Flying  • Barrier Reef Historic Shipwreck Diving  • Rainforest Scuba Diving  • Paddleboarding  • Sailing

...Or something a bit gentler:

The Bluewater Trail  • Bluewater Lagoon  • Swimming Pools  • Beaches  • Botanic Gardens  • Marina and Breakwater  • Freckle Farm Paddock to Plate tour  • Mackay Artspace

Take to the skies:

Tiger Moth Joy Flights  • Scenic Flights  (YouTube video from the Queensland Weekender program)

Uniquely Mackay:

Sarina Sugar Shed  • Broken River Platypus viewing  • Finch Hatton Gorge  • Hay Point Coal Terminal Lookout  • Orchid Display House  • That Sapphire Place   and of course,  • kangaroos on Cape Hillsborough beach at dawn

Café Society:

If you need a break from all that hurtling around the countryside on two wheels, we've sorted out some of the area's best venues. Whether you're after a decent coffee with a view, a sumptuous high tea, or are just looking for a relaxed and friendly place to put away a premium pie and a beer, we've got options for you.

Botanic Gardens Café  • Kinchant Waters Bar & Restaurant  • The Garden Teahouse  • Country Charm Garden & Gifts  • Pinnacle Hotel

Shop till you drop:

Mackay isn't known as a shopping destination, but we have a reasonable assortment of retail opportunities for those who want to spend some quality time in the air-conditioning and out of bike gear!

Caneland Central  • Mount Pleasant Plaza  • Northern Beaches Central  • Parkside Plaza

Outside the shopping centres, we have a large variety of shops, restaurants, pubs and bars in the city centre. It can be a very pleasant way to pass the time in the evening, when you can stroll the illuminated city-centre streets, listen to the rosellas and lorikeets making a racket in the palm trees and inspect the menus you pass.

In addition, we have some great local markets which are well worth exploring if you're in the area at the right time.

Head for the hills:

In general, Mackay is on flat land at the foot of the range, perfectly suited to our chief crop of sugar cane. But we do have our local high spots, giving a fantastic view of the surrounding countryside, the sea and out to the closest islands of the Great Barrier Reef.

Here's an assortment you might like to visit to get an eagle's-eye view of our lovely city and country-scape:

Mt Oscar Rotary Lookout  • Lambert's Lookout  • Albatross Street Lookout   (and of course, Eungella and Eimeo)

Cheers
John & Kate

Rally Run-Up No. 5
Gateway to Tropical North Queensland

If you're considering using Mackay as a jumping-off point to a holiday in FNQ while you're up here, we have some suggestions for things to see as you head north. Even if you only have a few days, you could be in Townsville in half a day, or Cairns in one day.

Think about it...

  Hobart in August             14° / 6°
  Melbourne in August        15° / 8°
  Adelaide in August           16° / 9°
  Brisbane in August          22° / 11°
  Mackay in August            23° / 14°
  Townsville in August        25° / 16°
  Cairns in August              27° / 17°

Where would you rather be?

Here's some ideas for places to visit, starting with those close at hand and ending with Cairns.

Mackay to Townsville

 Townsville area

There's a lot to see and do in Townsville, so here's a small selection of our favourites spots:

The Strand  • Castle Hill  • Mt Stuart

 Townsville to Cairns

Hinchinbrook lookout  • Cardwell (don't forget to try the fish & chips and mud crab sandwiches)  • Paronella Park, and
Walsh's Pyramid

Finally, in Cairns our top tips are:

• A day trip out to the Reef with a spot of snorkelling or scuba diving,

• The Kuranda Railway and Skyrail,

• Hot air ballooning on the Atherton Tableland,

• Mossman Gorge, • the Rex Highway to Port Douglas, • the Gillies range, • Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Centre and • the Australian Armour & Artillery Museum.

There's heaps more to be done along the way, but it'd take several visits to do everything, so we've picked out our favourites for this post. Best of all, for scenic ride and wiggly-road enthusiasts, our part of the world has some really wonderful riding country amongst all the other attractions, especially around Townsville and the high country above Cairns.
We look forward to welcoming you to the North :hatwave

Cheers

Any idea if the proposed fishing trip is still on the radar ?

Sorry CK, haven't a clue about this one; the fishing charter was something ST2UP was looking after. BTW, we're working on the NR2018 nametags - can you let us have your first name? Send a PM if you'd prefer to reply that way. Otherwise, you could end up with Secret Squirrel...  :grin
