Title: Aussie Geographic Milestones
Post by: StinkyPete on December 09, 2016, 11:22:27 AM
So far as I can figure out, during my travels I have been to the most northern, southern, eastern, western and highest points in Australia, that it is possible to ride to without leaving sealed roads.

Northern - Lee Point, just out of Darwin
Southern Mainland - Wilsons Prom
Southern Tassie - Southport
Eastern - Byron Bay Lighthouse (on my XJR1300)
Western - A spot on the road just north of Denham
Highest - Charlotte Pass
South West Corner - Cape Leeuwin

I've added "Head of the Bight", and Cabramurrra  (Australia's highest town)  which are probably other notable geographic milestones, and have been to Kulgera NT, which is as close to the Centre of Australia that sealed roads will take you.   Unfortunately I didn't get a photo, so I must return one day.

Well done, StinkyPete. You've got an excellent collection there.
I imagine you've been to the "centre" of the country as well.  :like

Now to define the Centre.

The centre is a bit hard to define.   See  http://confluence.org/confluence.php?visitid=10560 (http://confluence.org/confluence.php?visitid=10560)
However I have ridden up the guts several times, and suspect I have  been close to the centre, wherever that might be.

Thanks, Pete. Good to see the pics. I had a collection of photos similar to this, but after many years of traveling, change of partner, lifestyles and home locations, somewhere along the way the albums have been misplaced and all I have left now is the memories.  :thumb

Here's some more info on what is the Centre of Australia, and the Centre of the various States.   The "johnston Geodic Centre " appears close the the highway and might be an interesting Geographic Milestone to capture with the ST.   ++

Good effort Pete, I might meed to add that challenge to my to do list.

Ah!  Southport, what a lovely spot.

Now, just add unsealed roads to the next challenge.

Back in 2014, our destination was Cockle Creek.  We under estimated travel times, by the time we got to Ida Bay, we realised that Cockle Creek was out of the question, so this as far south as we got before U-turning (very, very slowly on the gravel), and headed back to Bruny Island (where we were staying), but it was getting dark by the time we reached the camp ground.

It's on the to do list for November 2019.

I also plan to do Bruny Island but intend to find accommodation on the mainland (cough cough the Tasmanian mainland).

Well done Pete,
Google says the lowest point in Australia is Lake Eyr sea bed, 15 m below sea level.
I wonder where the lowest piece of sealed road is?

I think Bruny Island is a two nighter, there's too much to see on a ride to, one night stop-over and ride from - you could waste a couple of hours waiting in the ferry queue, if it's busy and you are unlucky.

Stayed there twice, once in a caravan park cabin - not too expensive, the second time we camped - unpowered site was cheap.

Tasmania / Expensive???  I have two theories on that subject.

1.  Tasmania is an indigenous word for Expensive, or

2.  The TAS TAFE (or equivalent) has a course on How to Charge Tourists, and EVERY tour operator, accommodation host, etc.. has done the course and passed with flying colours.

Good point Glen.  Sea level at low tide will be too easy, but I wonder if there is an area that is below sea level.  I will do some research.    :think1

Thanks Gadget.   The only place in Oz that I can find which is below sea level is around Lake Eyre, and there's not a lot of sealed roads in the vicinity.

Pete,

Riding back from the Meningie RTE I went via Narrung and was quite surprised at the elevations I was getting on the GPS, although because of the wind, I didn't spend too much time looking at the screen.

I'm sure that there were a couple of points that were below sea level, a reason for the barrages? The second link gives a height above sea level of -8 metres, so the low point may not be that far of a ride away  :beer

The first link says "The nearest village to Narrung is Milang" which may be correct as the crow flies, but unless you have a boat I'd say Meningie is a lot closer.

South - Tidal River earlier today.

East - Byron Bay I did in 2017.
South (mainland) - Tidal River 2019
South (other) - I rode to Bruny Lighthouse this morning which just pips Southport for most south.

But what about Cockle Creek (green marker), about 30km south of Southport?  Pips Bruny Lighthouse (blue marker) by a far bit.

It's been on my wish list since 2014, but have managed to miss twice since, and probably won't get there this year either.
