Introducing Myself
« on: November 04, 2012, 04:43:39 AM »
 Hi,
My name is Lachlan and I live at Beecroft in NSW. I run my own business as a Locksmith and have recently purchased a second hand ST1100 police version. I pick it up today Sunday 4/11/12. Not knowing a lot about these bikes other than its touring rep I started to research them and ended up discovering this site. I like riding but  don't have a lot of contacts with fellow bike enthusiasts my age group, 55. If you are keen for a weekend spin e-mail me.

Regards

Yep, them krazies are a worry, but you'll be safe if you're careful.

Hi Deisel,

Thanks for the message. Yes I am getting the miles up and am having a great time on the ST1100. It is as much fun as I had as a kid when I first started riding. I met quite a few of the guys and girls on the grey gum ride and they are a great bunch. I am looking forward to many more rides. If anyone local to Beecroft is interested in night or weekend rides just give me a call on 0418967776. I am always up for a ride. I am a qualified locksmith so if any of the members need padlocks or the like let me know and I will supply parts at cost.

Kind regards

Hi sorry for the delay in getting back to you. Been flat out like a lizard drinkin. It is a 2002 model and it absolutely flies. It is hard to resist giving her a squirt every now and then. The overall condition is pretty good although it has a few Ks up. It now lives in the basement with the other toys from my childhood. Will probably go for a spin out to Windsor this Saturday for lunch.

If you feel like sharing a ride (and sometimes a lone ride is what you are after) just post up in the NSW/ACT area that you are going somewhere, the time and if anyone else might like to join in. Sometimes others will go, other times not.  No big deal for a casual ride.

Enjoy the last of the ST1100s  :wht11 (I have the 96 police model myself, only 179,000kms)

Hi all,

Bad news I am afraid. Yesterday I rolled the ST1100 P out and started her up to warm up the movey bits whilst I locked the garage and to my dismay when I approached to get on I noticed a pool of green liquid underneath her. Oh dear. I had only had her serviced and tuned at Castle hill Motorcycles a couple weeks ago if that. Talk about surprised. I shut her down and started to trace where the fluid was coming from. I have taken the lower shroud off and the upper tank cover but still can't see where the fluid is originating from. It appears to be running from high up down the front of the motor from what I can see so far. The bike has around 130000Ks up. I don't know where the drain plug is located for the coolant as this was supposed to have been replaced during service and I wanted to check to make sure the apprentice had tightened it up. Any ideas or suggestions would be more than welcome at this stage as I don't know whether to continue removing the fairings and investigate further or just put it back together and take it to a Honda dealer. I have worked on all my own bikes and know my way around a spanner but do not know the layout of the ST.

There is a drain on left side of radiator. Possible locations for leaks are around the thermostat housing at top right of engine under the tool box, under the carbs, or worst case the water pump itself. All the side fairings have to come off to check any of these.

Mine did a similar thing. The coolant drain plug is on the lower left of the radiator (when on the bike).  Worth asking what the shop actually did, as there is a coolant drain bolt on the engine block that supposedly you should undo, but it is a pain to get to.

It might be just bad luck, as one of the hoses under the carbs may have leaked (sometimes just doing up the clamps fixes it), or like mine one of the alloy elbows under the carbs has cracked.  During a standard coolant change none of the hoses or elbows under the carbs would have been looked at.  At 130,000kms it would be best to replace the hoses under the carbs and the allow elbows. The smaller bypass hose on mine had become really brittle, and would have failed sometime.  Carb removal is not that hard, but may be daunting depending on your level of confidence.

One think to check is the radiator cap (top right of the radiator under the right side pocket) as I have had a perished radiator cap seal, and the overflow hose that goes to the coolant overflow bottle is well known to crack and leak.

And just to put things in perspective, I have had cars with far more coolant loss, thermostat hoses going etc problems than the ST11.

Thanks Stevo and Saaz,

I appreciate the information it has certainly boosted my confidence. I will remove the fairings and carbs and investigate and replace the suggested parts. I really love this bike and boy did I feel it when my ride went pear shaped. I got onto a web site with some schematics of parts for the ST's and they are also very helpfull. I will keep you posted and let you know if anything unusual crops up as I work through the problem.

Thanks guys

I should also have mentioned that the large hoses under the carbs can be replaced with heater hose. The smaller bypass hose can be replaced with high pressure EFI hose that is also rated for hot use (it seems to be blue).  The hoses that go onto the radiator are best bought from honda as it is hard to match the curves and size, but they need not be done yet (unless one is split of course!) as they will need to be removed when doing the timing belt at 155,000kms so may as well fit new hoses then as they have to be removed, and really do stick on.

Good luck.
