I was just wondering if there is an off the shelf / non genuine oil filter for the ST1300? On the FJR I was running a Z411 oil filter which I could buy at any spares outlet.

You can use the Ryco Oil Filter - Z436

Get it at any of the Repcos etc.

Also brought the same Z436 filter from Auto One $8.95.
It is a direct compatible on their data base to the Honda 15410-MM9-013.

If you use the Z436 as the start, there are repco and valvoline equivalents. I have used the ryco and valvoline ones for the last 130,000kms or so.

Hey guys, please please don't use non-genuine oil filters on your ST... you might be saving a few dollars, but in the long run it will cost you... especially on your ST... It just isn't worth it... I would never use one on my own bike, nor on any bike that I service...

Sorry, but in my opinion, recommending a non genuine filter is bad advice... Just because the oil filter fits, that doesn't make it compatible... I'm honestly shocked that some of you guys are using Ryco's....

Well if you want to save money, then you should be using genuine parts. So you will be saving maybe $5 ? If you are prepared I jeopardise the integrity of your motor, then go ahead... But a favourite sales pitch is 'they're made in the same factory', well they aren't.... One has a Honda stamp, and one has a Ryco stamp.... That's the difference...

Are you absolutely confident that the paper is equivalent to the Honda paper, or could it slowly starve your motor of lubricant ? Are you sure there are the correct amount of pleats internally ? Are you positive that the bypass valve is exactly the same pressure as the genuine Honda ? If you cannot answer yes to any of the above, then you don't know, and you should be using what you know does work...
I'm sure you've seen HiFlo filters around ? Why do you think they're called HiFlo ?
But seriously, I've been working spanners for many years, and would never recommend non genuine parts to any if my customers, ever....

Cost wise, I save a bucket with an after market filter. As do many hundreds of folk around the world. I have never heard of any damage to an engine due to this practice. In fact many OEM filters come out of the same factories that make the after market devices, the only difference being the paint job and the cost.

Ryco filters are speced for many high performance engines, so there shouldnt be a problem there. I dont use Honda oil either by the way, and after 100000Ks (that I have added) the motor is still fine.

The important thing is to do regular oil and filter changes.

I currently have a Honda oil filter and have used K&N. Will use Ryco now I know the number but there is an element of truth in what Assassin says.

We were recently evaluating filters at work for a statutory approval for a Diesel engine system and we did find when we examined exhaust filters from a few different suppliers that the construction (ie material and number of pleats) did vary quite a lot and in the case of particulate filters had a measurable effect on the performance.

I would be thinking that Ryco filters would be ok though, they are so popular if there was a noticeable difference some bright spark would have figured it out by now.

Ryco and Repco wouldnt make and recommend filters if they werent up to the task, the damages claims would clean them out these days.

Many years ago, I read of a person who used OEM filters on his Volvo, until one day he noticed some lettering under the Volvo blue and white filter. He stripped the paint off, to fins that underneath was a Ryco label. He found out that Ryco supplied Volvo, and he was paying much extra for a layer of paint.

.Ryco filter about $10, and a genuine (last time I bought one) around $50. A big difference

Repco ROF135 is about $7.50

That's not true Brock, a genuine is just over $20, I just bought one this week for my ST, so who ever you have been buying yours from has been over charging you by double....

I will check my receipt tomorrow and let you know the exact price....

I'm not exactly sure what the cost was, as it was 4.5 years ago, it was expensive from the local Honda dealer, and significant cheaper at Repco. Never bought genuine again.

Well, for what it's worth, I'd pay the extra ten bucks for a genuine filter... peace of mind...

Check out oil filter comparisons on YouTube... You will be surprised....

Obviously it's up to you guys to use what ever filters you like, but I always educate my friends and customers to use the genuine type....

I must admit I use both Honda and Ryco, just depends on where I am at the time but generally speaking the Honda one is twice the price. I tend to change filter and oil at the 10,000 klms mark. Generally use synthetic oil, not sure whether it is better or not but when I drain it, it certainly still looks fairly clean . . .
