1990 st1100 frame number 2

Hi guys and gals, just new here and wanted to introduce myself I am in New Zealand and have just bought 1990 st1100 frame number JH2S26U XLM000002. Apparently it has historical significance as far as st in oz goes. It started there and went to the Netherlands then ended up here. Only 2 owners and in really good condition for age with 144k kms. Would really like to know history about frame number if anyone can shed light, did the numbers start for each country or from each factory or worldwide....cheers Craig  form kiwi land.

Hi Craig from chilly (at the moment) Peterborough in South Aussie.

Your bike would have been the first one available in Australia for sale. The info tab on this page gives the VIN range for the Australian 1990 model  https://www.cmsnl.com/honda-st1100-1990-l-australiakph_model4721/#.XRlWoeszaUk

There was a number one but that was for Honda Australia to get compliance with our ADRs.

Welcome to OZSTOC.   It would seem only right that having been around the world, you and #2 come across to live in Oz.  We'll swap you for 10 Kiwis we already have here.   :rofl
For the modern man who lives in the city, riding a bike might be one of the only ways to escape the humdrum monotony. To take off and ride. To be both at one with nature and one with the bike. To feel masculine. Adam Piggott

Thanks guys, sorry to steal your first st, but st least you know where it is.
The vin plate actually says its manufacture date is 1/90. I'll get a picture up soon. What I cant establish is how early it is in global terms. They were only in Europe and Australia at that stage.

Now that I have the bike in my possession, I have come up with some interesting finds. It still has the original tool bag and owners manual, which is cool. And the history is a little clearer. It was in fact vinned in Australia  in March of 1990, actual manufacture month was December 1989, it was then first registered in NZ in May of 1990. It never went to the Netherlands as previously stated. Public sales did not start till june 1990. Which leads me to believe it was either a press bike for marketing or a market assessment bike. I have tracked down some old magazines from that era and am awaiting their delivery, on the cover shows a.silver st, is it mine I wonder. So the research continues.

Cheers all.

In Australia the compliance plate usually has the month/year of manufacture on it and yours has ? /90 so made in 1990 but I can't read the month. The 10th character of the VIN is the year of manufacture but in most other countries it means the model year.

This is from our 99 1100A

What appears to be missing from yours is the approval number should would be the same on all of them unless NZ doesn't need it.

Yes I noticed that to. That would suggest that it was not yet approved for market. Which could mean it was an assessment bike.
I would like to get it side by side with a later bike for that year and play spot the difference to see if they made changes before selling to public.

Well, now managed to spend some quality time with the st.
It needed a thorough clean and it revealed some cool stuff. All the plastic is original, and date stamped 01/90, apart from the airbox cover which is dated 12/89. Everything on the bike is original, including the 28amp alternator and swing arm and engine. Also had time to look up the ownership history and guess what, it never was in Australia. It was part of the 155 "launch" bikes in 1990 allocated to australasia. Ie Australia and New Zealand. It was sold new right here in Dunedin NZ at McIvor and Veitch Honda. I am going there this week to see if they remember the bike and how they came to get it.
It may not be the first sold or the first registered, but it most definitely is the first off the production line for Australasia. Also a very early, and completely original going bike in world terms.

Will update more as it comes to hand.

Cheers
