Final drive failure
« on: November 03, 2013, 09:28:06 PM »
Hello,

Somewhat of a "d'oh" moment. My final drive failed! I'm still waiting for final details from the mechanic but it all appears my final drive has failed. Stopped on a long ride and pointed at a road sign to a mate. Let the clutch out to take off and did not move much but had horrible grinding noises and iron filings come out of the final drive.

Wondering if this is common?

Bike has done approx. 130 000km. Strangely enough final drive and rear wheel replaced approx 50 000km ago as they were on their way out. Mechanic told me that they do wear and when replaced (yes, I cannot figure out this bit,) never need replacing for a 2nd time.

Mine has made them think again.

Something really does not make sense here.

Cheers!

Definitely not common, yours is the first I have heard of. My bike is coming up to 120000Ks, and there have been no problems.

Not at all common, in fact pretty well unheard of.  Is it the final drive (the part with the oil in it) or the drive splines, which is the part where the rear wheel connects to the final drive?  The splines are known to wear if not properly greased every tyre change and if the final drive is not properly aligned, causing abnormal wear.  The rear wheel rubbers and alloy inserts do need replacing when they wear (I did mine at about 140,000kms or so) or else the rear wheel gets excessive wear and may need to be replaced.  I have 212,000kms or so on mine.

Hi Brock and Saaz,

Thanks for that, good point Saaz, the spline between the final drive and the wheel, hence the iron filings coming out.

Brock, you may have some bad news coming your way. In about 10 000km anyway.

I'll keep you posted as I find out.

I did my cush rubbers at 120000 and good grease on splines. It sounds like Moly hasnt been used in the past and the splines have given up the ghost. STray had the same worn drive and replaced the Drive hub I think. Not a bad price for new one David Silver spares UK.

New final drive unit for $US1,226.57 plus $US 85.99 shipping at

http://www.partzilla.com/parts/detail/honda/HP-41300-MY3-780.html

or you can select the parts you need and repair the one you have.
http://www.partzilla.com/parts/search/Honda/Motorcycle/1999/ST1100A+AC/FINAL+DRIVEN+GEAR+%282%29/parts.html

David Silver Spares shows the new drive unit as discontinued but the gear set item 6 (41310-MT3-305) is still available.

Drive Spider or Flange Set at http://www.partzilla.com/parts/detail/honda/HP-42630-MT8-305.html for $US153.51

So a few options depending on finances and whether you can do the work your self or not.

The Guys of tyres for bikes did the spline greasing and dint mention any wear, nor did Honda. One of these days I will pull the wheel off and have a look. If the wheel has been properly serviced, at tyre changes, problems should be minimal.

Pulled the rear wheel on the project '96 in the shed over the weekend, 188000kms and the splines are perfect, no wear or other damage. I guess the Police serviced it regularly and the subsequent owners have had it checked regularly.

When I purchased mine with 65k on the clock, I was given a new rear wheel, what a bonus, when I removed the wheel for tyre replacement the old unit was well worn and rubbers virtually non existant.
I now will check/replace the rubbers every tyre change and will not rely on shops to do it.
