Title: Big Ted in Tassie
Post by: Diesel on November 05, 2017, 02:00:13 PM
Alright Taswegians... Big Ted is currently doing his lap of Tassie and would probably welcome a quick G'day coffee or lunch or other from his OzSTOC buddies.

I am meeting him again to ride/camp the West Coast, and would welcome here in the commentrs any recommendations of local knowledge for great things to see, great cafes and coffee stops, bitumen lookouts or any other tourist traps that you KNOW he should experience whilst here.

Here is a live link to his current position so you can plan a meet up or just stalk him...

PM Big Ted to make plans and share the love about great places to experience. (and CC me in too please).

There's your excuse for a ride!    ;-*

Bitumen lookouts?  You'll be lucky to find a bitumen road down the west coast.

Last Tassie ride was in 2014 the sealed road terminated 10km to 15km south of Arthur River, where there's Coutta Rocks, a short ride over a sandy gravel tack will get you this:
(http://i643.photobucket.com/albums/uu159/williamson_photos/Tassie%20Tour%20March%202014/CoutaRocks_zps86bb0a54.jpg) (http://s643.photobucket.com/user/williamson_photos/media/Tassie%20Tour%20March%202014/CoutaRocks_zps86bb0a54.jpg.html)

We then had to U-turn because the gravel road down to Corinna was wash out, had to double back to Smithton (nice little bakery and local pies) and Stanley (scallop pies a specialty at the bakery).

Just south of the Arthur River bridge there's a road (500m of good gravel) to the End of the World lookout, worth the effort.

Back Road into to Stanley is also worth the effort.

The ride down the valley to Gunns Plains and then ride up the hill on the otherside was worth it too:

To get further down the west coast, we had to go to Wynyard and down the Murchison Highway.  The Waratah pub had a good meal and view:

The view from the road out of Queenstown:

Strathgordon Dam:

Hiya, the next 3 days are planted out...
I'll be at Port Arthur tomorrow, then in Hobart for 2 days catching up with an old friend... and getting my bum off the bike!
Cheers, Rob.

Another crap day in crappy Tasmania, riding crappy roads, in crappy weather, climbing crappy mountains. When will this nightmare end!?!?!?!
I'm here in Cradle Mountain for another magic day I suspect, then hit the northwest corner tomorrow.  The Apple Isle has well & truly exceeded my expectations.

It sure was a great day for a ride. I am taking Big Ted out through Palooona Dam, Gunns Plains and Riana to send him off at Devonport tonight.

..... Gunns Plains .....

Any mention of Gunns Plains triggers a reaction from me to post this pic (even though it was posted a few posts back):

I'd like to see something similar taken in the Spring, I imagine the green colours would be magnificent.

Great shot! You are right. .. green on green with green embellishments right now. Apparently it is my duty to back this up with a pic. Will sort shortly.

Damnit - there was no reception out there for me to check your pic - otherwise I would have tried a similar pan shot. The light green areas on my pic are where the first cut of hay has already taken place for silage.
