2018 Rally
« on: June 18, 2017, 06:12:28 PM »
The timing and location of the 2018 rally was raised at the WA RTE today.
OK I know that tradition has been for the date and location of the next rally to be announced at the previous rally dinner.
For a lot of people who need to apply for holidays upto 12 months in advance and those of us who want to pick up cheap airfares to cross the continent early the release of the date and location is important.
If the 2018 rally is to revert to early in the year some thought needs to be given to announcing the general location and date now.

We have to our our requests in for annual leave for the following financial year in january.  Not knowing about these national rallies until after Balranald and having nothing else planned meant I didn't request specific dates and ended up with november, missing the national rally by a week.  I do plan to attend one in future though.  If it does revert to early in the year I'll be forced to look at 2019.

Ideally it should be held the same time each year in either Autumn or Spring which avoids the northern cyclone season and the southern winter season.

Thanks STimpy,
I had obviously missed that post.
Dates now in my planner.
Using Townsville as a NQLD mid point, Perth to Townsville return well over 10,000kms. That will need some thought/planning.
That is the weekend after the Border Run, interesting.

I guess if you leave border village sunday morning doing 5 x 800km ish days to hit townsville thursday night (assuming it's that far north).
At least it will get warmer the further north you go  :H

That is some of my thinking, looking at Google maps now. Just need it to be close to a MAJOR Airport so Theresa can fly in and out.
From memory, and StinkyPete (Or his replacement as National Rally Coordinator) can probably confirm, that one of the items on the check list for National Rally's, is a nearby airport for fly-ins.

It is indeed  :like

And my near by we mean within a sensible drive/ride distance or with public transport options to the Rally location...and NOT $100+ taxi fares  :Whipped

Does the nearest city airport have a NRL & QRL team or just a QRL team ?

After the current rally calendar has expired, I would like to see the Nat Rally aligned with the Ulysses AGM, either the weekend before or the weekend after, and in the same region.

For me, there would be obvious advantages with such an alignment, eg. one set of holiday leave (although with retirement coming closer and closer, that will not be an issue for me in 2020 and beyond), less travel expenses and easier planning.

I'm sure as many of the current OzSTOCers age, and as the OzSTOC age profile comes closer to the Ulysses profile, this would suit more and more OzSTOCers.

Food for thought .....

It would end up being unfeasible for many reasons even tho it may suit some to combine them.

1) From my experience of attending Ulysses AGM's the accommodation is usually booked out for a month either side of an Ulysses AGM as people use their holidays or retirement to make it an annual pilgrimage and have an extended stay for one or two weeks either side of the AGM.
2) Accommodation providers tend to up their rates for the AGM knowing how many people attend.
3) Ulysses AGM's are usually at larger towns or cities as they need a large support industry to make them work, and not the small rural centres that OzSToc like to support.
4) The accident rate for attendees going to and from an Ulysses AGM is elevated ( same this year ) so I would tend stay clear of riding in large groups.
Cheers
