Title: Motorcycle Boots.....What do you wear?
Post by: Streak on January 01, 2013, 04:46:43 PM
Well my DriRider Boots have finally given up the ghost, and i have been thinking what to buy next.

So i have stepped out and bought a Set of Mongrel Zip Siders in a black Leather, they are a 150mm High Zip Sided Full Lace up Steel Capped boot with full ankle protection, and they are Australian Made for something different!

I think they will be great as they are comfortable, light weight, going to still provide protection to my ankles, and i will be able to walk around in them after a day on the bike, Cost is around the $150 to $160 mark

I have also gotten onto some fantastic socks made by a company called FXD, they come up the leg high enough so they don't fall down into your boot, and being 100% cotton they are really comfortable without being bulky...They come in a 5 pack for about $19.95

Which got me thinking? what do you Wear? whats your experience?

I've got a set of Falco motorcycle boots. I had a crash in July 2011 and smashed my left angle while wearing Fiefighter Boots. Taipans. I'll always wear the Falcos now.

I wear my old Rossi motocross boots that I used to ride with in late '70s and '80s. They are all leather and come up quite high on my leg, but I have them and they are still good and no chance of me ever riding MX again (or short track). They are a pain to do up all the buckles, they still fit and reasonably waterproof so thats what I wear.

My boots came from Wicked Gear ( a local business ) They are comfortable and wear pretty well. I,m not a fan of steel caps on a bike, for one they dont fit me properly, and the steel cap prevents feel of the shift lever and is hard to get under  the lever as well.

I wear the mongrels in the swede version 5 days a week as it is due to the nature of my work, i wear them al lthe time on the bike, due to the wider, slightly flatter nature of the boots, it actually feels the same as my dri riders, hence why i am giving them a go, but i did have the problem with some older lace up Steel Blues that i used to wear, i think most of it comes down to fit and feel :)

For the past 3+ years I've been wearing some BMW Motorad boots.  I primarily bought them for safety, (shin, ankle guards etc) and waterproof and warmth.

They were comfortable when I first put them on.  I regularly wore them on the ride to work and because they were so comfortable I would often forget to change into my Safety boots.

They cost around $300 when I bought them, but since then I've found out they are manufactured for BMW by an Italian company (I think it is TCX), so I've been looking at their range when it comes time to replace these.

possible replacements are these: http://www.tcxboots.com/eng/prodotti-dettaglio.php?prodotto=13 (http://www.tcxboots.com/eng/prodotti-dettaglio.php?prodotto=13)

Here is the Revzilla review of them:  TCX X-Five Plus Gore-Tex Boots Review at RevZilla.com (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-HRYJ-bxTPo#ws)

I got givved a pair of Sidi boots similar to Tipsy's.
(do you reckon he was one of the original white shoe brigade famous in Qld some years ago?)
Boots are magic, protection in all the right places and some of it is adjustable for tightness.
Biggest drawback is having to take a file to the soles. Slippery as.
Almost dropped the trundler three times at consecutive traffic lights as the right boot decided to slide when it hit the deck.
big bonus is the airvents and cool feet.

RJays Tour AM (http://www.rjays.com.au/home/products/boots-touram-boots.html) - I bought them for around $150 when I bought the bike. I was quite worried about the quality (being RJays), but I have to say, I'm impressed. 24,000km later in 18 months and they're still in good nick - no splitting, all rubber still glued to leather, etc., etc. I would buy them again without any hestitation.

These are more for winter though. Never had a leak through 2 winter seasons, and nice an toasty - which is the problem in summer.

I used to wear Army GPs, so I'm likely to grab some for the rally next year.

During the week I wear Johny Reb Short Boots, they polish up alright and I don't get complaints from the boss about my foot wear, for longer rides I wear Dri Rider boots (alpine I think), they are warm and so far water proof, also very comfortable.

Alpine Stars - Alpha Touring Waterproof (cough). Extremely comfortable, however does get a little hot.

Socks I wear either my work black cotton polyester socks or cotton sports socks. I do have some kevlar riding socks but have only worn then roller skating.

Streak I was warned off steel capped boots by the safety staff at the bike shops as they may be worse for safety than helpful.
Expressing my concerns, but they do look great.

Some older Dririders. Still water resistant and comfortable, but the soles are getting a bit thin and the left hand reinforcing for the gear change is worn down so I am starting to feel the gear lever.  Looking for something else so am taking notes...

I'm a Gaerne wearer. I've had them for about 7 years. They are a long boot and very light and very comfy. I reckon I'm just about due for a new pair. I would get the Gaerne again but, as with all my riding gear these days, I'm looking for cooler gear so will probably go a shorter boot this time around. I personally don't like laces as I got the laces caught on the gear lever once and almost found myself on the ground while endeavouring to get the foot free. Not while on the ST thank goodness.
Cheers.

I have been wearing a pair of Rossi 811 Motorbike boots that I purchased at the Ulysses AGM in Townsville a few years ago
They are very comfortable and are Australian made.
I wear a pair of Oliver lace up boots on hot local rides but I  really don't like wearing lace up boots on the bike
as the laces could get cought on brake or gear lever but the were free. "Work changed style"

I bought a pair of Forma Poker touring boots from the motorcycle-boot-store on Ebay.
Customer service was terrific and advice re sizes was spot-on and if the size was an issue they advised they would send out the correct size before I had returned the originals (I was leaving for Ulysses AGM 2 days after I received the boots).
Sizing was correct and they are the most comfy shoes I have.
I actually purchased the mystery boot ($99, site specific) after speaking to the seller and received boots worth twice as much.

Chris,

I wear TCX S-Zero boots (http://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/tcx-s-zero-boots) [discontinued  :-[ ] (Makers of BMW Motorad boots).  They are Comfortable as soon as you put them on.  So comfortable that I would wear then to work and forget to change into my Safety boots, walk around work all day and ride home again.

They have very good shin, ankle and little toe protection and are definitely waterproof.  They all so keep my feet warm all year round (I have poor circulation in the feet, so it's important).

On the expensive side, but you get what you pay for.  I'll definitely be having another pair of TCX.  :grin

Here is a link to the TCX Boots (http://www.revzilla.com/tcx-boots) Range at Revzilla where you can see reviews of the individual boots.

So in the market, I like long boots.....with ankle and shin protection with a GP type sole you can walk in when off the bike....they are worn some days for over 12 hours and need to as waterproof as possible, I have cold feet so vents etc not needed  :whistle

Forma and Rossi are leading the charge at the moment, any other contenders I should consider ?

 :beer

Had the replacement booties for awhile now and in luuuurve with their comfort and waterproofing  :like

Went with BMW Motorrad Gortex touring boot  :thumbsup I think they are ultimately made by TCX in Italy and rebadged by that Bavarian mob  :thumb

I wear Rossi boots...zip sided with a velcro weatherproof flap... these ones are a couple of years old, now... and still covered in bugs from my last evening ride. Will give them a clean and polish later today, they are still damp from this mornings venture outside.

There we go... a bit more presentable.... by the way, those non-scratch pot scourers are great for removing bugs, prior to aqua proofing with Dubbin...

I extend the life of my boots with Selleys' Spred Sole.

It's not cheap at $14.20, but you get enough for a lot of applications.
The rear edge of the heels is the first thing to go in my boots, so that gets the treatment.

3 pairs of Rossi boots in this house all fell apart within 5 years of purchase, comfortable boots but not happy with the quality. All three pairs had the polyurethane in sole disintegrate completely. I now have Forma boots which are very comfortable and waterproof.

Have posted these before. These boots are 30yrs old. Hand me downs from my brother who bought a new pair and I didn't have a 'proper' pair of bike boots. they have had 5 new soles and 6 heels fitted and are still doing the job well. did come off with them on in my early days of riding and had the left boot trapped between the gear lever and the road. The boot tore open along the side seam and I only suffered heavy bruising. got them stiched up and good as new. Had them so long they have to same status as the family dog and they don't eat my socks.

Funny you should mention effects in the tropics..we had a stock of boots at work that had sat for some time and when we opened the boxes the polyurethane soles had dteriorated badly and the uppers wers perfect. It's not an uncommon thing, the missus had a pair of expensive hiking boots do the same thing because they hadn't been worn for a while. The Rossi boots however just disintegrated despite being used regularly. As forgetting them resoled it's a bit hard when you are on a ride 1500kms from home and they fall apart, easier just to buy a new pair of boots.

I chose Mongrel SP-N series with the Zip-sider.
I like the Zip-Sider for getting them on & off.
I also don't like steel caps so this N series means No steel caps.
Grip when the foot goes down is good.

I have been wearing  Rossi 811 boots for a number of hears. Australian made,  comfortable, waterproof. Recently sent them back to Rossi and had them resoled for less than half the price of a new pair.
Also have some Johnny Reb original high boots, only use them for short local rides as I really don't think they woukd provide much protection.
Wear Mongrel workboots for working in wouldn't wear for riding.

I bought some Dainese touring boots in early 2014. While they are comfortable once worn in, they just are not waterproof. As bad as my worn out Dryrider boots. Anything more than constant showers and they fill up with water. So they really got wet in recent months. A pity as they still look ok, soles not worn.

I now have some Gaerne G-Altus Aquatech boots like these http://www.fc-moto.de/Gaerne-Altus-Aquatech-Touring-Boot?gclid=CJbB0-O998UCFVcTvQodmRsAcw (http://www.fc-moto.de/Gaerne-Altus-Aquatech-Touring-Boot?gclid=CJbB0-O998UCFVcTvQodmRsAcw) bought locally. While a bit more expensive ($300) they have nice build quality and neat touches like a velcro tab on the zips to help close the zip and locate the tab properly.

Now have to wear them in.

Got them from Five Star Yamaha in Hamilton Hill WA back in 2011 at the shops end of financial year sale.

Last pair in the shop and just happened to be my size   :grin

Only $199 at the time, comfortable for riding, great protection, all the screw on bits and pieces are replaceable and they're still in perfect condition.      :thumbsup

I had considered wearing my Leather 8" Hi-Tech work boots on very short low speed rides in the past......you know just down the street to grab something etc .  Well not anymore :whistle

Most of you know what I do for work......Had a young man come off his LAMS approved bike today, bike only had 150k's on the clock....The incident was a result of rider inexperience....He was travelling at less than 25kph after pulling out from a roadside muddy driveway.....

He had spent the money on reasonable quality riding gear......all except his boots, he decided to used his 3/4 length, steel caped lace up work boots that were a combination of leather and mesh.....and made by a quality manufacturer  ;-*

I won't be posting the pics I took of his lower leg/ankle injury for the trauma team......but the injury earned him a ride in a Helicopter a date with an Orthopod and a Vascular surgeon.....and a protracted recovery.

Its my full length armoured boots for me now EVERYWHERE !!

I have never been a fan of steel toe caps, as you cant feel the gear lever with your toes, and can be a bit difficult getting the toecap under the lever.

P.S.

I need to find a decent riding boot with good long wearing proper soles, that my short broad foot with high instep can get into with out being too long in the toe.

...... steel caped lace up work boots ....

Steel Cap Boots - back in my rider training days with RTA / VicRoads there was an anecdotal story about a heavy truck running over a rider's steel cap boot crushing and severing his toes.

Laces - with laces, you risk loose loops getting caught around the gear and / or brake lever, or foot peg, and then having difficulty putting a foot to the ground when coming to a stop, and then an ungraceful fall to the ground - I know!  Of course, you should tuck the loose ends securely between boot and sock, and hope they don't work their way loose.

I wear Alpinestars touring boots, but it's hard to identify the particular model as they've changed the style a bit since I bought them.   They fitted me like a pair of old slippers from the day I bought them, have remained totally waterprooof in dreadful conditions.  They have long wearing soles and I hardly need to carry extra shoes with me because they are so comfortable, so I walk everywhere with them when touring.   The local bootmaker told me that he can get replacement soles from Alpinestars if I ever manage to wear them out.

I alternate with Dubbin and Bootpolish for care of the leather.

I witnessed the 'laces looped over the gear lever' trick several years ago in Melbourne at a major intersection with a biker wearing colours (I wont mention the club, outlaws anyway) as he pulled up at a set of lights, and became trapped under his Harley, much to the merriment of pedestrians crossing the road at the time. Not a single driver stepped from their cars to assist, as he had made an *ssole of himself with the traffic previously. Everybody just drove around him, and let him try to sort out the problem himself. Karma.

I thought the same when I first got them, but after a couple of days, became fine for riding and walking. Only problem I've had was that the velcro came away, but that was my fault. Some shoe glue, all fixed and happy.

I also have some Blundstone riding boots, great while riding, but walking not so good.

I'd always been a fan of the Dririder Storm Boot as they were extremely comfortable and waterproof.  They then "upgraded that with a 2.0 version but if you aske me the original storm boot was better.  Dririder quality has gone downhill in the last few years.  The last pants I bought tore and the back zip lost a tooth after very little use, and my last two pairs of storm 2.0 boots also have developed holes way too easily.

This morning I asked for recommendations on the AuStrøm facebook group's page and about ten people all responded with Forma Adventure boots.  A trip to AMX in Blair Athol ensued and after trying the highs and the lows walked out with a pair of lows and wore them for the ride home. Very comfortable although I did noticed what a couple of online reviews said about gear lever changes.  That said, I'll give them a proper 'running in' before whingeing about that.

I can vouch for the safety aspects after hitting an esky at highway speed with the left foot.   Cage driver going on holidays did not tie down his load and it landed in the middle of the highway.   I had blue plastic from the esky on the toe and side of the boot but no real damage

A while back (beginning of 2017) I brought SIDI Adventure Gore-Tex (version 2) boots.

They fit great, are easily adjusted and are comfortable :thumbsup

I picked them up from:

These too also got a mention on the V-strøm page.

I'm still using the Sidi boots and they are still working great :thumbsup

I have a pair of Alpinestar Roam Boots... ++

I actually picked them up on eBay secondhand for what I thought was a bargain price. They were in as new condition.
It was just sheer luck that they were the right size and I find them really comfortable!

Besides the price, I was attracted to them due to them being fastened with velcro straps.
I broke my right ankle and fibula some years back so have a bit of metalwork holding it all together so figured the adjustability of the straps would be better suited to my larger ankle, more so than a zip.

Pussies ........... here's some real man's boots.

(https://i643.photobucket.com/albums/uu159/williamson_photos/Forum%20Inserts/RMW%202_zpssnufwy19.jpg) (https://s643.photobucket.com/user/williamson_photos/media/Forum%20Inserts/RMW%202_zpssnufwy19.jpg.html)

This is from an old RM Williams web page. RMW, so there would be no disputing the quality, they look purdy, but given the $$, I'm not sure that many were sold, and those that were sold, I'd be pretty sure they weren't used riding.

I have a pair of RMW boots, classic style, elastic sides, about cost me about 5% of the above.   Far more than I've ever paid for any footwear, but boy-oh-boy they are comfortable, nonetheless I don't wear 'em on the bike due to the risk of damage.

I also have some Rossi boots from the mid-70's, and a couple of pair of Thomas Cook Johnny Reb high cut boots from the 80's, a brown pair and a black pair (to match my belts).  Just checked the MCA website https://www.mcas.com.au/shop/item/johnny-reb-rogue-boots-01?gclid=CjwKCAiAg9rxBRADEiwAxKDTurvF-dvQyuf4YYeXkL-ZGjQpaeB1if2B3VG23TZ_UzyKU7JqDp0wMxoC1goQAvD_BwE, (https://www.mcas.com.au/shop/item/johnny-reb-rogue-boots-01?gclid=CjwKCAiAg9rxBRADEiwAxKDTurvF-dvQyuf4YYeXkL-ZGjQpaeB1if2B3VG23TZ_UzyKU7JqDp0wMxoC1goQAvD_BwE,) they have something similar (perhaps the real deal) for $240.00.  If they are as good a quality as what I paid $125 for way back then, these would be a good buy now.

Back in the mid 70's when I lived in Cairns.  For riding around town, safety footwear was a pair Adidas Rome, some days it was just a pair of thongs, or less.  The Rossi's were for riding the CREB Track.

I have 3 pairs of Rossi boots. Early 80's motocross/enduro boots with the buckles up the sides. Great boots but the leather around the calf seems to have shrunk - who'd have thought that. Like Wild Rose I have a pair of short (801 Duo) and a pair of calf length (P134) Rossi's. Australian made and super comfy for me. It is a great shame we, as a country, can't make a decent pair of motorcycle boots that are competitive with imports.
Like Michael, I too have a pair of RMW's - purchased in 1974, re-soled about 10 years ago and had the elastic sides replaced about 5 years ago - they look as good as new and also super comfy, although it's a bit of a struggle to pull them on these days - bloody leather must have shrunk like the early Rossi's.

I still have a pair of Rossiters (Rossi's), bought way back in the 80's.
They are still in surprisingly good condition considering I attended heaps of Rallies back in the day...
Unfortunately they too seem to have shrunk...either that or my feet have grown...  :crackup

My Alpinestar boots have started to fall apart... :fp

The gear change protector which is made of rubber has started to break down and has recently become semi detached, something I only discovered when I was about to head off on our last RTE. I quickly stuck it down with some contact adhesive but unfortunately that didn't last long, resulting in it flapping in the breeze while riding back home.

I must say I'm quite disappointed with how long they've lasted as they aren't all that old and haven't had a great deal of use...

Oh well, time to buy a new pair!

And these are what I ended up with...

They arrived in the post this morning and to my surprise they actually fit!  :runyay

After Tassie in 2019 I needed a new pair and were no longer happy with Dririder boots so put it out on the V-strøm facebook page for suggestions and as result ended up with this:

Two years on and I am content.  There's no sign of wear and they are comfortable and waterproof.

I've had Forma boots for about six years now and have had no problems or leaks with them and very comfortable for my feet.

Re my Dainese Centauri's, I wore them most of yesterday just to break them in a bit and found them quite comfortable although with the hard sole they probably wouldn't be the best for walking long distances.

I went for a bit of a ride to try them out and found I had difficulty with gear changes but I guess that will come easier as I get used to the boot...I just need to angle my foot down a little more.

Another "issue" I found is that I can no longer wear my jeans over the boot so need to tuck them into the boot instead.
That doesn't bother me as I prefer them that way, but I'd gotten into the habit of having them over the boot as, for some reason my left boot rubbed against the fairing.
Time will tell if I have that same issue with the new boots...  :popcorn

Probably a $20 to $30 job to stitch on a bit of leather (and better than new) for any decent boot repairer.

That may be so, Michael but I'm guessing the boot would then be no longer waterproof... :think1
Besides that though, the soles are quite worn down...which explains the lack of grip at times when I've come to a stop and put my foot down.

At the end of the day they weren't expensive boots and weren't made from real leather (which probably explains why my feet sweated in them so much).  (https://i.ibb.co/WnFv1wB/Phew.gif)

That's what wax - Dubbin, Nugget, Kiwi boot polish is for.

Got a coupla pair of boots soled 'n' healed only a year or two back for around $80.

You can solve that problem yourself.

80 bucks! I don't think I paid much more than that for the original boots!  :eek

You can solve that problem yourself.

I did...I bought new breathable leather boots!  :grin
Combine that with my mighty bamboo socks and my feet are smelling sweet!  :runyay

Which reminds me, we never did have that sock comparison that we talked about a year or 2 ago!  :whistle

Only some.

I had my RM Williams soled 'n' healed a couple of year back, don't recall cost but think it was $125, cheap compared to current cost (on the RMW website), $165.

The $80 (each pair) for the Thomas Cook Reb boots was costly compared to the original cost of ~$125 (15 years back so stretching the memory), but relative to today's RRP of $250, a good investment.

I decided to buy myself another pair of boots around a month ago as my other pair (see above) are likely to be too hot to wear during Summer...

I ended up with a pair of Alpinestars Ridge V2 Drystar Boots and, while not a huge lover of the red "slashes", I did get them for a good price so I'm prepared to put up with that minor inconvenience.
Due to a few health issues in recent times I have only managed a couple of short rides with them but so far, as far as comfort goes, they are looking good...  :thumbs

They look good Rusty.  AMX dont seem to have those - where did you get 'em?

Mine are the AlpineStars SMX-1 R V2.  I picked them up in a hurry the day before a big ride when I found out at the last minute that my previous boots couldnt be repaired.  At the time I was greateful just to have a pair of boots that didn't have a hole in the left sole, but they are a tad tight and are definitely not waterproof. But I think  I'd have been drawn to sdomething like yours if they'd been in the store.

I got them from MotoHeaven ( https://tinyurl.com/26mukduv ) but I see BikeBiz also have them...

Luckily I'd accumulated quite a few "points" from a previous purchase and from a couple of birthdays since (they give you points that don't expire) so I ended up with a saving of $40...To top things off they actually had the cheapest price as well...oh, and free shipping!  :thumbs

I was wearing Rossi boots for many years but they gave up the ghost back at TAS Rally , and seeing Rossi do not make Bike boots anymore I purchased a pair of Forma boots , they are very comfortable, I went with these because I have a wide foot and many others are too narrow where the Forma brand have the wider fitting.
The only problem with the Rossi boots is the sole the uppers are still in good condition just can’t get the soles repaired apparently because they are a molded sole.

I have a pair of Rossi boots (with moulded soles) from the 1990's, have lasted well as they get worn only 25% of the time due to other boots sharing the load.

I have another pair of boots with moulded soles, soles wore thin with much use, was told they couldn't be repaired, a local repairer was recommended, job done, happy with repair, but will need another re-sole pretty soon.

https://www.google.com.au/maps/place/Chris+The+Cobbler/@-37.7263675,145.0705703,20.03z/data= (https://www.google.com.au/maps/place/Chris+The+Cobbler/@-37.7263675,145.0705703,20.03z/data=)!4m5!3m4!1s0x6ad6466f3e7a0207:0x38d8322b3141279c!8m2!3d-37.7263678!4d145.0706513?hl=en

Was told the story behind the no repairs was due to o/s manufacturers using a type of synthetic that was not compatible with adhesives used for repairs.  Being Australian made, I'd be surprised if the materials used in the Rossi's were not compatible.
