Title: Clutch loose - im lost
Post by: jf3000 on March 25, 2014, 03:44:49 AM
When I bought the bike the clutch I didn't have to pull it in much to change the gears, now I am finding I am nearly pulling it all the way in to change a gear, I am nervous because between how much I have to pull it in and being close to the handle I am dreading what could happen.

Can someone give me some advice on what to go please.

I may have to go seek a higher intervention down in Mt Cotton way wink wink

What colour is the clutch fluid in the reservior ??

When was the fluid changed last and what with ?? Hopefully DOT4.

Buy a bottle of DOT4 ($10-$12) and change the fluid, you can do this process by yourself.

Don't forget to clean the reservior out.  If the bike spends most of the time on the side stand, then the deposits will be on the low side (nearside/left) of the reservoir.

The service schedule indicates that the fluid should be changed at 19.2 and 38.4 (x 1000Km) OR every two years.

copy what Abe said  :clap.
it is likely to be some grit that is contaminating the valve passages.
flush the fluid, clean the reservior, fill and bleed the system completly, 3 times.
You will get the clutch better than what you had!

I love it when STers talk the talk and it goes straight over my head. Bleed? Reservoir? Fluid? Changed?

Come down to my level of knowing Jack, I think I may have to Google this and bring up the images of a storybook to see what you guys are talking about. Knowing my luck I will go to change something, someone will ask me how did I go and i'll come back with something like I had trouble taking the back tyre off, with your comment like WTF!!!!

See where I am going with this :)

I've opted to not go to the mechanic and instead order the part and use the workshop to strip the bike down and replace the part myself instead.

hi jf3000,
can you post the link where you ordered the clutch line and how much it costs?
I have been using the original cltuch line with helibar 3.2 for the past 2 yrs with no trouble.
it is a good idea to change lines if they leak are dry and stiff or older than 8-10 yrs imho.
if the fluid flush fill and bleed gives simmialrreult (ie spongy weak cklutch feel) you will need the master cylinder kit from honda which is not expensive (< $30) and can be replaced providing you have a good circlip plier.

an honest mechanic should charge 30 min labour for fluid flush fill and bleed and another 30 min for master cylinder rebuild (+/- $120)

hope this helps, good luck. :thumbs

Its not the clutch line I am replacing, I am replacing the slave cylinder.

I replaced the fluid, thats took 20mins, after removing the previous dirty brown colored version and now has a nice green color. No expense.
