Progressive 465 Rear Shock
« on: June 16, 2013, 11:14:18 AM »
Hi Guys

I am wondering if any knows anything about the Progressive 465 Rear Shock.

My rear shock has blown out and I am looking for a cost effective replacment, I'm running to
a tight budget, (read cheap ba#@*rd) :fp. I have seen these available on ebay for $447.27 delivered.

Something you might want to look at is the way the preload is adjusted. those screw things take for ever to adjust when your bride decides to come with you.

Late last year I made an enquiry with http://www.suspensionshop.org/index.php (Adelaide) about upgrading to F and R progressive springs. Prices were $169 Front and $730 Rear plus oil, fork seals and $300 +/- for fitting at Dealer

One of the questions I asked was about adjusting the pre-load. No need, once the rear has been set up. I'm a bit sceptical of this but even with the OEM pre-load I have it set on the 4th step for two-up riding as that's what I do 90 percent of the time.

I was asked about our weights, estimated luggage and towing our trailer.

The price quoted for the rear was for standard valving for up to 95KG for the rider and an extra $100 to adjust the valving for over 95KG.

I'm trending towards the Progressive for rear as well. Front Forks are hopefully getting done in a couple months.

I fitted an ikon shock myself to my ST1100, below is my email conversation I had with them about progressive shocks, I fitted an ikon shock myself, and I have set it so that I no longer need to adjust it, just change the damper position slightly  :thumb

It does quite a bit of 2UP work, I could not be happier with it.

Just a different point of view so you have everything to consider....

Hi Gents,
I sent an email to Ikon suspension asking about the difference and Quality of Shoicks to buy, below is my email, and below that is their response:

"Hi Geoff,

Could I trouble you for a little information?

How does the 3610 series compare to the standard adjustable shock I have now?

I have been told by a couple of other ST1100 owners that I can get can get a progressive rear shock for my bike from the US for about $400 landed here:

http://www.jcmotors.com/p-18424-progressive-suspension-465-series-rear-shock-for-honda-st-1100-st1100-abs-motorcycles-199.aspx

How does this compare to the ikon? I would rather shop local If I can, but $285 is a big leap.

Thank you for all the information, I look forward to your response.

Cheers

Graham"

Response

"Hi Graham,

Our mono tube gas pressurised 3610 series for the ST1100 gives a screw thread pre-load with a progressive rate spring. Our rebound control is also adjustable with the shock being fully rebuildable. Typically we find that European themed products which ours is many ways tend to have better spring and valving choices than US made or US specified ones and other parts like bodies and piston rods tend to be more robust. Ironically if we were talking about fork springs I have often found US themed choices to be the better ones.

I can't say I have any experience with the 465 series Progressive. Interestingly one of the features they highlight on the link is the use of a viton seal. In recent times we have moved away from them. They were very fashionable for some years and we have been into that fashion too. However it seems that technology in other materials has now advanced giving us better seal performance at temperatures that higher than viton likes to deal with. That is important in shock absorbers because they can get very hot. Like many things some of these factors do amount to splitting hairs but it is something I find interesting.

You can find more information at the following web address. http://www.ikonsuspension.com/content/product_ranges/3610_series_shocks.shtml

Regards
Geoff"

Thanks guys

Yeah thanks pault I have my preload wound up to the max at the moment to still ride, a bit like a pogo stick that squirms in corners at the moment but at least it dosent bottom out (as much).

Thanks alan1100 that is a bit out of my budget especialy as i'm a bit of a fat ba#@*rd (the other side of 115kgs) :eat  :fp, that ends up over $800.  Mmmmm..... :eek

Streak how much did your Icon cost all up? If its closer to my budget I'd like to buy local, but I do have a $ limit (yeah I'm cheap)

I actually have the Progressive 465 installed, and like Streak I did it myself, which only took about an hour.

I am NOT a small boy as a few people on here know and with my boy, who follows in dad's footsteps, and I on, we bottom out every now and then, but I haven't got it wound right up, and it is a very comfortable ride when I'm travelling by myself.

I put a Hyperpro spring on the original shock and it's solved my bottoming out problems. The spring is marginally thicker than standard which means I don't have to run a lot of preload to get the suspension to work well without being harsh.
If I recall it was about one third the price of a new shock. I guess if the main bodyof the shock craps out I'll have to replace it with something new.

If getting a new shock it would be better to get the right spring for the typical load you will be carrying. Preload only does so much.

Beefa
Hi Beefa, have you adjusted the dampening rate with the small screw at the top of the shock mount? Does make a lot of difference to the 'pogo' effect.
Mine needs a new spring but the dampening is still fine. Anybody got a lead on a new spring other than the ones form pomland as for the approx $250 just for spring is not viable compared to complete shocks. None of the suspension places I have rang will sell just the spring, all will only sell shock as complete unit (the ones with the wind up preload). Alternatively, does anybody know the spring rate for the 1100 so I can get one from King's springs in Brisbane.

Yeah thanks STevo

My shock has bled out all its oil there is no dampening effect at all when i turn the dampening screw.
Its time for a new shock its just a matter of cost, as I said I'm a cheap ba@#*ard.

Thanks Saaz, I've noticed that the preload has stopped me bottoming out as much but with no dampening it "poggoes" a lot and squirms a lot in corners, on entry under breaks and on exit under drive.

Thanks Tackleberry

I think I will get the Progressive 465.

Thankyou everyone

I ordered a new Progressive shock this afternoon.

I did see a couple on Amazon that were cheaper but the postage cost was over double the E-bay one so that's the one I got.

Total cost was $487.10 delivered no thanks to the poor state of our dollar at the moment.

The other option was a new OEM for about $120 cheaper delivered.

The new shock arrived in the mail today.

When the weather fines up (been raining on and off the last few days) I''ll get around to fitting it.

Nice one, I was hoping to order one in the next few weeks, but have just been told that I need to replace my steering head bearings  :|||| . That explains the odd wear pattern on my front tyre and the shuddering under breaks, so I think I should get that done first. :think1
