Finally Finished the Dash shelf off today!

i bought another 2 Ram Ball Mounts so that i can add a GPS if i need to, and also if Teela is with me, i can put her phone on charge, and skip songs if she has one she does not like.

I bought some 3/16 bolts, Butterfly nuts and Spring washers, measured up the shelf (that was made expertly for me by tipsy), and drilled the holes

after i finished bolting everything in, making sure it all lined up and looked good, i got out the black paint and gave everything a coat so that it looks neat and tidy, and hides the silver looking bolt heads, and made the whole shelf the same colour

as i wanted to put it all back together, i risked much harm and stole Teela's hair dryer to heat the edges so that it became touch dry faster (i recommend anyone trying this tactic use much caution and approach with coffee and tim tams first)

And so below is the finished product, a dash shelf with 3 ram mounts, with access to two 12v points so i can power two iPhone's or GPS as needed.

below is the before and after shots, i think it has come up nicely, does not look out of place, i can still see all all of my dash instruments, and it has taken the ram mount of my handle bars that was annoying me quite a lot.

Finished making the shelf for the 1100 today. It's not as pretty as some on here but it looks like it will do the job. I haven't got the wiring connected yet but that won't take long. The film canister attached on the front is the electronics to convert 12v to 5v for the phone. I decided to put a voltmeter on the dash after the battery failure at Kingaroy a few weeks ago.

Just use 3 or 4 mm aluminium mate easier to trim if needed,

As part of the process to replace my timing belt I needed to remove my dash shelf. As yet I haven't replaced it due to the need to relocate my 12 volt power supply.

The original shelf install with GPS mount in place. You might notice the GPS power lead running to the LH pocket. So far the shelf has  worked for me except that with my height I loose the view of the dash warning lights.

I've decided to start from scratch with this little project

The plan is to enlarge the cut-away a further 10-15mm which hopefully should be done tomorrow (18/4) thanks to a neighbor who has a jig-saw. I've sourced and bought a 12 volt, 15 amp waterproof dual socket (sometimes 1 just is not enough) which I have installed on the shelf.

Since then I've got 2 metres of 15 amp lead and an inline 20 amp (need to change fuse to a 15 amp) fuse holder. Just need to get some black paint and touch up the shelf before final install.

The cut away modification to allow me to better see the dash lights was done this morning.

Rather than repaint the shelf I'm getting it powder coated. Cost about $15.00 but I need to remove the paint so it can be done.

I delivered my recently sanded dash shelf to the powder coaters in Port Pirie earlier today. Picked a colour that is close to the grey on our bikes; pick up in two weeks.

That's very good.  Not a huge amount more than a rattle can of paint, and highly durable.

Well finally I managed to re-install the dash shelf and add a waterproof 12 volt dual socket power supply.

First up was to remove the screen which meant a search for the Allen key for the new bolts I installed.

Then remove the Black panel above the headlight.

I knew where to run the wires but I need to remove the dash access panel to feed the wires through. Once that was done the panel was replaced and I could get on with installing the shelf.

The shelf in position but loosely mounted.

With screen on after completion of tightening bolts. Before replacing screen I used some black gaffa tape to keep wiring in place.

Sockets don't interfere with airflow through the cat eye.

Next up was to remove the plastic to gain access to feed the wiring through to the battery and to remove my old temporary 12 volt socket which was not fused and had been in place trouble free for seven years.

The new wiring follows the OEM wiring loom as can be see here

and along side the filler panel

I had ample wire and had to trip off about 6 inches before connecting to Battery. A fuse was installed buy separating the wire and removing the required length of positive wire and soldering in the fused link section in place. Taped all the soldered points and routed the wire to the battery and removed the access. Added a terminal on each wire and connected the wires to the battery.

Next up I mounted the GPS to the dash shelf and it all works.

Hi all,

I've been looking at some sort of mounting solution, I'd seen Tipsy's dash plans when I first started scouring the forum, but now I'm starting to think of how to implement my own setup...  I'm thinking of a flat 'strap' running across the top of the dash, rather than an entire shelf.  Tipsy's design uses the four mounting screws (correct me if I've read the pics wrong here) , which seems pretty stable.  If I were to attach the strap to just the top two screws, closest to the rider (what would you call that, windscreen mounting wings??), do you reckon they (being the 'wings') would be sturdy enough to support an ali strap with a small (ie, eTrex) gps and phone?  (I did notice some vibration of the right 'wing' on my ride through NSW, but that was also with a screen with very sharp upper edges, possibly not as aerodynamically smooth as a nicer screen...)

Thanks  :beer

I've removed the shelf that I posted earlier and in the process of doing a lighter one. Using Tipsy's as a basic template and removing the unused rounded section up front. This section deflects the airflow from the going up the screen to under the shelf. The new shelf will still use the same mounting points and brackets and only needs powder coating. I'm also looking at a permanent fix for my new GPS mount on the shelf as I want to get away from the unreliable suction cup (ok in car but not bike) it came with. I have sourced a mount in the UK for the GPS and one on eBay for the phone which might also work for the GPS.....decisions, decisions etc. ........

I think the idea is ok but with vibration would it not rotate without at least a third anchor point

Quite possibly, good point... Maybe I'll end up doing similar to what you mentioned, taking Tipsy's template for the mounting points but trimming away the excess (curved back).  I've got a weekend to myself this weekend, lets see if I can rustle up some motivation!

Mine is similar to Tipsy's, but made of black acrylic (perspex). The cross mount on the front is a piece of aluminium angle suitably cut and bent and the other two mounts are just aluminium flat suitably bent. There is no vibration and plenty of room to mount things. For a really secure mount, bolt through the angle as well and it all binds together nicely.
Cheers
