This mechanism can become very stiff.  It responds well to the application of some lubricant.  I take the easy way out and spray some WD40 or similar into all the moving parts.  The smooth action lasts for months.

It can get stiff indeed, wet weather and road grime etc.....put some graphite pwdr in mine only a couple of weeks ago  ;-*

It it moves and it shouldn't  -  Gaffer Tape
If it doesn't move & it should  -  WD40

Anything else is far too technical for me.    :beer
