A day ride
« on: November 16, 2014, 11:58:38 AM »
I hadn't cleaned or defarkled the ST since the OzStoc group SS1600K so it was the clear choice to take on yesterday's day ride. It was almost eery being back in Gundagai  :crazy

I think I'm going to have to ride it more!

Goodonya Craig for another ss1600k.   I'm amazed with the way well experienced LD riders feel like a ride, and simply pull off a 1600 as a day trip to blow the cobweb away.    Far more planning (read prevaricating)  will go into my next one, and I'm looking at Adelaide to Coober Pedy and return, which may not be until sometimes next year.   I'll probably look for someone to ride it with me.

In the meantime, my love of more leisurely touring will be taking me on separate trips to Tassie in Dec-Jan and Toowoomba NatRally with the cook, and another trip to FNQ in May with my touring mates.

I love it out there Pete.  None of the bikes I've done it on had the fuel range to get between Coober and Port Augusta on a tank.  If you carry 5 litres on the ST you won't have to worry about whether Pimba or Glendambo will be open as you go past.

So leave Adelaide whatever time you like, make sure you fill up at Port Augusta, make sure you fill up at Coober Pedy (24hr fuel there) when you turn around. Fill up again at Port Augusta and ride home.  There you go, plan done  :thumbsup

Distance from Port Augusta to Coober Pedy is 474 km.......that doesn't look right
--------------------------Added on edit -----------
" north 288 km to Cooper Pedy and 186 km North of Port Augusta" is what they quote on the Glendambo site but Google says 543 km for the same distance

Don't rely on the closing times of outback servos. If business is slack they may close an hour earlier than the stated times.
An ST1300 carrying 5 litres of fuel should be able to travel from Port Augusta to Darwin refuelling at 24 hr servos - Port Augusta, Coober Pedy, Marla, Alice Springs, Tennant Creek, Katherine and Darwin.
Good to see you at Urana, Craig, and a good RR as usual.

Sage advice oh Lord of the Stuart.  :-++  And there's no point burning 10 minutes or so getting a docket and logging the stop if you can toss the 5 litres in, if you need it, whenever it suits you to have a roadside break.  Glendambo's OK but the walk from the pumps and the slooowww staff at Pimba makes you wish you had a tardis!  Don't even think about asking what to do with the empty cup they give you if you ask for a coffee  :-(((

Good RR, Craig. Enjoyed the story and pics

I don't have any certificates for what I have done, I never bothered... suffice to say that I have the memories of many many many miles covered, over many years.
