I modified & painted joist hangers for my under mirror spots.  Bent, cut, painted, and bolted in after filing a 3mm deep groove in the mirror cover.  Bit fiddly, but only needed a drill, vice, file, tinsnips, black paint, and some washers

Thanks DavidP, any chance of posting a photo or two to give me an idea.  I had thought of making my own

Hi,  just continuing this old topic,  I have my spots (50w Runway Gold, 500g each) mounted using the police over-mirror mounts, but I’d really like them under the mirrors instead.

I’ve been playing around and come up with something like the below using a piece of aluminium tube as a spacer.

The only problem for me is that it would require me to cut a substantial V-shape out of the mirror housing, rather than the shallow 3mm notch that DavidP and some others have indicated.

I’d rather not hack out big chunks of plastic only to later find a better way.   I’m wondering if anyone who has done their own under-mirror mounts could post some photos to show how they did it.

I did something very similar, you will have to cut bit of plastic to allow the mirror cover to sit flush though.

I would go with slightly heavier gauge brackets and make spacers with the same material, flats cut and drilled. You might find your brackets cracking at the mounting point with the spacer you plan on using.

Yeah, makes sense. But what do you mean by “ spacers with the same material, flats cut and drilled. ”. ?

Make your spacers with the same bracket, just buy an extra one or two. Cut into squares and drill to the size of bolt you are using. You will need two or three pieces each side to clear the fairing. Tape or supaglue them together for easy fitting 👍

Make your spacers with the same bracket, just buy an extra one or two. Cut into squares and drill to the size of bolt you are using. You will need two or three pieces each side to clear the fairing. Tape or supaglue them together for easy fitting 👍

Thanks for the pointers JD. Many weeks later, this DIY wannabe eventually got the job done.

The brackets were 25mm x 6mm heavy duty brackets, powder coated white, from Bunnings.  As you suggested I grabbed an extra, and cut it up into squares and glued them together to make the spacer.

I was really keen on using the most solid brackets I could find, but 25mm was really a tad wide for both brackets and spacers so I had to do some trimming as shown in the photo below. A coat of white paint and we are good to go. The white powder coating means that any later paint chips won’t be so noticeable.

Installed:

A neat notch in the mirror cowl with a Dremmel:

Final result:

So it’s done, after much trial and error and two weekends of mucking about  ;-*
