Rear diff

Hi guys,
I'll admit right from the start that I'm not much of a mechanic so please excuse my ignorance :). I own a '05 1100PY (had it for about a month) and I thought I would be time to get real serious and check all the fluid/oil levels. The engine oil is no problem (I changed that + new filter when I got the bike home) but I was wondering how to check the oil level in the rear diff? All the manuals (and thank you, Brock, for the link on the manual you posted!) don't tell me...at least I haven't found anything on the oil level etc. Before I undoing bolts etc. I thought it would be good to find out first which one :). Any help would be great.

EP 80 oil is recomended but I use 80/90 because that's all I could fine.

Level is the same as on any usual diff on a car/bike.........just below the filler hole.

The manual tells you the amount to put in, its a very small amount, 130 ml a 500ml bottle will last you a few years.

I use an oil syringe  (Available at Repco) to refill the oil. With bike on centre stand, undo fill and drain plugs and catch oil in suitable container. refit drain plug and fill with new oil. I fill to the lip of the fill hole (or 130ml if you can measure it), refit fill plug. 15 minutes and job is done. Hypo 80/90 is good.

Don't fret Lionel.  It's only the WA guys whose bikes have differentials.  You and I have Final Drives.

Surely doesn't a Differential fit between the two back wheels of a car to keep the speed DIFFERENTIAL between the wheels from scrubbing one tyre when going round corners??? ...now I know 1100's are different but surely not THAT different! (Spoken like a true Electronics Engineer!)

When you decide to change the oil make sure the bike is on the centre stand.

When I got my bike I had to clean the oil of the drive housing every so often...........who-ever checked the oil before I had the bike must have checked it while on side stand (yes, it does happen) and over filled it. Excess oil came out through the breather.

Dont worry about em Mypod, some of these guys became mechanical experts once they figured out how to turn the key, especially the "Engineers".

The only thing that matters is that those who know stuff, understood what you meant and gave advice.

I secretly changed the diff oil while you were distracted during tyre chnages...Honda does not give an interval for changing the oil, but I do it every year or so as it is cheap to do. Unless there is a leak the original oil might last out the bike.

Final drive.......replace every two years or 36,000 kms or 24,000 miles (rounded to the nearest 1000).

Guess every third engine oil change you do the final drive as well.

mine drive has only been done twice at 80,000kms and 140,000kms......

So it does.  I should have checked as trying to catch up with lots of things at once.  Many final drives are supposedly filled for life, so I think extended changes would be ok, especially as gear oil stinks so much!
