Title: SA RTE Ideas for 2018
Post by: alans1100 on August 14, 2017, 10:40:21 AM
It's time for SA members to wake up or get their brains into gear and start getting ideas for 2018 RTEs

Ideally one or two overnight suggestions and six to eight day RTEs would be welcome.

Middleton Tavern
Finnis General Store Cafe   http://www.finnissgeneralstore.com.au/ (http://www.finnissgeneralstore.com.au/)
Marion Bay (overnight) for the famous wood oven pizza   http://www.marionbaytavern.com.au/ (http://www.marionbaytavern.com.au/)
Royal Hotel Balaklava (the meal when we went before was fantastic)   http://www.royalhotelbalaklava.websyte.com.au/ (http://www.royalhotelbalaklava.websyte.com.au/)
Coorong Cafe at Sugars Beach on Hindmarsh Island.   https://www.facebook.com/coorongcafe/ (https://www.facebook.com/coorongcafe/)    I would suggest this for a summer evening ride for Fish and Chips.

I don't know much about the first two but I do like the other two.   Marion Bay overnight was something I had already considered so I hope it falls on a weekend I can get away.

I'll update the list later to add ;-

Melrose http://www.northstarhotel.com.au/ (http://www.northstarhotel.com.au/) - We've done before
Clare Bakery  https://www.facebook.com/clarerisebakery1895 (https://www.facebook.com/clarerisebakery1895) - we had lunch there when we collected the new screen off of Richo.

Opinions expressed at Burra Gorge suggest that more RTEs like this should occur and this location can be either a day ride or an overnighter.
Winkler Park just South of Saddleworth could also be another option for a BYO picnic type RTE see our report here http://ozstoc.com/index.php?topic=7764.msg89331#msg89331 (http://ozstoc.com/index.php?topic=7764.msg89331#msg89331)

Marion Bay overnight was something I had already considered so I hope it falls on a weekend I can get away.
Dates are flexible until the ride is listed in the calendar. Suggest a date that suits you (goes for anyone else as well) and see what happens.

About dates; I prefer to post RTEs that don't conflict with other states dates which opens up other options. I also try and keep 4 to 6 weeks either side of the national rally RTE free.

Anyone can post an upcoming ride that they're doing during the year and open it up to the club; just ask if you need help.

My roster is hard to predict at the best of times, but given that Adelaide Metro like to tinker with timetables every Australia Day run changes means shift changes which in turn means it is less likely for forecast a roster.  At Brisbane Transport we could get our new diary for the following year and fill out the whole year's work and calculate if you had to swap christmas day the following year if you didn't want to work it.

Gladstone gaol, provided it's not in the depths of winter. It's a hoot - you get your own cell and great cooking facilities for breaky (I recommend dinner at the pub, a short walk from the gaol and pretty good value, but if the consensus was snags and salad at the gaol, i'd be in that as well). To make a great weekend even better we could call into the Stone Hut bakery. They make the best pies in the universe - it says so on their wall (and it's true!!!)

Count me in on that one. Same proviso - not the depths of winter. And we could do some ghost hunting  :eek  :rofl

Bit of a trek for me,  but I've stayed there and is a great site. Free camp with toilet facilities and right next to the ferry,  not much in Narrung itself but not far too Meningie which has lots of eating places.

Just gone through next year's calendar and with avoiding school and public holiday weekends I came up with the following. I left June clear as it's usually cold and wet and Jan has school holidays.

I'm looking at posting the first three rides in about a week's time as I won't have much free time after that in the next few months with the grain harvest due to start.

Jan -

3rd/4th Feb - Marion Bay O/nite

10th Mar - Ardrossan Hotel

7th Apr - Melrose Hotel

19th/20th  May - Waikerie 0ptional O/nite

30th June - Clare bakery

4/08/2018                Border Ride

10-12/08/2018        National Rally

25 - 27th Sept - Nurrung O/nite - Meningie Hotel

20 Oct - Balaklava

17th -18th Nov - Robe O/nite

8th Dec Finnis Store

Some ideas for RTE's close to Adelaide are the Pomegranate Cafe at Birdwood,  the Strathalbyn Corner Bakery,  the Meadows Bakery, or the Greenman Inn at Ashbourne.  All have good food and are and easy ride from Adelaide.

Do you still do the midweek coffee runs to the Pomegranate Café?

It's still listed as a scheduled ride, but there seems to be little interest and I've not had anyone express interest for some time.  I still think it's worth leaving it as a regular event, for anyone looking for a mid-week run.

"Pomegranate Cafe at Birdwood" thanks Pete and near the museum for anyone wishing to have a look.

Richo suggested Tailem Bend which I had a look at and all I could find was the April Race which I put up on Facebook and here. We might go to after I mentioned it to Heather this morning.

Danae (BlueOwl) has recently moved to SA to finish high school, staying with my brother in Coromandel Valley.  She may well come along to some of the closer RTE's in the cage, and hopefully I'll be able to time some of my visits to her with RTEs too  :grin

It'd be great to see BlueOwl at one of our RTE's.   :thumb

I went to the Finniss General Store Café today.  It was pretty good.  It is up for sale so could change hands in the meantime.
I just contacted the cafe via Facebook and it's not up for sale - need to make sure before I posted the ride.

15 - 16th Sept 2018 - Meningie Hotel/ Nurrung SA O/nite RTE

Feedback wanted;

Nurrung as an overnight and Meningie were suggested and due to their closeness I though putting them together as for over night RTE might work.

I'll give it a few weeks before going with the most popular option. Have another idea?; lets us know.

A few options;

Sat lunch at Meningie and BYO food for Sat evening at Narrung - we can bring a couple camping stoves with the trailer for plus ice box and ice

Toss the cooking all together and meet at Meningie hotel for dinner (evening meal) then ride over to Narrung for the night - take any BYO food you might need at Narrung - again we can supply a stove or two for any tea or coffee needed plus the ice box and ice.

Set up camp as people arrive during the afternoon and a group ride to Meningie for dinner  - not sure how safe the area is and would stuff go missing if no one is there?

:bl11.   I wouldn't leave the campsite unoccupied to go to the pub in the evening unless someone was willing to stay behind.I would be happy to volunteer .2pub meals in a day would be a bit much for me .there are fire pits at the campground and firewood is available at the ferry to purchase .so anyone who wants to do a bit of bush cooking could on the campfire ,including breakfast. We may all smell like a bunch of hoboes at the end but a brisk ride may get rid of the stale smoke!

I wasn't thinking of two hotels meals in a day either.

Meet at the hotel for either lunch or dinner (dinner or tea for some of us) then over to Narrung.

If you do lunch at the hotel then you need BYO food for Narrung.
If you do dinner at the hotel you then only need BYO for what you need over night and the morning - toss the cooking

Not much feed back for this one.

For us it's a little to far for a day trip (700km return) with Heather's recent shoulder operation though not impossible so an overnight RTE makes sense for us.

Might just make this one a day RTE for lunch at the hotel and just mention Narrung for those who wish to make an overnighter out of it.

I'll give it another week before I post the ride up.
