I'm pretty much certain to be at this.

We used to go to Marion Bay for holidays back in the 50's/60's, the only thing there was a jetty with train lines to cart wool to the clipper ships, we had to walk to the highway and wait for the milkman.
It is hard to believe it is now a town.

I didn't think there were train lines south of Moonta on Yorke Peninsula,  although I did see a couple of metres of track on display in Balgowan.

More than likely a private rail set up for the old Gypsum mine which closed down about 1930

Has anyone looked at accommodation for this?  Most places seem to have a minimum of two nights which is no good for me.

The linked Caravan Park in the first post is ok for one night.

Not for a cabin.

edit: it does say one night may be possible further down the page so I sent a message to confirm.

I have got a reply from said caravan park.  They did say one night is possible and we can get a discount if their are sufficient bookings.

If we don't get enough takers due to accommodation issues (minimum night stays etc.,) it's still feasible as day ride.

I'd prefer lunch to an overnight, but since I am doubtful will fit in with others if I can make it.

Marion Bay is about 600km return from Adelaide.

About 560 return from Adelaide and 700 km return for us.

600km return days are normal for us. Dad in Loxton is 580 return

I've just sent a message to the Marion Bay tavern re lunch time hours on Saturdays. Will update as soon as I know.

More than likely a car trip for us as I was planning to take the bike off the road for a week or two at the end of January to fix up some wiring issues behind the headlight as the left globe keeps going off - loose contact/bare wire somewhere. The top fairing needs to come off so I can see in there to fix.

Response from the Tavern.

Cheers Alan. Our dining room is open from 12-2 on Saturdays for lunch and we also offer wood oven pizza all day from 11am onwards. Please call 08 88544141 for any bookings

Judging by the recent posts it seems a day ride has more preference; maybe 11:30 to 12 midday meet at the Tavern. I can update the ride to suit if need be.

Hi John, previous feedback suggest a day ride might have been better so I changed it. That doesn't prevent anyone staying overnight but at least with Marion Bay a two night minimum seems to be the norm.

Just spent the last 5 minutes or so planning a route for this.

With having to pass with a few kms of Clare I decided to make a stop off at the proposed Bakery for the RTE later on in the year.

To be safe as far as fuel goes we're aiming for the BP at Maitland and the United in Port Wakefield on the way home.

Logged this route into my TomTom https://goo.gl/maps/uFTKtQdaNHx

Sorry for dragging the chain - I'm a yes and will be staying o/night, tenting it unless someone is looking for a body to share a cabin and costs. Generally house trained and only snore when asleep (actually the frighteningly expensive mouth stent keeps the snoring in check if you are lucky).

Sorry, I'm now a non-starter. People who were going to visit us this weekend have changed the date to the 3rd  :||||. On top of that I've found a significant left front fork leak and the LHS front calliper is moving slightly and I can't tighten it to stop the movement plus it's due for a service  :-[. If things change re the visit and I can get the bike issues sorted I might be able to make it but I wouldn't put money on it.
Cheers ... Mark

Query LH Calliper -

As far as I'm aware all 1300's have combined brakes (CBS) and the LH side does move to operate a secondary master cylinder.

The 1100A from 1996 does the same which is what the 1300 brake system was based on.
We only had one year of the earlier 1100A without the CBS system

Thanks Alan
The service manager said the same when I rang him this morning. The front end also has a horrible clunk when I ride over the dreadful excuses we have for roads here in SA. I don't know if it is related to the fork oil leak, I guess I'll find out when it gets serviced - which is after the 3rd so I'm a definite non-starter.
Have a great ride folks, I might make it to the Ardrossan RTE.
Cheers ... Mark

I will know after this weekend if I am a starter.   I have a commitment that I've paid for this Saturday that may get deferred to the following Saturday because of the 42 degree forecast, which will disappointing as I was looking forward to a decent ride.

Slight change of transport for us as I'm taking the bike off the road for four to six weeks until I can fix the headlight plugs, change coolant (it's due in a few months), update the gauge globes (choice of blue or pink), swap over the cracked RH filler panel (had one waiting for over a year) and the clock light globe can get done if I can remember where I put the new globe.

My commitment went ahead this morning, despite the possibility of cancellation due to heat.   Therefore I'm back on target as a starter for lunch at Marion Bay, so long as it's not too hot, since my ride fitness and endurance is pretty low at the moment due to my chemo treatment.

Can I suggest a 0830 meeting at the usual Caltex Bolivar for Adelaide riders, for the 264km ride to Marion Bay from there.  That should give us time for a cuppa at Port Wakefield and an arrival at Marion May around midday.

Shillas, do you still have the SA flag?

Good to hear.  I won't be meeting with you at Bolivar.  I'll probably leave a lot earlier with the purpose of having a ride around the national park at the bottom.  The only other time I went there I didn't know about the fees and never got to go in.

With a trip to Port Augusta yesterday this one is no longer possible for us.

We were going to check out the bakery at Clare again on the way down so instead of Port Pirie next week we'll do Clare instead as it's about the same distance from home.

:cuss  I am a very late apology.

Left the pub after a farewell drink to find that the battery on Candy has died.  :'(

RAA got me started again, but she's not holding charge. I've managed to get the 42km home, with the ABS warning light coming on about a third of the way back. I'm hoping that is related to the battery.

Unfortunately, I also have the flag. :-[

I nearly followed in your footsteps after leaving the indicator on overnight, leaving the battery without enough umph to turnover.  Likewise the RAA got me going and I didn't shut it down until I got to Port Wakefield.  It held it's charge and I completed the day without incident.
