Air Horns
« on: March 20, 2016, 09:54:11 AM »
Hi guys and girls, is there any reason you can't use the existing horn wires to fit a air horn.
The horn would use a relay wouldn't it?

Thanks,
Tom.
Regards,
Tom, aka Panman50.

Compact airhorns fitted using existing horn wiring to fire up a relay. Sound great!

The Stebel draws 19 Amps and the original horn uses less then 10 Amps. The Air Horn therfore needs a seperate relay and fuse.

I found out the hard way that using the original horn wires and fuse/relay didn't work on a longish blast at an errant motorist. The fuse blew.

Even though I'd supplied Airhorn and relay, Team Moto at Virginia didn't think the relay was required.
Cheers,
Gary

Gadget is right, I used the original horn wires to activate the relay supplied with the airhorns, the power for the airhorns is supplied by cable directly from the battery to the relay, thus using the OEM horn wiring in this way draws very little current . . Just enough to switch on the relay . . Never had any problems with this circuitry.

Have a look at this link (It's for the ST1300 but should be almost the same setup on the ST1100 :thumbsup)

And I think they're vital if you're into riding at night.  I discovered the roos sit up to see what's making that sound (my roo whistles) and then I see them and blow the Stebel and they head straight into the bush.  Also shifts the crows off the roadkill earlier than just the noise of the approaching bike.
Works with idiot drivers the same, except they just head back into their own lane.

I'm fairly partial to Goldwing OEM horns. Has anyone done a "Sound off" between them and the Stebel Airhorn?

I've got both in the garage ATM.  I'll try them tomorrow- not a neighbour-friendly time right now.

Goodo.  I'll tell you when I'm about to do the trial and you can give me the reading as detected at 10 km.   :grin

OK.  Independent Scientific Analysis completed.

The Stebel wins by a db, but the Wing horn has more class- kinda like a classic train "horn".

If Gadget would like to swing by with his gadget, we can Independently Verify Observation.     :p
