New ST1100AY owner

Joined Oztoc end of last year and must say that the ST sites around the world have been invaluable in getting the right information to rebuild the bike.
Got it as a 'Repairable Write off' from Victoria: The bike was well looked after and just been "slid down the road" on its side, so mainly plastics damage. I did a full over haul on the bike anyway, as I did not know its history.
The Tier 3 inspection was a pain, as they admitted themselves, the Nanny State Government wants to stop people fixing repairable write offs altogether.
As I have mainly been doing Dirt riding the last 15 years, I found the weight of the bike a struggle in tight corners (anything under 45km), but have enjoyed the few rides I have had so far on more open roads - just purrs at 110km.
Looking forward to catching up at one of the events some time in the future

You will soon get used to the weight, it is a little top heavy on corners at low speed, but if you look at where you want to go and add a little power, the feeling goes away.

When I got my ST1100, my first Big Bike, I couldn't imagine I would ever master it.
I took it down to the local carpark and did slaloms and figure 8s between half tennis balls to build my confidence.  Brock's suggestion about keeping the power up (braking and slipping the clutch- you won't burn it out) will enable tight turns comfortably.

Get onto Marylou Nees at Garage Motorcycles in Strathalbyn and ask about doing some rider training.  Her rates are pretty good and the training can be tailored to your own needs.   I've done a couple of sessions with her and it's excellent value.

I used to commute on mine when I first got her. Took me a little while to get used to going through those small suburbia type round-a-bouts at 50 k/p/h like I could do on the CX500. The weight wasn't an issue except at speeds below 10-15 k/p/h which would be your average filtering speed. I only started doing u turns in town with her a few years ago as I never need to do them before and I'm still not comfortable doing them two-up. However, I can back the trailer and see where I'm going with just the mirrors.

Thanks for all the welcoming messages, like I said I hope to catch up with some other ST1100 riders soon. Seeing sooo many 'cruiser' bikes on the road now and the roads in SA have certainly deteriorated since I had my XJ900 (22 years ago) - love shaft drive bikes, who cares for the extra few horsepower when you have to put up with all the maintenance of a chain.
I have been riding bikes all my life and after coming back to Adelaide from Brisbane, I got into MX riding.
My CRF450R is 100kg and 48hp, so more power to weight than the ST1100 and easier to through around, so it has taken a bit of getting used to but I am enjoying it
