Why didn't you tell me that before I bought the Metzelers Streak??

You won't regret the Metzellers.  They're a quality tyre that perform well.

Young One's problems turned out to be a rear wheel bearing that failed because the tyre fitter over-torqued the rear axle.

On that subject, I wonder if it was out of spite, because Tony especially asked them to be sure to tighten the axle after the same tyre fitter failed to tighten mine a few years ago.

I used the Z6s and found them quite good through the life of the tyre. Overseas, those who then used the Z8 were very impressed (zealot like even!)

Sounds a bit funny that YoungOne's symptoms were the same as mine and mine was definately the tyre and I ended up using the same guys to sort mine out yesterday. From my experience, I found that the tyre fitters were inclined to under torque the axle nut rather than over-tighten it.

I was also of the understanding that YoungOne's problems went away when a new tyre was fitted?? His old one is still at the shop concerned.

On first inspection, after fitting the Z8, we found that the inner drive flange bearings on mine had collapsed. Are you sure it was a wheel bearing rather than the drive flange bearings? Just a question as I was also told I had bad wheel bearings. The inner drive flange has two narrow ball bearings that are open to contamination.

I would imagine it is a long shot, and a long bow to draw, to point the 'finger of spite' at the tyre fitters. Most of them would tighten the axle nuts up to two clicks of the elbow I would imagine. The problem being the calibration of the elbow and how many wheaties they had for breakfast. Hence a good reason to have a good torque wrench and check things like axle nuts, brake caliper mounting bolts and clamp bolts after someone else has played with them. I once came across a guy on the Putty Road, Singleton end, with his from calipers swaying in the breeze and only one bolt left in them. His bike had just been serviced in Windsor.

Cheers

We'll have to wait for Young One to come back in and comment.  I saw the bearings last weekend and I believed them to be wheel bearings.  The symptoms only appeared immediately after the tyre change, and finally went away with new bearings after many trouble-shooting efforts.

I replaced the Bridgestone battlax's, these had 24,000 on them when replaced, for Metzeler Z6 front and Z8 rear.
Had extreme vibration up through seat from the rear tyre, when wheel taken off and placed on static balance the weight of excess rubber caused tyre to fall straight to bottom regardless of where it was let go. Bought a replacement Z8 (the old one is having a claim negotiated) this one has no balance issues and vibration has all but disappeared. Think what vibration that is left is due to tread pattern.
Also discovered that the large rear wheel bearing had lost dust seal and the ball bearing cage had all but come apart, the smaller bearing had a cracked case in 2 places.
I purchased my St with 12,000 ks and have covered 20,000 since then.

Tried the Metzeler Z8 rear/Z6 front combination only to have issues with the bike.
Yesteday we tried fitting a replacement Z8 on the rear with a slight improvement. Now back to a Bridgestone 023 on the rear and Voila!, the bike is back to what one would expect an ST to be like.
End result, Metzeler Z6 front and Bridgestone 023 on the rear.
Had some uneasy feeling on the bike at times with the BT-023(R)/Z6(F) combination so had the Z6 replaced today with a BT-023. End result, now back to Bridgestone with BT-023 on front and rear. Goodbye to the German &*^%&^%!!!!

Yesterday, I had a PR3 put on the front with a right-angle valve stem.... and  100m down the road I had a knob-head turn across my path at the traffic lights - a puckering moment on new front rubber.

The old tyre thrown in the bin (original BT020) had just reached it's wear bars - at 24,500 km (and the rear original BT020 still has a couple 1000 left) - very happy with that. I'm told the PR3 will last longer... time will tell.

My rear Mitcy PR3 had approx 16,500 k's on it took it for one last run last week before I fitted a new one outside temp was showing 42/43 took her out through Litchfield (only corners up here well 140k corners) stopped further down the road for a feed came out did the usual bike check and noticed the whole right side had delaminated with two sections competely gone. Different ride home at 80 instead of the ride down at ????k's on occasions. :whistle :whistle

Had the new tyre fitted another PR3 the guy mentioned he sees a lot of them up here with the same delamination problem, will definately be keeping a close eye on this one.

My set of Shinko Verges are about done after the Lightning Ridge FarRide.  They are 120/70 front and 170/60 rear. Grip and handling still fine, but a slight speed deceleration wobble has appeared for the first time ever.  I have worn these tyres right down (but still with tread!) as they have been very consistent over their life.  17,000kms so far which is at least 4000kms better than anything else I have tried.  For $220 the set from the US and fitted myself, not too bad.  The bike is cheaper to run than the car once tyre cost go down.

For price these look pretty good at the moment $253 delivered.

How did they perform in the wet?  Tread pattern looks more suited for a dry road than a wet one. If the're ok I'll order in a couple weeks.

As good as anything else I have used, which surprised me.  I have used them in heavy rain and all conditions in between to dry. They are a slightly harder riding tyre than say the PR2s I have on at the moment, but I only noticed it when I changed tyres to the PR2s.

PR2s have lasted around 14,000kms and the front is due for a change, so both will be changed.  Can't really fault then in any conditions, cost is thier only downside.

I'm running Michelin PR2s front and rear. I had them fit at Tyres for Bikes on the Sunshine Coast on the way home from Middleton.

Not as gripy as the Pirelli ST Angels, I loved them...

So I may go back to the Pirelli's , I know i wont get as many K's out of them but they felt more secure.

Go down just once and any extra K's you'd get on the michelins is wiped out.

Just reshod the St13 with PR3s.  Got 23,000 out of the last pair.  The rear was well past its prime.  $440 fitted in Brendale.
Did rear brake pads at the same time.  Got 30,000 out of the Metal Gear pads.

Pilot Road 2s now replaced with the same again (110/80-18 front, 170/60-17 rear).  Got 17,600 out of the pair, but they were down to the wear bars and starting the handle a bit strangely in the corners due to the wear patterns - the front just did not match the back any more.  The rear still had some centre tread left but the sides were cactus. I used dynabeads for balancing, but have nothing to judge against until I put on some tyres I have used before with weights.

Front and rear brake pads will be due in the next 10,000kms.  The fronts were put on when I replaced the front rotors, all metal gear.  Rotors are in great condition after 83,000kms, pads have lasted the same distance so I think I will go for more of the same.  Sintered pads I have used before lead to premature rotor wear (replaced at 100,000kms), and lasted only 20,000kms or so.

I still have the original rotors on mine. After 152,000kms there is no visible signs of wear. Apart from one cheap set of pads I have used OEM pads. Now on third set of pads since new.

Ready for my next rear tyre. The Avon Storm 2 Ultra is now smooth on the sides!.. My neighbouring bike shop only has a Dunlop Road Smart in stock!! :(
Jake Wilson doesn't advertise any tyres to suit the ST rear (ABS) of 160/70 17.. Would like the Michelin to match the front tyre now.

Any suggestions?

A 170/60 rear is the next best option (ST13 rear tyre size). They are bit more available.

The only ones JW have for the 1100 are the Bridgestone 23s. with the GT front and the standard rear. They sell fairly quickly and mine had to go on back order. I ordered the GT spec in 1300 sizes (170/60 rear) which I have yet to put on. My front is already on and have only done 800 kms on it.

If you want the Michelin just order the 1300 size and you should be ok. A few 1100 riders on here don't have issue running them.
