AIR FILTER (K & N) CLEANING As demonstrated by Diesel :thumbsup
Undo the bolts holding the tank down and raise the tank.
Remove the screws holding the air filter cover down and raise or remove the cover exposing the air filter

Clean the filter in a bucket of car wash

Rinse and leave to dry (or just use an air compressor :grin)

When dry spray on the new K & N air filter oil (just a light coating will do it)

Replace air filter, screw down the air filter cover and the tank

...and Biggles - those pliers r nicely lubricated these days just 2 make u happy m8 (and me 2) :p

My comment on this one is, you save the agro of removing the EFI plug at the back of the air box cover if you do as suggested and just raise the cover high enough to get the filter out.
K&N make a filter cleaner solvent- it comes in the service kit you buy from the auto store for under $30. That's the one that includes the light oil for re-oiling. Has anyone used any other type of light oil? If so, using the detergent and alternative oil would save buying the K&N kit.

What Diesel used was the K&N filter oil. I checked because I also have a K&N as well.

Just one thing guys . . Shouldn't the oil be sprayed on the inside of the filter . . Not the outside?
The reason being that on the ST1300 the outside of the filter is actually the inside of most airfilters and the inside is where the outside air comes into the chamber . . .

Hi team - I did use the K&N oil in the aerosol kit, and was also pleasantly surprised to see how much extra gunk and bug guts the compressed air blast got out.
I did give the inside a light coating, but thought the outside needed a hit as well - you may be spot on STroppy in saying only the inside needs spraying - not sure on this one.
As for using other oils.... I wouldn't do that myself, as this oil is designed and formulated by the manufacturer of the air filter and would contain all the ideal science for the filter. I can't see myself ever needing to buy a second can, as you use so little of the contents, and do the job so occasionally - it will take a long time to use up the oil.

I'm no tech head but does the K&N really make any difference?
Look I had one on the Bird but replaced with the standard one (I didn't notice any difference), but then maybe I don't go fast enough to notice.

Hard to notice a difference in performance and/or fuel consumption but as the K&N is a cleanable, rechargeable, reusable air filter there are dollar savings in not having to buy a OEM filter at every change . .

I have seen a dyno graph of before and after a K&N, but don't know if the supposed increase is noticeable. I found that even the minor difference the staintunes made to the ST1100 were soon forgotten.
