Excessive Engine Whine/Squeel
« on: March 29, 2021, 10:43:25 AM »
Hello, Brainstrust!
I know the STs are known for their engine squeel, but I feel mine is increased significantly in the last week. I adjusted the balance shafts on the weekend, but this did not seem to make much difference. Is there anything else I should consider as cause?

Very hard to diagnose without hearing it. It could be just a normal sound, or even a cracked exhaust heat shield.

Thanks Brock, yes might just me being paranoid. I guess I'll have to compare with another.

You will have to get to an RTE, to see a variety of bikes, and ask for opinions. There are a bunch of knowledgeable people on here, and some of it is even useful.

Hi Richen. My st 1300 has just clicked over 200.000ks  and I can tell you the squeal comes from the straight cut gears from the rear of the engine take your seats off and it will be worse. There are huge straight cut gears there just to drive the alternater.Ive owned my bike for 17 years from new and I've noticed over the years it gets louder and louder.mine is ear piercing at 2000 rpm without a load on it.earmuffs are nearly a must it doesn't come from balancers.you can fix it by replacing the gear pack on the rear of the engine but a big job.with high kms and 67yrs of age I'll put up with it.listen to v8 supercars same thing straight cut gears in transmission.more horse power.cheers Brian
