I am just about to change the oils on my ST1300A. I would like your thoughts on an oill to use. I used Penrite HPR10 gas in my Beemer and I have checked that this is compatible with the ST. Please throw some suggestions at me. :think1

Please throw some suggestions at me.
Before someone throws a sarcastic "Oh no, not OILS again" at you, go and read the Oils Threads. There is a world of info in there before we mount our hobby horses. Wot thuh
-
Oh dear,
Another oil thread.... :grin :grin
Have a look here, http://ozstoc.com/index.php?topic=793.0 (http://ozstoc.com/index.php?topic=793.0) , or here http://ozstoc.com/index.php?topic=934.0 (http://ozstoc.com/index.php?topic=934.0) , or here. http://ozstoc.com/index.php?topic=40.0 (http://ozstoc.com/index.php?topic=40.0) .
Its one of those recurring threads, that applies to both models of bike. Similar threads exist for oil filters and air filters as well.
-
SNAP !! :crackup
-
My apologies all. I thought I was in the oils and filters thread. Thought it was strange there was only 4 topics. Thanks for the link. :thumbs
-
Ahhh. It was in the 1100 section. :||||
-
There used to be one oils etc section, but some one decided to segregate the bikes
:well :well :well
-
I have used Penrite HPR10 gas for quite a few years in my previous 02 ST1300
but since i had talk to the service manager I have decided to run Honda Oil in my new ST1300
While it is covered by warrenty. Then when it is out of warrenty switch back to Penrite HPR Gas
Penrite oil are excellent and also use them in my cars

I picked up my trusty steed from the dealer today and after hours of interesting reading I have tried Penrite 15w - 50 Diesel. Feels good so far. Only done 20k's on it this evening. What a pain in the friggin posterior is the oil filter to get off. The last bloke over-tightened it to be-geezus :well. The Super-cheap filter remover barely got in the space and was pretty useless without a screwdriver in the right place levering it loose. Anyway another twenty minute job takes an hour. Using a RYCO Z436 filter. I was very satisfied with the HPR 10 Gas in my R1150RT Beemer. I love this ST. My eleven year old daughter gives it a double thumbs up as well. :thumbs I have some Valvoline 90 grade diff oil. The manual recommends 80. Could I use the 90 without creating problems?
:slvr13

A PM to Member "rocketeer" would be a good idea. He was our oil guru for a fair while. He hasn't been in here since June, but was always ready with good answers.
-
90 Grade wont hurt..
-
The 90 should be fine. I have used 75W-140 as I happened to have it, but it was full synthetic. As the ST uses so little you can change it as often as you feel like.

Go to a Honda motorbike dealer and buy a Honda filter and oil filter remover tool in a pack for about $35 I think
They are worth there weight in gold :thumb and a genuine Honda part :thumbs

I'm using Shell H5 Diesel oil :eek
As recommended by Diesel :grin (http://ozstoc.com/index.php?topic=3240.msg32874#msg32874 (http://ozstoc.com/index.php?topic=3240.msg32874#msg32874))

:o $35 from a Honda Dealer, genuine. Stee-ruth. I will need to get me one of them. Thanks to all for the valued replies. I'll give the Vavoline 90 a whirl in the final drive. 'You know what I mean" :thumb

Final Drive done.

As I have said in another thread:-
A good guide to what oil works for your bike, is that if the gear changes start to get clunky and harder to do after a few thousand Ks, then the oil isnt right for you. Currently, I'm using Penrite HPR 20W-60 extra ten Diesel. Its been in there about 6000Ks so far.
-
Just done my first oil change on the mighty ST, oil i use was PENRITE MC-4ST 4 STROKE 5W40 Full Synthetic PAO ESTER not cheap $60 for 4 lits, it's always held together well in my DL1000 so well i didn't change it over my last trip 12,000km.
:blk11
-
I have been using the Penrite 10/10ths 10W-40 the last few oil changes. It is a round $68 for 5 litres, but you can run it for the Honda change interval or longer, and it still feels great in terms of gear changes regardless of distance or being stinking hot. The MC-4ST is pretty similar in terms of the extra additives.
-
Hi all, I am going to change engine oil on the 1100, can you tell me the capacity with and without changing oil filter. and should I change the diff oil at the same time.
-
3.6 litres oil only, 3.7 litres oil and filter. If you don't know when the final drive oil was last changed may as well do it, as it takes very little oil. I do the final drive every few years, even though Honda does not give a change interval.

Every 36,000 kms or 3 years, which ever comes first........
Half way down below timing belt, same position under maintenance in my manual as well.

Alan is right, I was going off a photocopy of the maintenance schedule I keep in my bike log - seems like the last column is missing. I always change it it every 2 years or so anyway, with full synthetic.
-
Thanks guys, I also need to get hold of workshop manual, any ideas would be welcome :thumbs
-
there is a link to the manual of each model in the relevant sections. ie 1100 manual in the 1100 section.

Thank you all, very helpful :wht11

I'm just about to do my first oil and filter change on the ST1300 and have read how difficult a filter can be to remove. Reminds me tho of the last time I helped my son do an oil change on his car.
We couldn't find the Supercheap filter remover I use so I simply used a Phillips head screwdriver and stabbed the filter near the bottom, allowed the filter to drain, put the screwdriver all the way in and then levered it off. It was easier than using the remover.
I don't know yet whether the Honda filter can be accessed to do this tho. Will find out soon.
A Ryco Z436 filter with trade discount at Supercheap is $12.37 as at 2day.
-
Equivalent filter at Repco is about $8.00

You can get one of those "band" type removers around the ST1300 filter, but only have about 10o of movement. That's usually enough to break the seal unless some muscular type screwed it on too tightly.
The K&N filters have a 17mm nut forged into the top of them which is gold, but too easy to over-tighten.
There is room for the stab technique if you decide to go all Fred Flintstone on the job.
Be ready for the spurt of oil onto the left centre stand leg if you unscrew it without stabbing and draining first.

Well i did my first oil change on the ST yesterday, was a lot easier than i expected! Filter came off with out any hassles and even got the new one on with out a struggle. I used a pair of adjustable pliers.
I opted for the Ryco Z436 filter and Penrite 15w 50 Diesel oil (its a W.A. Summer ridden only bike, so i figured 50 or even 60 for the heat we experience over here), all up i had change from $50 :thumbs .
The only way i can describe the oil that came out is "YUCK" :eek . It was very thin ...... and BLACK !......... Within 2 minutes of changing it and starting up the bike, i could hear it was so much quieter than before, and the gear change is a little smoother i think as well.
I did check the Final drive, it was full, clean and still very viscus so i will hang off on that for now.
Brake and clutch are also good so no need to touch them either.
This leads me into my Question, what sort of radiator additive does everyone use, if any at all ??

I have recently put in nulon 10w-40 as I had some left over. Took a couple of weeks but the gear chage is now extremely quiet. Going to try shell h5 next but I think a good quality diesel oil is way to go. Have used it for years regardless of type of car or bike never had any problems
-
I have only used the Nulon red long life coolant that is already premixed. It lasts for years and comes out clean.

Same as above but concentrated.

Go to Honda and buy the Honda HP oil, comes in a kit with oil filter and sump plug washer... It is the oil that is used from the factory...

I use K&N 204 for ease of removal and ppenrite Everyday full synthetic 10-40. 6 litre. Watch for it on special at Supercheap

Castrol 4T 15-40 is what I use, 20-60 would be a bit heavy especially during winter months I think :think1

I use same brand but can only get the 15w-50 in Port Pirie - I'd better start looking at prices for the next oil change soon.

Shell Helix HX5 15W-40 on sale at SuperCheap Auto until Sunday- 5 litres for $16.49, limit 2.
Also Auto Glym and Maguiars cleaning kits under $50- a decent saving on the single items with a great divided bucket containing the Glym kit.
As mentioned before, as a member I know there will be a $5 credit for me in the next sale cycle. Besides, with a shanghai I can land a rock on their roof from here (not that I do that any more...) :whistle
-
Super Cheap Auto have a "big sale" on, and Gulf Western oil is being promoted. I'm trying the Gulf Western 10W 40 SYN-X 3000. It's on promo at $18.49 for 5 litres which you need for the ST13- 4 litres isn't enough. That company makes a huge range of products, most of them actually manufactured here in Australia- that's a good enough reason to give them your money. The reviews of their products look pretty good.
If there are any recently joined members who haven't given oil technology much thought, this deep analysis is highly recommended:

Seeing as how the latest 'oil' comment in the three threads linked above is 2019, I though that it might be time to open the subject again.
What is the 'good oil' for a 1300 with 155k and that tows occasionally?
-
Shell Helix HX5 Diesel Oil 15W-40 is still a great option and one a few guys have been using in their ST's for years :thumbsup
Gulf Western 10W 40 SYN-X 3000 is also a great one :thumbs
Or if you want to spend a bit more money for oil that has a motorcycle rating:
Penrite MC4ST

I've been using Penrite 10W-40 Full Synthetic for quite a few years now...
I know there are quite a few members running diesel & car based oil but I'd rather stick to something that's specifically designed for motorcycles and wet clutches, even if it does costs a little more...
-
I use the Penrite diesel oils 20W40 as in the previous threads. Its wet clutch fine. It meets or exceeds the required specs. The difference to the "Motorcycle Spec" oils is marginal, and you dont pay the premium price.
-
Hey Brock, did you mean 15W-40, or possibly 20W-60 as when I tried to look up 20W-40 there's nothing listed... :think1
https://penriteoil.com.au/products/viscosities/20W-40

Not sure Rusty I would need to check.
Checked back to the middle of the first page of this thread..
Penrite HPR 20W-60 extra ten Diesel.. Also using the Repco ROF135 oil filter.. much cheaper than Honda and works just as well.
-
Same here, run in temps from -5 to 45c, and my st13 just rolled over 100,000km. Valve clearances never needed changing, and no oil burnt between changes, same on last bike (GSXF750) 130,000km .

I went to buy the Shell Helix HX5 diesel oil (yellow container) and was told that it now contained friction modifiers - which are no good for our wet clutch set up. Can anyone verify this or did they just get $75 out of me for Penrite through good salesperson BS?
(HX5 was $52 for 5L now btw)
-
i thought that you were the resident expert on diesel?? :rofl

i thought that you were the resident expert on diesel?? :rofl
Ouch!

Hahaha! Once upon a time. I pioneered the use of diesel oils in ST1300s (to my knowledge) after discovering they have a very good 'crush' rating (which means what sort of diminishing Wyalong they suffer after being squashed between cogs, sprockets and high pressures). It also has to not have and friction modified in it to help out wet clutches not slip, and best of all... it used to be 1/3 the price of regular 4 strike motorcycle oils. :thumb

I did a search online and was unable to confirm whether HX5 oil contained friction modifiers.
But, from my limited understanding of oils, I think you need oils that meet the JASO MA or JASO MA2 standards which, I believe Shell's HX5 oil doesn't meet.
Re being charged $75, I'm assuming you ended up with Penrite's MC-4ST Semi Synthetic Motorcycle Oil from Supercheap???
If that's the case you got stooged as you can buy that very same oil for $64.99 from Autobarn: http://tinyurl.com/45dkj2ys (http://tinyurl.com/45dkj2ys)

-
The Penrite oil ( for diesel engines) that I mentioned earlier meets or exceeds the standards Rusty posted . My 1100 has been running on ti since I bought it with 35K on the clock, and still runs well today.. (well not today exactly, as i am in Thailand)
-
Hi Brock, unless I'm looking at the wrong oil, I'm not sure if it does meet those standards... :think1
https://penriteoil.com.au/assets/pis_pdfs/HPR%20DIESEL%2020W-60%20(Mineral).pdf
This one says it meets the Jaso CD-Plus standard, no mention of meeting Jaso MA or MA2...
But, at the end of the day if you've been using this oil for years, it can't be too bad! :thumbsup

You can search the oil company's lube desk by opening Google and searching for:

Only issue with that is they are only going to show the recommended oil for whatever vehicle you enter in...so no chance of them recommending diesel oils for a motorcycle...
