Fairing Edge Deflectors and Mirror deflectors
« on: May 27, 2012, 06:46:00 PM »
Time to make my pillion's ride a bit more comfortable and quiet.  When we did the 7,000km trip prior to Easter, the biggest issue for Catherine was the wind noise and buffeting.  The Starcom headset was delivering my intercom conversations okay, but she was struggling to hear her music from her iPhone (separate he MP3 in the Zumo 660).  The Earmould plugs helped a lot, but she is hesitant to move to the speakers inserted into the Earmoulds (which is what I have and found excellent).

At speed, when I move my arm and hand from the grips down to my thigh, the wind noise for Catherine drops significantly.  I'd seen the Honda Fairing Edge Deflectors and Mirror Deflectors many years ago, and decided this was worth a try.  Our north American brethren had been pleased enough with these extras, but not too many owners have them.  Here are a few of the threads on them:
http://www.st-owners.com/forums/showthread.php?12101
http://www.st-owners.com/forums/showthread.php?28277
http://www.st-owners.com/forums/showthread.php?32906
http://www.st-owners.com/forums/showthread.php?19170

So I ordered the two parts from RonAyers.com (email: parts@ronayers.com)  for these USD costs:

MIRROR DEFLECTOR SET, Ron Ayers SKU: 77566,  Mfg. Part Number: 08P72-MCS-100A  US$149.89
FAIRING DEFLCTOR SET,   Ron Ayers SKU: 77569,  Mfg. Part Number: 08P73-MCS-100A  US$179.96
+ $   65.00   Shipping USPS
$ 394.85   sub total
$ 15.80   Additional 4% handling for international
$  410.65   Total US dollars charged to my PayPal account

(I called a local Honda dealer for prices and delivery.  The response was these would have to come from Japan, so expect quite a wait, and I cannot recall the quote, but it was HUGE!)

Here's what they look like out of the two boxes:

Today I installed them.  It took less than a couple of hours and was not difficult at all.  The fit is not absolutely perfect, but pretty bloody good. I used a hot air gun to heat up the components to aid in setting (recommended).

I am looking forward to some additional Winter wind protection, but the real test will be the changes for the pillion.  I'll let you know after our trip to Coff's Harbour this coming weekend for Rock'n'Roll with the Ulysses Club there (and Wintersun Festival).

It will be interesting to hear Catherine's verdict after a suitable test ride. Marissa found that from the pillion perspective the standard ST1300 we had, had far less turbulence and buffeting than the GL1800 Goldwing we test rode at the Snowy ride in 2010. These can only make a good bike even better.

They look great, John.

It's interesting that you say the Goldwing has more buffeting, Barry. You would think that it would have more protection given its size.

Were you test riding a 2012? We found the found the new '12 great but being a bigger bike you're further from the screen. Riding with the screen up fully while touring it isn't a problem, Depends on your height/size and expectations between the two bikes.

My bike came new with the fairing deflectors already fitted.  :)
I do recall Pro Honda (Rocklea) at the time saying to me that they were surprised that all STs  didn't come with them already fitted.

I find them great, the top of my legs never really feel any wind at all and they also help to deflect heat from the engine for those who find this a problem. This isn't a problem for those of us in Tazzie but I'm sure they'd make riding in the Qld heat a lot more comfortable.............I haven't tried the mirror deflectors but they could be handy on the Apple Isle.

So tell me Couch, are you in Tassie?  So how is it you imply you bought the ST from Pro Honda (Brisbane?) and how lucky are you to sore a extra like that on a new bike?

Yes, I am in Tassie John, and I did buy the bike from Pro Honda in Rocklea, just over 2 years ago.

They had four 2008 model ST 1300PAs for sale with zero kls that had never been commissioned by the police. I purchased the last one from them for $18,650. The bike also came with Handle Bar Risers fitted as well. Other than the bike having police control switches on the right hand handle bar, you wouldn't pick the difference between the standard model. I've since added a Honda Top Box, Quartet Harness, OEM Heated Grips, Koako Throttle Lock, sheepskin seat covers, and a Fender Extender.

I had never even sat on the bike before climbing aboard and heading back home to Tassie. First ride on the bike was 2283kls all the way back to the Tasman Peninsula............and I was smiling all the way!!!! and still am!!!!  :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

I've about 22,000kls on it now.

Looking forward to your ride report John in relation to how your pillion finds them.  They look great....very well integrated!

Hi Chris,
The bike we test rode was a 2010 model, and the turbulence was only an issue for the pillion. Marissa felt it was worse than on the ST1300. From the riders perspective it was an awesome bike. The riders position had no turbulence at all.

If you get a chance to try the new model I'd be interested in what you think. My partner thought it was improved over the previous shape.

She never really complained about the ST - only if we were hit by strong crosswinds.

The deflector look great. I always wanted to fit them to mine and they'd have looked great on my black bike.

Though they are a sensational bike, the new shape of the latest wing just doesn't do it for me.
Marissa and I were over at Team Moto Springwood the other day and they had the new and run out model Wing side by side on the showroom floor in the same colour (Red).
It's only a personal preference thing, and plenty will disagree with me, but to my taste they got the styling of the new model all wrong. The front looks much the same, but the rear end looks like a Victory. It was a backward step in my opinion, but that's not taking anything away from the fact that they are a great motorcycle.
I'm sure one of these day I'll get one.

John, et al, Does the addition of these fairings and deflectors etc make any improvement on the much talked about Pan-Weave? I'd be interested to know whether the change in aerodynamics created by these things improves matters.

Pan-Weave............never experienced it..............maybe I've never been fast enough. I think I've read somewhere that it only comes in over about 120MPH, and I'm never likely to experience it if that's the case!! I have the fairing deflectors fitted and they're great......at least up to 100MPH anyway!! (not that I've been that fast of course)

Well we went on the run to Esk last weekend and the fairing edging seems to have done the trick - by diverting airflow further away from us, especially the pillion.  At 100 kph, there was significantly less wind noise around the pillion helmet, so the  pillion's microphone was picking up very little, almost no wind noise now.  At one point we got up to a much higher speed for a brief section  ::), and I asked Catherine what speed she thought we were doing, and she was surprised to hear the level as it did not seem like it with the new fairing edging in place, with less wind.

I also reckon I've suffered less of Brisbane winter temps commuting last week too, due to less breeze on me as I head up the Gateway motorway at 100 kph.

The only issue is that the double-sided tape on one strip high up on above the instrument panel gave way, but it stayed in place. Easy to fix.

They are still available and should have a similar result to the 1300's.

I have put them on my to do list but it's not written in stone yet. Mirror wind defelectors might come first but I'm wondering if they and the police light mounts could both be fitted.

I have the fairing deflectors, the mirror deflectors and the laminar EARS on mine. All work as you would expect.  If you are going to use the Honda police brackets you will need to cut a piece out of the Honda mirror deflectors to get them to fit, as they go all the way along the top of the mirror to the fairing.

You could have seen all these things if you went to Lightning Ridge Streak...
