So what are ppl using.....anything working better or worse than Honda pads ??

I use EBC pads that I get from a guy in the UK.

A full set for the 3 x calipers cost me $145, including postage. The rear pads are the thicker ones.
Dave is very helpful and he's a guru when it comes to ST's. Just tell him your bike details and he'll sort you out.

I just replaced the rear pads before Middleton with "Metal Gear" QLD.

I have been using the metal gear brand in the ST11, work well in all conditions and are relatively easy on the rotors comapred to the EBCs I was using before (like rotor replacement at 100,000kms, with metalgear rotors) The front pads are due for replacement at around the 90K mark I reckon, or next front tyre change. Rotors are still in great condition.

I went back to OEM pads because they were better than the aftermarket ones that a dealer fitted.
With the aftermarket set on the rear brake always seemed to be making a slight contact noise all the time. I put up with it for 30,000kms and went back to OEM from David Silver Spares for $75 for a full set 4 years ago (not sure on postage as I had other items as well) at 110,000kms. Not sure who Honda gets to do their pads but no complaints from me.

I have had bad expereinces with aftermarket products as they are generic and not matched in friction to the OEM rotor hardness. Although some can feel very grabby and effective they will degrade and wear down your rotors quickly, I know this from past experience.

How thick should rear OEM pads be when new?
I have a slight drag sound that's more noticeable when warm and the pistons seem to be out a bit too far so I expect pads may need changing soon. Last pads went in at 43000 by previous owner and now reads 58400. This seems a short pad life to what I'm getting on my other bike...but I don't know this guys riding style.
The rotor is fine.
I just had a looksee of an article by Mellow which has gone some way to answering part of my question :thumb

I don't know about the pad dimensions but even 43,000kms for pad wear compared to my 80,000kms OEM seems a bit much. Next set was aftermarket (dealer fitted) and I tossed in the bin after 30,000kms (always had minor noise on rear) and back to OEM which have now done 40,000 kms and still looked ok at last tyre change
Being in a country area 6 out of the last 7 years might explain the high km figures..........only get use the brakes when I go to the city.

A few pix of the worn out pads ("SBS Sintered RR Road"not Honda OEM)
These pads are 17,000 km old
fit by Honda dealer "Jeffrey, of Ferntree Gully" (currently in liquidation) as per prev owner's records.
These pads are likely to have another 2,500 km on them if I were to go down to "squeal time".
Typical of SBS and other non OEM pads, you get +/- 20,000 km.
Dissapointing, that a Honda dealer would NOT use OEM pads to increase proffit :whistle,
Yet another reason to stay away from them.
Also dissapointing I have to order :CB-- the pads from the UK and still comes out $50 cheaper incl shipping door to door...

Forgot to mention, stupid on behalf of Honda engineers :cuss, you will need to loosen the exhaust flange bolts (14mm x2pc) as well as remove (10mmx1pc) (and 14 mm 1 pc) retaining bolts to access the pad pin and caliper stay bolt. Dont forget to wire brush all threads clean, apply grease to pin and bolt pivot as well as locktite and torque to correct settings when reassembling. took me about 1 hour.
brake is rock solid now and whisper quite. :thumbs

Those pics show a similar degree of wear...yours maybe a bit thinner. I don't have that depth of striations though. I picked up on the cans issue straight up just looking the job over.
Frustrating cos I just want to go for another ride.

Well that was easy. Wheel out, pads out. Caliper cleaned. Pins cleaned and lubed and new pads in. Spline got a clean and lube too. All back together.
Sintered Pads.

Just so you know, it is possible to change pads without removing the wheels, but easier to clean caliper and pistons obviously without wheel.
Did you use 60% moly grease on the spline? My local Honda dealer couldnt order any in but some dealers will have supplies.
You can get the equivilant Suzuki Moly paste $12.00 tube at Suzuki dealers.
A small amount goes a long way, from experience, to much will spray out onto the sidewall of the tire and cleanup can be difficult. :'(

I wanted to get in and give the rear end a good clean and inspection...and have a bit of a learning experience. Getting to know the toy.
My lube collection had a small tube of 60% Moly Lube that fits the description. Very sticky and not prone to sprayout.( hows that for a word >:())
Spline looks in top condition. Brake pins had road grime and junk stopping everything working smoothly.
I've business in Inverell tomorrow Damn...I'll just have to take a bike....eni meeni.. :whistle red or white....
A run out past Copeton Dam, Pindari then south to home should be a good test.

I put GOLDfren pads on the front prior to Middleton in march - now have 17k on them & going well.
Recently changed the rear EBC's to Metalgear prior to Biloela.
Both sets of EBC's had plenty of meat left on them but looked to be cracked & chipped.
