Why do you ride a Motorcycle?
« on: March 14, 2012, 08:36:26 AM »
Why do you ride a Motorcycle? I thought in here it would be a good place to say why you get on two wheels, and disappear for hours, days, weeks at a time!

For me it is simple, I don't get to ride all that often due to work and young family, but to put that helmet on, quiet tunes in the background, and just take in the kilometers with no plan in general is almost perfect.

I can just block out the rest of the world, concentrate on the road ahead, and clear my head.

Cheers

If you have to ask, then you have no business anywhere near a motorbike...

Not sure if I can actually select a voting option so rebelling option seems the best re fuel prices

Mainly due to rising fuel costs from commuting which led me to the CX500.

Then  :bl11 because of her touring capabilties and she looked better than the new (2006) BMW R1200RT and a used K1200LT (I liked the colour mauve/purple???)which I also looked at.

I must say this is the answer I was thinking when I read the topic of the thread.

As has been said on FarRiders several times - if I have to explain you'll never understand.

It isn't just one thing for me, but one of the simplest answers is:

BECAUSE I CAN  :nahnah :rofl :runyay :runyay :runyay

Got my Bike Licence in 74 I had always wanted a bike I was 28 before i got a car licence I did not have a car. Just the missus was due with our first & said you better get a licence so you can drive me to the hospital in hers.
I've always had a bike since & while I can I will, don't ride as much as I used to or want to but the bike clears the head that's for sure.
No real reason just that I am a motorcyclist like my father before me It's in my blood

Interesting route through the licensing maze.
I got mine for personal transport when I went to Uni.  A thumping great Suzuki 80   :eek
My lust bike was a Honda CB250!   :-++
I was given a ride on a mate's Triumph 650 and felt like I was the washing clinging to the clothesline in a gale.   :crazy
Funny things we do.  We've all got bike stories.  And love telling them.
Maybe we should have a "I remember when..." thread.   :)   :popcorn
For the modern man who lives in the city, riding a bike might be one of the only ways to escape the humdrum monotony. To take off and ride. To be both at one with nature and one with the bike. To feel masculine. Adam Piggott

....an escape from reality- for hours at a time whether just wandering off for a cruise or pushing it harder around the track there is no thought other than what is in front of you at that time.

Well, if I didn't ride it I'd have to use it as a book-end and seeing as I've only got one bike, all the books would fall over.  :crazy

Silly question !  :think1

My answer would have to agree with what both Brock and Tack said.
Add to that, 'cause I just love riding.

Every chance I get, whether its to work, wet or dry makes no difference, long run or short, just up to the shops or to go visiting mates.

What I can't understand about a lot of owners/riders is why they have a bike and don't/wont take it out in case it gets dirty, gets wet or if its too windy or too hot/too cold, or it's too far/not far enough.

You either love it or it's a status symbol.

Rant over, back to normal now :)

:dred11 In my younger days, only had one thought on my mind 300+ . the need for speed and riding as fast as your poor bike could go for extended periods calmed the monster inside ... i loved it . this is how i eode from 17 till i was 42 , never in my wildest dream i would have picked up a sports / tourer .
Time out of the saddle and changing ideas on what riding meant for me , brought me to my 95 st .With out a shadow of a doubt i get more enjoyment doing the speed limit + a smidgeon on my big Honda .
I cant stop riding it and when im not i wish i was . Big heavy , solid bike which is no speed demon makes me forget everything i shouldn't be dwelling on , made my life complete again . :thumbs

I was a relatively latecomer to motorcycles.  In my youth I cycled, pushed wheelbarrows and walked pretty much everywhere.  That came to an end when I moved to Cairns and the heat sapped all the energy out of me by the time I got to the letter box.  I'd always lived close to work or had a company vehicle up until I came to Adelaide.  I bought a motorcycle for the commute and then when I said I wanted to do the Great Ocean Road the wife said go for it, so I booked it before she changed her mind.  From that point on I started going everywhere and the journeys getting longer.  These days it is more than a commute and more a way of life.

I needed to get to uni, it was cheap & my dad & brother-in-law had been riding.  Rebuilt the engine on one bike,  introduced then girlfriend to riding, she got her license.  We continued to ride on & off for years, married had kids, got back into it. Still riding, now much more for enjoyment than commute.

Why do I ride:
1. because I can.
2. I like the solitude.
3. Damn sight cheaper from point A to B than my 4wd, which consumes fuel between 15-18l/100km at about $2.00/l while the bike is about 6l/100km.
