I have a small steam engine that my late father-in-law built from scratch. He finished the engine and partly finished the boiler before he passed away.

Note for stinkypete. I don't know how much you know about what you have. That boiler could be fired on anything. From a blow torch through all burners and wood and coal. It even has a superheater.

I really have no idea what I have, but at some stage I would love to have it finished and running, as tribute to the old fella.

Hi Bill That rod will ultimately drive a water pump to force water into the boiler against the boiler pressure of 100 psi when the train is travelling. A steam injector will do the same job when stationary. They are a very interesting gizmo as they use boiler pressure to force water into the boiler against boiler pressure by exchanging pressure for velocity. Look them up on google you will find the methodology very interesting.

Hi Allan yes the front "truck" will be driven as well. I was just celebrating the moment drive had reached at least one set of wheels.

There were four of these beasts in Standard gauge imported to NSW to haul shale oil from Newnes in the Wolgan Valley to the western mainline at Clarence. Hence my interest in them.

Here's a couple of Shays taken at Wolgan that I got off of dad. He used to work for NSW rail as a fireman before we moved to SA a little before 1960. Also have a few taken at Newnes

Yep its keeping the door shut. That problem has since been fixed. The Track is the "Hornsby Society of Model Engineers" track at Galston in Sydney. I am currently a member of that club as well as my home club in Mudgee as we don't have a boiler inspector in Mudgee.

Well I guess miniature is a bit of a misnomer but what do you call it? It weighs abt 320 kgs.
