Title: FarRide #32 Walcha 8 November 2014
Post by: saaz on September 18, 2014, 09:09:45 PM
A FarRide is on to Walcha, so some of us could meet up there or go somewhere else in the area either on the Saturday or Sunday. I have not planned any particular route or time as yet. The Queensland Esk RTE looks a bit out of reach though (same day) which is a pity. Nothing like those 2 states in a weekend RTEs!

No need to do a FarRide to go along either.

Destination :
Place : Walcha, NSW - 26e Fitzroy Street, Walcha NSW
Date : Saturday, 08 November 2014
Time : 11:30am to 12:00pm AEDT   This is the time to get there, aim for 11:30am.
GPS: -30.985152,151.592133

Was considering this one, but at this stage it llooks like I'm off to PNG for the two weeks leading up to the 8th and possibly only getting back late on the 7th.

Good circuit.  Just don't get caught riding from Bendemeer to Walcha in the early morning.  I did that once going to Nambucca and the sun sits right in your eyes the whole way.  Probably different in November than February and certainly not an issue after 10:00.

I just got home this afternoon from Urunga going the longer way. 2500kms to do a 1000km FarRide  :think1

But I did a few roads that I always try and fit into trips around Walcha.  Basically Canberra to Narrabri, which is not that interesting, then on to Walcha through Gunnedah, Willow Tree and Tamworth, some of the roads I have not been on as have not been where I have been going. Then from Walcha to Guyra, after which it was a bit more fun. Down the Waterfall Way through Dorrigo to Urunga for the night.  Sunday it was time to go the coast a bit and go on the Oxley back to Walcha just for something different. Then on Thunderbolts and the back way through Dungog to Denman for the night. They sure must like their coal down that way, as they must put it on the road and pour lumpy bitumen over it. Temperature jumped from 27c to 37c coming off the ranges into the valley before Glouchester. The Bylong Valley way was next, road conditions and scenery vary a lot so wise to keep the concentration up. As I was close, Bathurst via Sofala was next, with a little trundle around the track yet again. From there back through Tuena, Crookwell, Gundaroo. There is only 8kms of reasonable gravel on the Tuena end of that road, in a 5km, 3km and 1km stetches. The 5 km one is before Tuena up on the ridge of the hills, a bit narrow and windy with lots of fresh dead wildlife, but quite manageable keeping to 60kph or so.

Overall great weather. The only encounter with live wildlife (quite a few cows on the roads but they don't count) was a (now deceased) cockatoo who was slow to take off and went the wrong direction. I can say the Trophy bodywork is strong as the cockie was finished off painlessly (I hope that is what it was thinking) The metal bracket for the rear hugger fatigued through and the hugger went missing (an aftermarket one) so the roads must have been too much for it over 40,000kms. Bike now needs a clean and new tyres.
