Title: Timing Belt for ST1100
Post by: Brock on December 16, 2012, 10:22:47 AM
Dont pay $$$$$ for your timing belt, A Gates T325 from Amazon is about A$37.00 .  (Get in quick, There is one left, I just ordered the other)

Apparently, Gates are OEM suppliers of many belts, and are of an excellent quality

Have had to replaced 2 timing belts on 1100's over the years and used OEM replacements on both occasions based on my rule of thirds...that is l figure if l undertake to do the work myself l will save two thirds of the total cost of replacing an ST1100 timing belt...the other third being the cost of the belt itself :)

Also the first 1100 belt l replaced had been VERY hard with it's first owner knocking up 150,000km in just 24 months...though this belt showed no visible signs of any damage it had however stretched 12-15mm more than the second 1100 belt l replaced on the bike l have owned since new. The point l am making is that l dont think the first belt could have broken if l had let it go a little longer...but this lenght could contribute to it 'jumping' a tooth :( I believe also the added would've caused the belt to FLAIL excessively between the 'driver' cam hear and the 'driven' (left), cam gear which has eventually given this engine noticably added engine rattles when not under load.

The point being that Honda state that the Honda ST1100 timing belt should be inspected at 100,000km AND if worn (excess stretch is worn), then the belt should be replaced then! So, how well do YOU know your bike?

A couple of tips if you plan on doing the replacement yourself...though not entirely necessary, remove both the front wheel and the front stanchions...2 advantages here, firstly it gives you more work room and secondly when returning the stanchions you can rotate them either 90 or 180 degrees so that the thrust side is given relief and thus decreasing the likelihood of seal leaks.

Secondly, it's been reported on some forums that you need to cut / Dremel a part of the plastic timing belt cover away in order to return it...this is complete rubbish...JUST take note in how you removed it!

Lastly, l used the OEM workshop (PDF), manual as my guide verbatim, particularly in relation to re-setting the belt tensioner.

Ciao, the can :)

I did mine at 150k and got the gates belt through my parts friends in Victoria Point for about $45 au
I Just gave them the # and 3 days later yippee.. o:)
Fitted it myself,
It made quite a difference to the sound and performance of the bike due to that stretching problem,
now if I could just stop the tummy stretching ,,, >:() :whistle :whistle :whistle :whistle

I have changed a couple of timing belts on the ST11.  Even one that was well over the change distance looked ok, just a bit stiffer than the replacement one.  There is a fair safety margin with the advised replacement period.  Interesting that no time period is given.

Changed the oil today after a run with local club and while I had the maintaince cover off to refill the oil decided the check tension of timing belt. Found it a bit loose as I suspected as the noises from front of engine have been getting a little louder over past 12 months.   :o  The book says that all plastic and radiator have to be removed to get to tensioner, but all I did was to remove the silver cover on front of right head, undo three bolts to remove the black plastic cover, loosen bolt at top of cover and one on front of head so can get large screwdriver in to push cover apart enough to get a 14mm ring spanner onto adjuster bolt to loosen and then tighten again when belt tight, and reassemble. It is a bit fiddly and patience is needed as some bolts are one flat at a time to turn, but only took me 20 minutes. Much better than as the book says.  :thumbsup

I've just replaced my timing belt after 150k and found a couple of issues, the bottom pulley needs to come of to remove the cover as it won't tip far forward with motor in the frame. I got the new belt back on and when I rotated it the recommended four times the belt came of the bottom pulley and rode up over the retaining plate, bugger. Next attempt got it on and did the four rotations and all was good the timing marks were spot on and the motor fired up first time.
Only issue I now have is I want to replace the radiator hoses but the bottom one is behind the frame bracket and I cannot get a screw drive in to undo it, might have to get the dremmel out and cut the bugger :cuss. Hoping have it all back together tomorrow.
