Wheel Bearings

Well I got my new tyres, new cush rubbers and inserts, 2 new o-rings and now it seems I need wheel bearings in the rear wheel.
Has anyone done their wheel bearings? How the hell do I get them out for a start? I believe the bearings are a standard size but the bearing number on the RHS bearing doesn't seem to match anything I can find. Is there a cross reference or has anyone been able to source the correct bearings from a bearing shop.

The bearings are a very common 6204, on the brake side is a seal, may have to be OEM at a guess, this sits outside the bearing so replacement would be advised.

There apears to be two bearing types, 5204 x2 or a 5204-RS double bearing that replaces the need for fitting two 5204s  (these part Nos may be wrong

I checked out the video just a while ago and it looks like he uses a special tool. I reckon it's off to Honda with the wheel tomorrow morning and get the bearings removed professionally. I'll check out whether Honda have the bearings in stock, if they do they can put the new ones in. I'm a bit over running all over town at the moment. Hopefully I'll actually get the bike on the road by next weekend... man am I hanging out for a ride!!!

When I did the bearings on my ZZR, the inner race fell out, leaving the outer stuck in the seat with no way to get it out.   6Hrs with a dremel later, it was out, my boss wasnt happy about me using work time to do the job. Took 10 min to fit the new ones..

Brock, the x2, RS,ZZ etc are all diferent manufacturers labels for enclosed bearings, bearings on my old wheel, still fitted are 6204ZZ, it is almost impossible in this day and age to buy a bearing which is not enclosed, hence I left that off. I don't know where 5204 comes from.

On my rear wheel: RHS bearing 6204UU, LHS bearing TM-5204LUV4.

I do apologise Brock, look like we were both correct, the bearing on my drive side has been inserted the wrong way round so unable to verify the number and so I presumed both the same bearing.

Mornin' Bikerbear et al...

Just a couple of thoughts on bearings.

1) Not all bearing are the same quality. IE the materials (metals), used and the quality of 'build' are vastly different. If your NOT sure what your getting, get OEM ( genuine).

2) The spacer tube that 'spacers' the bearings can easily be 'tilted' so that the inner race of the bearing can be reached with the BEST quality 30cm drift (punch), you can buy.

3) NEVER re-use a bearing a bearing that has been removed by knocking them with a drift.

4) ONLY knock (hammer), in the new bearing by hitting its OUTER race only. The bearing can be inserted either side up, doesn't matter as the rollers are not tapered.

Basically I'm just getting the Honda shop to knock the bearings out now, they didn't have the bearings in stock. My local Allied Bearings shop is getting the bearings and seal I need, he had the double race bearing (5204-2RS) but it was a Chinese one and he advised against using it in the bike and has ordered a quality Japanese bearing for me, he has the single race bearing (6204DU) in stock in a quality bearing.

I've done wheel bearings before but I had access to more tools then. I did see a bearing removal kit at the shop for about $230 and was tempted to buy it, having 4 bikes at home means I'm likely to replace a few bearings in the future and also it would be available for mates to use as well.

Just for reference:

Both front wheel bearings are:

• 6204  (I don't think the DU or UU or whatever means a lot as long as they are sealed both sides)

Rear bearings are:

• 6204 with whatever extension the maker puts on.

• 5204 -2RS (not sure if the extension is necessary but it's a good starting point)

All the wheel seals- 2 x front, (even the large one that goes around the speedo drive, the guy behind the counter said- oh.. motorcycle , unlikely to have something like that - but he found one anyhow) and 1 x rear were readily available from the bearing shop. The smaller front seal that came out had 47.2 diameter on it but I got a 47 and it went in okay without any slop so I don't think it will be a problem.

I got KOYO (Japanese)6204 bearings for less that $10 ea and a FAG 5204 bearing which was more expensive (don't have the price I threw the docket out). The guy at the bearing shop said it was a lot more expensive than the Chinese one he had , but you pay for quality.
