Still pics with the "Ghost"
« on: September 04, 2013, 06:34:12 PM »
I thought I'd try out the quality of still pics using the Drift Ghost while out yesterday. I had it mounted to the front of the bike, above the headlight, with a suction cup. I've actually had the suction cup mounted there for the past few months and it hasn't even looked like loosening. I had the Camera mounted to it for yesterdays little run, 450kls, and it still feels very secure. I'm kicking myself actually, I turned the camera on when we left home and started taking a few pics now and again, but after a few hours the battery ran out as I hadn't had it connected up to bike power. That meant I missed out on taking the best pics ever, that being the road south of Swansea. You would have had to have seen it yesterday to believe it, it was magnificent!!  There was no wind whatsoever so the sea water that runs along beside the roadside was like a mill pond, and the reflection of the blue sky on the water was superb!...........bugger!!..........next time I'm up there I'll make sure the Camera's connected to power!!   Anyway I'll post a couple of the shots I took! :grin

O'by the way, I'm very impressed with the quality of the Drift Ghost. :grin

They are great Couch, is the video as clear? Does being plugged into the power cause any interference?
Cheers

Mate, the video is every bit as sharp and just as clear! I'm very impressed with the clarity and colour reproduction of the Camera. Needless to say all the pics were taken at varying speeds, the last shot was taken at 120kph. I haven't tried using the bike power as yet but I venture to say that it shouldn't make the slightest difference.
I'll keep you informed down the track Tony. I'll also post a sample of the video a little later.

Attached below is one shot taken directly into the sun to see how it would go! :grin

Hi Sean,  You're dead set right mate, some people do have all the luck. Tasmania is Australia's secret!! I really had no idea how beautiful the place is until I came here to live five and half years ago (ex banana bender). And we have some of, if not all, (ha) the best motorcycling roads in Australia!! :grin

Stay tuned mate and tomorrow I'll post a couple of photos of the area here on the Tasman Peninsula where I live with my family, that will blow your mind with envy!  :grin

Don't get me started on Tassie's roads!  One week last October last year was nowhere near enough.  I did 1946 kays, clockwise from Devonport and can't recall seeing a pothole or off-camber corner.
You're right about the camera.  The flare in the lens is minimal for an into-sun shot.  The colour and definition is excellent.
For the modern man who lives in the city, riding a bike might be one of the only ways to escape the humdrum monotony. To take off and ride. To be both at one with nature and one with the bike. To feel masculine. Adam Piggott

You mean to say you were here in Tassie last October, and we didn't catch up!! :spank

We had the pleasure of the company of Diesel and his lovely Mrs Diesel for a nights stay some time back, and Vicki and I (and my boys) really enjoyed their company!

Noice Couch - you certainly are in a great part of the country. I have my mount-point under the headlight. You get a little bit of shake going when in video mode, but great for stills. It's also concealed somewhat - black camera inside black faring and no one knows it's there.

I've also recently bought one of these Gorillapods from BigW for stills that are "off bike" ($39). I was originally trying to find a way to get the Drift mounted inside the windshield so I could take a "selfie". Then I found this - it wraps around the handlebars easily and is quite stable, and takes very little space when not in use on the bike. I'll post some piccies up as part of my review too - but I can thoroughly recommend getting one of these.

I was part of the post-AGM ride with other CMAers.  We'd overnighted in Swansea and visited Port Arthur enroute to our Hobart overnight, so you can see we were keeping moving.  I did see the Nubeena turn-off on the way to Hobart and thought of you but I wasn't losing the ride leader for quids since he knew where we were staying in the city.   :'(

I was originally trying to find a way to get the Drift mounted inside the windshield.

I mounted my Drift x170 on a mount off the bolts for the clutch reservoir by using this mount
http://www.saeng.com/dproduct.php?id=702&category=59
The camera sits perfectly still and looks above the dash thru the screen. This keeps the camera protected from bugs and rain. I had found it difficult to source a mount to secure to the dash and I was going to look at getting a dash shelf, but this mount solved the issue. The Drift x170 simply screws on and off easily within secs for when you want to secure it away.
Great quality product :thumb

RAM puts out a mount that is similar in the idea of bolting on to the reservvoir and the using an extension arm a base plate with a camera screw can be added. I use this system when I travel on long trips. The only problem with both set ups is to make sure that the screen arm on the ST13 does not obscure the good view. The RAM mount should cost about $50 from Johnny Appleseed.

Just a suggestion.

I can understand that mate! If you had continued on from Port Arthur for another 8kls then you would have run right in to Nubeena.  Maybe next time, hey!, :grin

Tony is this where you got your extra mirrors from ?

They stick ons then not clip ons ?

Gav  - They stick to the inside of your screen and another part sticks to the outside of your screen for extra grip

Tasmania is said to have the best motorcycling roads in Oz, and I can vouch for the fact that many of the roads I've ridden here are fantastic. Not only are they full of twisties, but generally speaking there is very little traffic on them, particularly on minor country roads. For instance on the Lake Leake Road we rode just a couple of days ago, from Campbelltown to Swansea, said to be the best m/c road in Tassie, and a distance of 68kls, only two vehicles passed us coming in the opposite direction, and one motorbike actually passed us, obviously he was in more of a hurry than we were! But there's only one way to find out..........ya just gotta come here mate!! :grin
