Possible Andamooka Ride 7th May 2016
« on: August 17, 2015, 05:23:56 PM »
Heather and I looking at possibly riding up to Andamooka for an overnight stop sometime in the near future. Perhaps the first weekend in December before it gets to hot.

As it's only 400 km from home we have most of the day to get there so a stop off at Woomera to look at the old rocket display and maybe lunch as well. There is some accommodation at Andamooka but we'll be camping in the local camp ground (about $3.00 a night) which only has toilets at the moment. We'll more than likely take our own food/stove etc. so we won't have worry about finding a place to eat.

On the way back a side trip into Roxby Downs for an hour or two before heading back home.

Anyone else that wants to get out of their comfort zone are quite welcome to come if this goes ahead.

A Picture says it all.......

It looks like a new road as you can see some of the old dirt road on google maps.

It has been bitumen all the way to Andamooka since approx 09/10. It literally stops at the far side of the main st of Andamooka and all the streets around the town ( town is not an accurate description) are dirt. The Pub used to do Monster Schnitzels.  :like

Due to having some issue with my lower back I thought it wise to put this trip on hold until a later date.

I rode from Woomera thru Roxby Downs to Andamooka back in 2008 and it was all bitumen then, the town roads were still dirt but no problem. Had a beer and pub meal at the Andamooka Pub.

I'd be up for another ride out there Alan . . Sometime in 2016?

Andamooka Ride - 7th/8th May 2016
« Reply #6 on: March 19, 2016, 02:12:23 PM »
Time to get this one up and running.

With nothing happening with Ozstoc in SA during May I thought it apt to re-activate our deferred planned ride to Andamooka.

We've put the weekend of the 7th and 8th of May on our calendar for this and Heather pointed out that the 8th is Mother's Day. That being the case we'll stop off at the Roxby Tavern for lunch on the way home on Sunday http://roxbydownstavern.com/ and will no doubt need to book for that day.

We're still staying the night in Andamooka at the caravan park for the massive sum of $3 a night per person plus $2 for a 10 minute shower. We'll be fixing something up to eat in the park which is our normal thing to do rather than at one of the dining places.

http://andamooka.sa.au/caravan-park/

Our plan is to leave home on the Saturday morning about 8am, top the tank at Port Augusta (also visit supermarket) and then aim for Woomera for about lunch time and look at the missile park. http://www.aviationmuseum.eu/World/Oceania/Australia/Woomera/Aircraft_and_Missile_Park.htm. Next planned stop is the BP at Roxby Downs for fuel and then off to Andamooka.

Looks like the weather might be a little wet for us plus head wind going there but tail wind coming back.

Ride deferred until another date due to the weather forecast we decided not to go. Just as well as they recorded 19 mm of rain at Andamooka.
