Home Hill was originally part of the Inkerman Downs Cattle Station.

The cattle station was converted to sugar cane in 1911 and the town developed quite quickly after the establishment of the Inkerman sugar mill in 1914. This inevitably attracted workers and sugar cane farmers to the area and a small centre grew up to provide the necessary goods and services.

The town was originally going to be named Holme Hill after a battle in the Crimean War. However, the signwriter wasn't given a written spelling of the name and made an error when creating the sign that inevitably read "Welcome to Home Hill". There is an alternative version of this story which says that the town was named after a certain Colonel Holme who had distinguished himself in the Crimean War. Either way, the signwriter made the mistake. Another mystery about the town name - the town is not built on a hill. It is on a fairly flat river delta. The nearest hill is about 10 km away.

That's because I have only just gotten home from work and didn't know about the blippin thread. :||||

I also have a few outsiders that are coming along. We may have to wait a little after 7am but we are flexible here in the North.  Doesn't matter what make or model - invite a few along if you want.

OK for those thinking about attending the ride starts at the BP servo (A Mate didn't know the Walkabout, so BP was easier)  Head south along Bruce until Haughton River.  Turn west and ride towards Clare before returning to Home Hill / Ayr for Breakfast before returning to Townsville via whatever route you choose.

By the way Sabie you are now organising the next one seeing as how you nominated me as organiser for this one. :rofl

Congratulations to Tackleberry ,
you got the day right with the weather on Sunday , because it stormy on the next morning it would not be enjoyable . It turned out the great 1st RTE to go on , good weather , good food and good company. It turn out to be the longest ride Kim & I have done for a little while , 317 klms on the ride and home ( half a tank fuel ) plus 50klms from home to BP Cluden to start where be got fuel to start the ride.  We look forward to the next one but the weather is warming up now.

Try riding with one of those jackets on every time you walk out the door in this weather.  I actually thought it was rather pleasant - cut down screen and all.
