Whilst there have been plenty of emails and 'phone call between Swann and me, there is no agreed settlement arrangement as yet.
But the longer this goes on, the more and more it seems that the Mighty ST1300 will be a write-off.
With this in mind, what is it replaced with? The most obvious is another ST1300, a number out there, various years, km and condition, and of course, various prices - to get something equivalent it seems that I need to look in the $9000 to $12,000 range.
Mmmmmmm, what else is there for those $$? Open to advice, comments, feedback and / or suggestions.
(If voting, provide some justification for your vote, please.)
(And, if nominating BMW or Goldwing, which model?)

Do you intend to keep towing a trailer (or the option to tow a trailer)?
Are you looking to downsize at all (thinking weight here)?
Do you anticipate any significant unsealed road travelling (not "off road" stuff)?
I've never quite understood why the Yamaha FJR 1300 (with bar risers) hasn't been considered much when looking for an ST1300 replacement.
I'm currently agonizing over whether to replace the ST with an RE Himalayan to compliment the V-Strom - for weight and cost of servicing reasons only.

Good points Mark, so ...
Trailer? Yes, there's a coupla more motorcycle camping trips left in me over the next year or two.
Downsizing? That's been a thought as that day will come at some stage.
Unsealed roads? No, only if it's the final km or so to a destination, and if the road is suitable.
The FJR300? Yes, that has surprised me too. It was a road report (Australian Road Rider early 2013) that was the catalyst for my ST300 purchase. Paraphrasing of what I remember from the report, the new 2013 FJ13 was head & shoulders above the 1400GTR and ST1300. But as the ST1300 was around $10k (coulda even been more) than the ST1300, the ST was the buy.
Good luck with your agonising. Personally, if I had a Strom 650?), I'd keep the ST.

I voted ST1300, of course, but with my own reasons: By now I know them well and have the bits that go with them. To go Yammie or Beemer I'd be starting all over again. It's hard to beat the 29 litre tank and smooth V4. Previous owners tend to have looked after them well. There's not much else as good that you can get for $10K. Modest km ones are still to be found, but are often black which I don't like. There's not many red BMW RT12s on offer. ;-*

If you have the money the new Goldwing Tour is a winner :thumbsup
Otherwise another ST would be good, there is a few good ones around like this one:

- 29 litre tank - yes a mighty touring range, although some what a moot point when you're touring with BMW, Moto Guzzi, in fact most other bike riders.
- There's not much else as good that you can get for $10K - yes, but is there an alternative? Maybe I look out of the box.
- Silky smooth V4, but so is the Goldwing Flat 6
- Modest km ones are still to be found. Yes, a very low km, later model has disappeared from my Bike Sales search, it seems that you need to be quick or miss the boat.

Goldwing Tour, very nice, but more than I want to spend.
ST1300 on link, also very nice, but a bit pricey (and ad another $500? to get it to Melb.) for the km and without a genuine top box.

I have been looking at replacing my ST and the Trophy because of their weight. Seriously looking at a CFMoto.

When I rode Saaz's Triumph Trophy SE from Derby to Perth, two 1200 km days, I was really impressed. If you find one have a look. Longer range than the ST (not that I would use that much, the legs need to move well before 500kms plus) all the fruit including power outlets on the bike and in the top box. I fell in love with Goldwings when I did a lap around on Australia on my GL1500. If you are thinking of doing some kms Henry's Final Drive transforms a 2001 to 2017 GL1800 by lowering rpm from 3,000 to 2,500 at 110kph. If thinking Goldwing 2001 to 2011 are made in USA 2012 onwards in Japan.
-
When I went to the Ulysses AGM in Maryborough a few years ago now. I test rode the newly released Triumph Trophy which was great to ride but I ended up going and purchase my 2011 second ST1300 but mainly because Honda had reduced the price to $18,000 while the Trophy was going to be $26,000

I voted for another ST...
Hey Michael, if you can catch Lawrence on a good day and he's in the right frame of mind, you may be able to buy his ST!
He does chop and change about selling it so if he knocks you back one day, try asking again the following day! :whistle :rofl
I reckon you'd struggle to find a cleaner & more well-maintained example... :thumb

Lawrence's ST300 is a very clean and tidy unit, but it's an earlier model than I would like. May be an irrational thought on my behalf, but it would seem like a backward step to me.

Yes, very close in most respects to mine. Basically, probably the closest I've seen. I've had a chat to the seller, trying to organise an inspection, would like insurance settled beforehand. [/list]

My first ride on an ST1300 was also at the Ulysses AGM at Maryborough in March (?) 2013. At the time (as I recall) they were $24,590 plus on-road costs. Maybe the $18,000 was an AGM special, perhaps that was a bit later. My procrastination paid off, as Honda discounted them to $15.990, plus on-roads in August 2013 - although the top box and heated grips were around $1000 extra.
I felt sorry for the $25k buyers, and whilst the ST13 is a great bike, not sure about the value at those $$. The $18k and $15k buyers, were very happy.
Come to think of it, Honda were gunna have a lot of problems with the ST at $25k, as Honda had just released the Goldwing F6B, a stripped-down full Goldwing, at $25k. On the current list to check, inspect, test ride is a 2013 Goldwing F6B, ~65,000km for ~ $12,500 - I could be tempted.

I paid $23,490 including top box, on road costs and 12 months rego in Oct 2008 for my new ST1300.
Thanks for feeling sorry for me Michael. :thumb

I guess in some ways, yes...but then it's only got 40,000 odd clicks on the clock and you'd be saving a fair stash of cash.
And, in a few more years you can put it on club rego! :grin

With my ST1300 being at the centre of a dispute with the insurance company, I think you may have got the last laugh though.

I saw an ad for a newone in 05 and it was for……….$28000
Which to buy? We have a small group at the mensshed with various bikes and it depends on what sort of riding you do mostly.
Long distance which I dont do too much of now, I would have an ST. They are still very good value for money.

3rd last stage of getting the Mighty ST1300 back on the road complete, RWC issued this AM.
2nd last stage, VIV inspection / certificate, next Monday.
Last stage, visit to VicRoads and registration, on or before 7 March. This will then complete and almost 12 month process since the ORF on 9 March 2023.
Then to decide, which do I keep? On the surface there's very little difference, both Honda ST1300 (d'oh!), both black, both 2011; my original ST has 74,000km on the clock, the replacement 59,000km. Despite 15,000km extra km, the original feels "tighter", clutch and brakes a little "sharper", it's mine since new (so perhaps I'm a little biased), overall it probably a nicer ST1300. Yeah, I'll keep it, and put the replacement ST1300 on the market.
Can anyone spot the differences? Most are obvious, some others are subtle.

Some differences won't be picked - they're under the skin.

.... 2nd last stage, VIV inspection / certificate, next Monday.
Well that didn't go as well as intended.
The feedback is that the repair is AOK, it's some of the paperwork and photos that need to be tidied-up. It looks like registration will be delayed a week.
Whiskey Tango Foxtrot!!!
Foxtrot Mike Delta!!!
Damn! Hell!! Poop!!!

Looking at the pics..... don't lament the DoT's/Insurer's final decision too much. They both look superb!
It's like asking yourself about Caviar.... Beluga or Osetra!

Gotta keep the paper-shufflers happy!
You got the repairs right, so they have to fail you on something. Can't have you pass it first go.

You sound like an old hand at this caper.
There was a young guy waiting at the VIV inspectors workshop shop front whilst I was there. He had the 1st VIV inspection on his Hyundai i30N (a pocket rocket) in February 2022.

You sound like an old hand at this caper.
The only time I have had anything of mine over the pits was an American import 1200 Goldwing, and it passed first time.
It was a country inspection station though, and the inspector was more interested in talking about it than finding things to pull me up on.
And being country, he is a local and runs the risk of meeting his customers in the pub, so he can't be too much of an arse.

Finally, the original ST1300 is re-registered. Damn, I'll have to pay tolls on East Link now.

Getting a VIV certificate is more arduous than and is an addition to both the RWC and VicRoads inspection. The VIV (Vehicle Identification Validation) is an additional process for vehicles on the repairable write-off register, this is mainly to avoid vehicle re-birthing, which in the old days was pretty prevalent. I suspect it has been successful in preventing re-births, although there's no doubt in my mind that truly professional, crooked repairers would still succeed.
Anyways, to get a VIV an engineer's report is required on the structural integrity of the frame (is was a write-off after all - $600), documented (description and pics) evidence of the repair process, receipts for all replacement parts (new or old).
The VIV inspector knocked me back 1st time ($550) because there were some pics missing (these were of the RH fairing and top box being sprayed), and because I had copies (Whiskey Tango Foxtrot!!!) of receipts, not originals. The 2nd VIV inspection ($110) was successful.
The VIV inspector - only three VicRoads' authorised motorcycle VIV inspectors in Victoria. For a State of nearly 7 million, WTF! Although, I suppose us Victorians should be grateful, there are none in NSW (10 million), as NSW does not have repairable write-offs. Not sure what the situation is with other States and Territories.
