Title: Seeking some help, and have a proposition!
Post by: SteveR on April 21, 2023, 10:40:50 PM
Hi all,

I posted recently about us relocating to NZ, one of the biggest stressors have been trying to off-load the larger items we’re not taking with us (anyone want a nice couch??), this includes our ST1100.

It’s been hard to move because a) people don’t shop for bikes coming into a Melbourne winter, and b) needing the repair to the ignition barrel contacts makes it a ‘project bike’.

I had a couple chats with Williamson recently who had a good idea and suggested I reach out to the group for help, so here goes:

Is there anyone in Vic who would be interested in collecting and housing our ST, prepping it for sale (repair, RWC etc) and using it as your own in the meantime then being reimbursed any expenses as well as taking a cut of the proceeds when she sells?

Shoot me a message is you’re interested, we can exchange contacts and chat about it in more detail. Our absolute deadline to have the bike moved is 4th May as settlement is on the 5th.

I’m not usually one to call out for help when it’s within my abilities to do it myself, but unfortunately I’m just out of time.

Thanks so much everyone

Yes, this is something I wanted to do, but the stars won't align for me now that we have downsized (50% of previous garage space) and taking on setting-up a replacement (fingers crossed) replacement for the write-off.  The possibility of resurrecting the write-off is also on my mind.

If someone with the garage space, some technical ability puts up their hand, I can help with some of the tasks needed for RWC (chatting with Steve, these are pretty minor).

I would offer, but I am the wrong side of the border (by 7km), and have no way to get it here.

Not sure what's happening with it all as yet, Garry.
I'll let you know when I know...

Hi all, just a quick update:

I believe Lawrence has put his hand up for the job....  :popcorn

Yes, Lawrence and I had a brief chat the other day, sounds like he’s got the skill set, and time on his hands

Does Lawrence need a hand to pick it up

This is the part I’m about to attempt to nut-out; Lawrence isn’t able to pick it up, I’m looking at my options and what I can manage time-wise.

…sadly, we can’t take any opened bottles of booze to NZ with us, so I’m going to have to unload some nice spirits  at some point (…yes, I’m unashamedly willing to barter for help )

I can assist late (from 4:00pm on) Wednesday, Thursday or Friday afternoon.  This will be limited to driving someone to your place, them riding to Lawrence's, then me driving them home.

Re. someone, is this you Steve?  Others in the eastern suburbs are Garry and Nigel??  Hey Nigel, wanna party on Steve's top shelf???

Re. riding, is it worth risking the dodgy ignition switch?   You think you will be able to tape is securely for a 10 to 15km trip?  If we need a trailer, I can't help (new work car is sans tow hitch).

If you think this sort of arrangement can work, we'll confirm on the mobile.

Sorry, wasn't aware of this thread.
I just got back from Rushworth today and brought back our tandem trailer with the bike rack fitted. A bit overkill I know but it had our mini excavator on it.
Happy to get involved with the transport of 1100.
Probably our biggest issue is the RTE this weekend.
Having said that, I finish at 2 pm every day.
Let me know where and when. Have plenty of tie-downs and ramps just need maybe 2 bods to help with the loading.
Let me know.

Re. riding, is it worth risking the dodgy ignition switch?

Thanks for the offer of a lift, I don’t think I’d want to risk the ride to be honest, didn’t have as much luck keeping the key in place recently as I did when I brought it back from the neighbour’s.

Hey Nigel, if you’re willing and available, I might need to take you up in that offer. I’ll shoot you a text tomorrow and work out a good time to chat.

Cheers,

Let me know the arrangements and I try to get there, if just for moral support.

Ok, we’ve got a plan forming! Spoke with Nigel today, we’ve pinned down Wednesday afternoon as our best time. I’ve left a voice message with Lawrence to make sure that works for him, haven’t heard back yet but I’ll follow him up again tomorrow.

Wednesday 3 May?  I'm free that afternoon.  What around 3:00pm or 4:00pm your place?

Just a heads up...Lawrence isn't the best at responding to voicemail etc so I'd keep trying to ring him...or maybe at the very least, send him a text message..  :thumbs

Correct, Wednesday 3rd, aiming for around 2:30ish at my place you’re more than welcome to pop along if you’re feeling up for it.

Thanks for the tip, I’ll give him another try in the morning

Hi all, wanted to stop by with an update for anyone following along at home.

Lawrence took my bike into his fold, stripped her down and found some pretty surprising discoveries of repairs needed (surprising when you consider she has never missed a beat on me travelling between SA -> VIC -> QLD and everywhere in between).  He put in a lot of work and came out with the bike looking and riding better than it had in many, many years!

In the end, after all Lawrence’s hard work, including a full cut & polish, the bike looked absolutely amazing and attracted a good dozen enquiries within the first day the listing was active. In the end she went to a new home with a ‘Stay Upright’ instructor, so I know she’s in good hands. I mentioned OzSTOC to Adam, the new owner, so you may see him around here at some point (if not already).

Selling off the ST winds up the least loose end I needed to tidy up in Aus, so now we’re busy settling into life in NZ, and planning for my Eldest’s first visit these school holidays. Thanks for all the help guys

Good to hear that things worked out pretty well all round.  And thanks to Lawrence for going above and beyond to help out a colleague.

I'd buy him a beer at our next meet, but he doesn't drink beer, so I'll drink it myself.
