Electric bikes?  Wonderful things, I'm told by an owner, but no thanks.  I actually enjoy refuelling at a servo and knowing I can have the reassurance of a 5 litre container in the pannier if in doubt about my range or fuel availability.

I agree with you Biggles plus will electric bikes be capable of towing a camper trailer bigger than a peanut.

Torque and power in the bigger ones isn't the issue.  They have it in spades.  It always comes back to the question of range.  The friend I mentioned has a HD Livewire and says it's a great bike to ride.  But he can't join our Saturday rides because he's flat out doing 250km without a recharge.  The range is improving- the best I've seen is around 450km, but the battery is huge and the price huger, and you're still not going to do a big day like we can.

EV's have come a long way in 15 years or so.  First ones I drove were in the car pool at work.  A Toyota Prius when they first came out in AUS back in around 2005, and then a Honda Civic, around 2009.  From memory, the Civic was a class above the Prius - after all, it was a Honda.

Test drove quite a few EV's (full electric, plug-in hybrids & normal hybrids) when looking for a new car for Helen (although we did settle on a diesel Kia Sportage - still waiting for delivery after 7 months).

In my view, 10 to 15 years as seen some huge developments in technology, probably in terms of electric motors, batteries and management systems.  If the (seemingly exponential) improvements in recent years are any guide, just the next 5 years will probably result in Ranger / Hilux type 4WDs and trucks that'll be more than capable of 1000km between charges, even towing a caravan.

Not sure if there'll be motorbikes capable of such distances, but I'm guessing 500km will be considered adequate.  I'd be pretty sure that manufacturers wont be designing motorbikes with Far Riders in mind.

No, I don't think they ever have, but putting 29 litre tanks on STs and 40 litre tanks on Beemer off-roaders was very helpful.  The real issue for Ironbutters or FRs is the refuel time.  We can work with 350km range, but can't wait 30++ minutes for a recharge.

Worth a look:   :popcorn

Energica claims their new model has the longest range of any electric motorcycle...

https://electrek.co/2022/05/31/energica-unveils-experia-electric-motorcycle-its-new-long-range-green-tourer-fast-charging-included/

As can be seen, touring range is still pretty ordinary...209 km, while a city range of 420 km isn't so bad, I guess...

I did a bit of a search and found this: https://www.energicaofnewengland.com/energica-experia

Quote
Energica is the only manufacturer to offer three levels of charging. The Experia can be charged from 0-80% in just 40 minutes on a Level 3 / DC Fast Charger at a top rate of 24 kW. Other charging options include Level 2 (240V) and Level 1 (120V) systems.

And then there's this: https://australianelectricmotorco.com/everything-about-energica-experia/

Quote
Charge time: 1 hour on DC fast charge, 6 hours on slow charge

We went to the Electric Dreams Exhibition at RNA Showgrounds on Saturday, and there were quite a variety of bikes and Scooters already on the market.

The Supernova looks most like the sort of bike I might consider, although I'd need some panniers and/or a topbox.  At $12,290.00 plus on-road plus delivery charges they're still a bit rich for my pocket.  I might just have to eke out the last drop of petrol, or convert Rubina to run on disposed fish shop oil.

This one sure does a good job of hiding its battery.  Compared with the Savic that is 80% battery!  :eek
That said, at $12,990 for the base Savic model (claimed at one stage) you get a lot more bike for your buck.

All good points have been made. I just like a motor bike to be a motor bike.
I have read a lot of stuff lately and dont know how much of it is fact or fiction about the electric situation.
Cost of electricity and where will it come from?

Eg at Docklands they cant put fast chargers in apartment blocks without upgrading the electricity in the block and the substations etc. and thatis for two chargers. Imagine the wait at servos for charging. Compare the times against petrol fills and how can it ever work. Etc.
I believe we will be using both for years to come until pricing, range, taxes or fuel prices all change to make electric vehicles more attractive or essential. Maybe also the technology to charge faster as well.

Every one will be required to have 100 KVA cummins or Cat powered genset installed in their house, and a 50KVA mounted in a trailer in case they get stuck in between charge points.

If this quote from the Tesla display is any indication:

"If those are all 300W panels (and they look a little small for that), then the optimum output would be 2.7kW. That means it would generate less than 50 miles of range a day extended or a third of that folded up."

then I'll need more than the 30 panels I already have if a car is to be added to my home requirements.  And I'm going nowhere in the past 3 days since at no time did my home battery get more than 25% charge with the normal home use demanding the rest.

Would the author say I couldn't mow my lawn today because I used all my fuel in my car?  Unless of course he has an electric mower.

Unless of course he has an electric mower.

Which reminds me, I think I told this story before, but couldn't find it, so here goes ....

A while back, I was suffering from some old back and shoulder injuries, couldn't start or push the Briggs & Stratton, Helen could do both, and mowed the lawns.  The B&S was a bit difficult to start, but in the end it died.  Time for a new mower she said, off to Bunnings and we come home with Ryobi 36V cordless mower.  Best thing I've ever bought for Helen.

Come on fellas, show 'em how much you care.

Panels are now 370 Watts and bigger.

We are considering:

28 X REC 370W TWINPEAK SOLAR PANELS

Solaredge DC Optimisers

Solaredge 8.25 kW Inverter.

I reckon if we all try hard enough, the thread will be well and truly hi-jacked and morph into a thread on lawn mowers, chain saws, wood heaters, or into the benefits (or not) of home solar systems.
