Animal collisions

From today's Courier Mail:

New NRMA Insurance claims data showed there were 17,200 car crashes with animals throughout 2021 and 2022.

Dubbo, in NSW, was found to be the country’s worst location with 165 animal collisions, followed by Canberra in the ACT with 111.

In Queensland, St George was the worst location (17). Mt Gambier was the worst spot in South Australia (13) and, in Western Australia, the highest animal collisions were recorded in Margaret River (26).

Kangaroos accounted for close to 90 per cent of the animal-vehicle collisions in Australia.

The iconic Aussie creature was involved in 14,501 (88 per cent) of the collisions, followed by wallabies (777 claims), wombats (631) and deer (317).

Of the animal collisions in that period, about 10 per cent of cars were write offs.

Speaking of Skippy...I nearly hit one a few weeks back.
T'was very late at night with no traffic to speak of when I spotted Skip parked just left of the centre line.
Thankfully he stayed put but I reckon I missed hitting him by a bee's dick!

I hit this one in Bundey on the Goyder Highway in 2015.  I'd only had the Versys for three months at the time.  It's still going strong.

Bike fared well that day, not so 4 weeks back.  Still waiting on a settlement offer from Swann, asked for an email or letter on Monday (due to conflicting advice in their letter and then 'phone call), I sent another email today.

Coming up to 4 years for my roo on a road I regularly travel (to get to & from the place that pays the bills).

Still ultra cautious through there, but also scanning constantly in the areas they are common in.

Record at work goes to a colleague who's done 4 roos in her 45km each way trip, but 2 in last four years. At least she wasn't on a bike.

I had never really considered deer as a potential collision (certainly to the extent that I consider skippy, emu and wombats), nor have I ever had a near miss with one. I know they are a potential threat - need to up my vigilance. I put goats before deer personally speaking as a target - especially out Broken Hill/Cobar way. Right Wendy?

Interesting that those stats did not include feral furniture....

Not feral furniture but a wombat in the right lane of the Calder freeway between Woodend and Gisborne I think.
We were coming home in the cruiser late one night when I saw a car with lights on off the road to the left so I moved into the right lane to give them room, as you do. As we did that we went over the top of a dead wombat. If I had been on the bike or in the pug it would have been a different storey. I think the car on the left had hit the wombat and it was out of action.


Just missed a large skippy with car and caravan just after hitting wombat cominh home from WA.
Went out and bought a bullbat for cruiser when we got home. Hit nothing since.


Had a fox or similar run between the wheels of ruby on the Black Spur a couple of months ago.


Just close shaves for us.
