Title: New owner, north Central Victoria
Post by: prricey on March 04, 2024, 12:32:27 PM
Hi all,

New owner from Alexandra in Victoria here. Bought my 2002 ST recently for commuting twice a week to South Morang. Have already done 4,000kms plus in the first two months. Just loving the bike. The only change I want to make is to retrofit an electric screen, as mine isn't.

Anyway, ride safe and hit me up if you're wrecking an ST and have the bits for the electric screen lying around  ;-*

Hi Pricey, welcome to OzSTOC.

I commuted to and from South Morang for the past 24 years, but not as far as you (only from St Helena) and only on the ST1300 a handful of times.  But not any more, I've just retired.

Anyways, Alexandra, ie. next door to the OzTOC National Rally 2024 at Mansfield, on the weekend 15 to 17 March 2024.  Whilst it's too late to register and get a rally pack (T-Shirt, patch & pin), it's not too late to attend.  There'll be approx. 50 to 60 attend the Meet & Greet on the Friday afternoon / evening at the High Country Holiday Park, and similar numbers at the dinner and awards presentation on the Saturday evening at the Mansfield Hotel - details on the many threads on this link: https://ozstoc.com/index.php?board=30.0

In addition to the NatRally, we have an RTE each month, details are posted about a month prior, although some (like the NatRally and another to Balranald in May) are posted two or three months ahead.   Here's are summary for 2024:

Re. the ST1300 screen, there was a similar question just yesterday, he was my answer:

My adjustable screen needed a fix a while back, the mechanism is a piece of art, but a poorly designed piece of art.  It seems over complicated and engineered in some aspects, with what appears to be some fixes, probably due to some design failures.

I'm sure it could be retro-fitted, but as you say a PITA, the effort would probably far outweigh the benefit.

Let's hope we can catch-up soon.

Thanks Williamson. Yes, the Alexandra next to Mansfield. Unfortunately I have to work that weekend or I'd be all over the rally.

I have been looking at the fjr1300 screen mechanism and I think it could be made to fit. It is much more solid. I used to own an FJR and stupidly assumed my ST would have an operational screen. I'll let you know how I get on.

Welcome and shame you have to work. If you have any time at all that weekend drop in and say hi.  Look  forward to meeting you.

Thanks for the welcomes all

Bit the bullet and have installed a laminar lip. Sensational bit of kit. Now have a winter setting with the lip on and screen in the full up. And a summer setting with small brackets at the bottom of the screen, tipping it back slightly. Still in the tall position. Plenty of air in that setting.

Whilst not perfect, this set up will do me fine. The laminar lip one inch or so higher than the leading edge of the screen puts the air over my helmet cleanly. Only a hint of turbulence if I'm following a car or have a sideways wind. I can live with that.

Have just ticked over 5,500kms commuting in 2 months. Just loving the bike.

Started with tyre changes today. The Michelin gt road 5s had done 17,000kms and were just touching down on the wear bars. As it's my commuter (twice a week) I didn't want to run them too low.

Got some Dunlop road smart 4s to try and got the pair delivered for $500. Which is $200 cheaper than Michelin pilot 6s. The k1600 guys love the Dunlop's so thought I'd give them a try.

As they don't have any gt road 5s in the country I thought I'd try something new.

Watched a video as it was the first time changing road tyres. I've changed heaps of dual sport tubed tyres but never a tubeless and never a radial.

Front tyre went on easier than some push bike tyres! Was awesome. I bought some proper tyre paste (so not using silicon spray or soap to lube) and it was a revelation. Used my 1 long Michelin and 2 short levers and it was a doddle. I was peaking beforehand. So glad it wasn't hard.

The bead popped on at only 40psi. I reckon   the tyre bead paste is the reason. Will balance it later this Arvo.

Next I will tackle the rear tonight after tea. I reckon that might be a bit trickier.

Found a few drops of coolant under the bike today. Hoping it's just overflow. Have read up on the round and square hole and will investigate over the weekend when I service it.

A service and new tyres! Happy birthday Terrence!

I'll be curious to hear what you think of them as I'm currently running Road Smart 3's on my ST and have been quite happy with their performance.  :thumbs

Front tyre balanced and on. Torqued the axle and pinch bolts to spec. Have about 10,000kms left in the front pads. Must remember that.

Rear tyre half done. Cleaned the splines and have the Loctite moly goop ready. Rubber greased the rear wheel outer seal as it was dry as buggery.

Tyre paste made the rear easier too although it was a prick to get the inside lip on.

Seems to be going ok. Must be doing something wrong.... (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240322/6e964b6dc4747409baaa035fae2922dd.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240322/ee5bbee71898e2fedc880e411c06c600.jpg)

Now I know why Michelin's get so many flats. Their carcasses are so soft!

No way I could have done this to the Dunlop. This Michelin is softer than the tyres I put on my bicycle.

Glad I replaced them as the rear tyre has had a repair as well. Plugged properly from the inside though. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240323/ca91fb113ce1ab3ea2abf81f4bbba3f2.jpg)

Had a few punctures over the years, mostly an Bridgestone and Dunlop though. Can't really recall a puncture on a Michelin.

Scrubbed in the new tyres on the Eildon Jamieson road. They're sensational.  They tip in waaaay faster than the Michelin's. Almost like they start tipping into a corner without you thinking about it. Let's hope they last.

Zero vibes in the bars now. The old tyres should probably have been rebalanced half way through their life.

After the oil change the gear shifts are soo much smoother. Engine is also purring like a kitten.

It is positive RuSTynutz. Loving the bike!

While I still had the old front tyre I thought I'd take a photo from the same angle showing the steeper sides on the road smart. The Michelin is definitely flatter in profile. This would account for the dropping in quickly on the road smart. Definitely turns quicker now.

Also changed the final drive oil and am planning out my driving light install.

Hopefully will get away for a few days on the bike to Albury over Easter. My lovely wife takes the car, camper, kids and dogs and I get to ride. 1,000km review on the Dunlop road smarts 4s. Good tyre. No visible wear yet. Definitely scrubbed in. Front tyre drops in so much faster than the Michelin and once you're cranked over, it's solid as. I'm estimating I'm carryung around 5-10% more entrance and mid corner speed with these.

However, as they change direction more quickly, you are more susceptible to air wash/turbulence from big 4wds and Trucks. The turbulence now seems to make the bike want to "wiggle" slightly. It's not dangerous, just disconcerting at first. Don't really notice it now. It's a small price to pay for the extra corner speed.

Only minor wet riding so far but they seem really solid. Road the Tolmie road and Eildon Jamieson road which both have wet mossy corners already. And I passed through them both just after it had rained.  They didn't lose traction even slightly. Which was surprising.

I've ridden various tyres on those roads wet and found the continentals on my bandit 1250 in particular, attrocious in the damp.

Liking the road smarts. Let's see how long they last. At this rate of KMs I should burn through a set easily this calendar year.

I reckon my ST suffers a little of that too...whether that is due to the Road Smart 3s, I have no idea... :popcorn

Well mine didn't wiggle at all with the Michelin pilot road 5 GTs. But the front end felt almost dull and without much feedback with that tyre too. I'm enjoying the new tyres so much in the twisties now.

I thought the helibars on mine were making it feel like I didn't have weight on the front end. So I kept getting pushed wide (not crazily but noticeably) with the Michelin's.

It doesnt feel like I need to lean forward into a sports crouch with the Dunlop's to get the most out of them. It's a nice change. Makes the ol girl feel almost sporty!

I've found 46psi in the back and 44psi in the front works for me...but then again, me and the missus aren't exactly skinny!  :whistle

Built for comfort, not for speed, I can certainly relate to that!  :grin

Okay, if it's just me on the bike I may or may not reduce the back tyre pressure down to 44psi...Most of the time I don't bother!

New addition (driving lights) on the weekend. Have seen a bunch of skippys and deer on the road recently and wanted to properly blind them. These are 40 watts per side. They compliment the standard lights (with LED globes) really well.

I put a bolt through the mirror bracket as others have done but drilled a hole in the top, rather than the bottom of the mirror cover (sacreligious, I know).

Tried some other mounts but they flexed too much. These are rock solid.

Excuse the messy shed (I have young kids and no time)!(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240409/4411ffebb0f428348c4b21a333e529db.jpg)
