1300 tyres #2
« on: February 12, 2015, 06:11:38 PM »
Hi again folks. An addition to my first post re 1300 tyres: I priced tyres from various bike shops, and found that their prices were pretty well similar. I also priced tyres form the U.S. and found that, due to the crappy Aussie peso, the delivered prices were within a few dollars of, say, Pablo's.

Anyway, I  thought I would do the right thing and buy Australian.

What I wanted were Michelin PR4GT's

Well, no fronts anywhere in Oz. Plenty of rears, but no fronts. And  a shipment was expected sometime in the next month or so. No-ne knew exactly when Wot thuh

So, to cut a long story short: bought the rear from Brisbane, and the front from Jake Wilson in Utah U.S.A. their deliverd prices were very close to what I would pay in Oz.

I reckon it's weird. It's probably gonna cost me 10 bux more to do all that and have them fitted, even tho' I had to get one from the U.S.A

The world is a much smaller place 8)

It seems the PR4GTs are a victim of their own popularity.
No doubt the supply will eventually catch up with the demand, but in the meantime they are losing business here in Oz to Pirelli and others.
For the modern man who lives in the city, riding a bike might be one of the only ways to escape the humdrum monotony. To take off and ride. To be both at one with nature and one with the bike. To feel masculine. Adam Piggott

I wonder what the local price for those tyres will be when that new shipment arrives? ........no doubt a lot more than it is now.

In the mean time I've looked at prices in the US for a few different brands as I'll be ordering for myself in about two months.

At yesterdays exchange of around AU 78 cents for $US1 and for to my door prices for a set including the balancing beads ($US13.98)

Shinko Verge           $AUD346.00
Bridgestone T30 GT  $AUD394.00
Avon Storm Ultra      $AUD455.00
Pirelli Angel              $AUD450.00
PR4 GT                    $AUD500.00

All sizes are for the 1300 with only Bridgestone supplying the 1100 OEM non-GT rear. For me it's going to be a toss up between the T30 and the Angel though the price of the Shinko is tempting.

I have used a few sets of the shrinks on the st11, as has Lionel. Can't really fault them, especially for the price. While only a simple single compound tyre, they lasted as long as PR2s I tried, around 16,000kms. If I could get them in the right size I would use them again.

What are they like in the wet as the tread pattern seems to be meant more for dry roads etc.

I have used them in pouring rain when it has been really windy, with no issues compared to PR2s on the ST1100. I thought the same thing but they work. A Shinto 009 was nowhere near as good life or grip wise, as well as being a very wide 170 tyre

The oz tyre site looks good, may use them next time as price landed is comparable to jakewilson
