Its finally here :-)
« on: May 02, 2020, 07:01:12 PM »
Well it's finally here. After waiting for restrictions to be lifted a bit, I finally picked up my ST1100 today.
And I am a very happy chappy. Bike is in pretty good shape for a 98 model.

It came with an extended screen on the bike but the seller also included the stock screen. This was beneficial becuase the firt thing that annoyed me when I first rode the bike was that the top of the screen was right in my central sight line. So I could eather stratch my head to get a clear view over the screen or duck slightly to get a full view through the screen. I found it extremely distracting so I put the stock screen back on and am much happier with the result.

The only other thing that I will try and tend to asap is the right hand indicator surround has a crack in iton the leading edge. So I will be looking to track down a replacement surround in blue if anyone can suggest where I could source one from?

All in all, I am very happy with my purchase. It certainly is a heavy beast to head out on after not owning a bike for 30 years. Finding my bike legs again is not quite as easy as if i had started with something smaller, but the ST is where I wanna be and I don't regret a thing.

These forums have been invaluable over the last year of doing research and learning everything I could about the bike.
I look forward to getting out there on the road real soon.

Cheers

Many congratulations on a great bike!

I’m sure you will get used to it in time. I got my ST13 in late 2017 after about 25 years of no bike, and I found it took me quite some time to become competent.  I set myself a mental rule of “no filtering for 12 months” because I didn’t feel sufficiently in control of the machine at first. And I would say that it took me near on a year to become confident in slow speed manoeuvring, fine lane control, cornering etc.

I found it helpful to spend lots of time practicing in an empty car park or other open space.
A man rides on his STeed, says “Why am I short of attention? Got a short little span of attention”.

You can call me Steve, with apologies to Paul Simon.

Just take your time. Yes they are a heavy beaST maneuvering at slow speed, but you will get used to it. You will learn very quickly to pick where and how you park. NEVER park 'downhill' where you need to walk it backwards to get out. Hope to catch up soon on an RTE.
Getting wind in my hair while I still have some.

I actually intend to do the carpark thing next week. I'll be taking plenty of time and learning my bike and its manourverability.

Congrats on the "new" bike mate :clap :clap :clap :runyay

In case you aren't already aware even though the ST is a heavy bike it is easy to pick up if dropped thanks to the tip over bars that will hold it up a little :thumb
The following video gives a good example of how to pick them back up if dropped.

Absolutely!  You might feel like a dolt when you drop your ST in a crowded carpark, but you’ll go from zero to hero when they watch how you pick it up :-)

It also helps if you dig out a bit where the wheels contact the ground, circumstances permitting.
