I vaguely remember (as I don't have an ST13) that some slight changes in the way those hoses are routed can reduce the incidence of residue build up, as the low points of the hoses are more prone to being blocked.

Thanks saaz.  Ever the fount of knowledge.  I'll research it on that other fount, the US Owners' site.

I've not told this story here, but when I had the ST1100 I pulled the front forks to bits.  When it came to the RH one, of course I couldn't get the cap off.  I went inside and put the question up on the US Owners' site at 6:00 PM and at 6:10 I had a reply telling me the info I needed to finish the job.  Someone was on the computer in Texas at 2:00 am   :thumb

Nearly as amazing as the Oz site!

here you go,
in the mid / late 60's, AMPOL ran long lead in time,a frame of a series of in depth EXHAUSTIVE tests on just this question.

NO change in petrol consumption
no change in Oil use per 1000 miles

NO PROVABLE EVIDENCE TO SHOW WARMING UP WORKS

since then i have ALWAYS adopted the start and go regime

My next door neighbour has a small diesel truck for his work and even in the coldest mornings he hits the key, throttle and clutch together and roars of down the street with lots of revs. Don't understand why he has had three new motors in 200,000km?

I,m probably a bit late coming to this tread but here goes.A few years back i had a yamaha 750 virago. One day I put on my gear, started the bike from cold and headed out of the drive, turned sharp right, half way round the engine stalled and i nearly went down.Ever since that I run the bike while I,m putting on the gear :beer :beer

Never been one to follow the masses too much but here goes my two bits worth.
Not more than a couple of months ago I too almost tasted gravel rash when my old Bandit shut down mid corner whilst running late for work.
I too now get dressed beside the bike while it's warming up and upgrading to ST1100 will no doubt solve the problem.

many years back I worked in an opencast mine. There was a man there who been driving heavy machines all his life building motorways.Every morning he would check his machine for oil and water, walk around and do visual inspection, climb on board, start the engine, let it idle while he filled his pipe and only then he,d move off.he was a great operator who loved machinery.Sadly he passed away a while back, but it was a joy to watch him work and could he not tell some great stories. :beer :beer

a bit late for me too, but....

start, get dressed ATGATT, then ride gently for 1st K... usually 2 bars in winter, always 3 in summer before I start. I do notice a lot more "clunking" in the tranny when changing from 1st-2nd, and 2nd-3rd for the first few K's, even past 3 bars. Time for a new shot of Texas Tea me thinks.

One other issue for me though.....

1. "full throttle" - what the? I'm too scared for that at any time!

ST1100. Start with the manual choke if it dies without it. Ride out of the yard onto the street about 10 yards then a further 100 yards to the main road slowlyand then ride as normal.
