Knock in engine when pulling hard at low RPM's
« on: July 30, 2012, 07:01:22 PM »
I have noticed that my ST1300 has what sounds like an engine knock (something like fuel detonation) when pulling hard at low RPM's. For example going up Mt Cootha in 3rd gear at 2500 rpm approx.
Anything suggestions? Or am I asking to much.

Also does anyone know of a good workshop in Brisbane?

it sounds like your making your engine labour, now and then it happens to me and I just change down a gear and get the extra revs needed.

Although it may be something else but many people have the same problem with their cages.

Thanks Tipsy, this is what had thought but just had to ask in case.
One workshop suggested that the alternater mat have moved and would have to be relocated. A bit of BS, me thinks.

Definitely labouring it at that. If thats not normal, we both had better find a good workshop.
My tacho tells me that at cruising speed it sits around 3500 RPM. I reckon Mr. Honda must think thats a sweet spot so keep it around that at least.
Cheers.

Definitely change down.

Trying to idle up Mt Cootha in 3rd is a git of an ask even for the ST. On the flat,it will pull away quite nicely.

Nup.  Third is the sweet spot for hill climbing, especially in the twisties.
I only drop back to 2nd for a sharp climbing hairpin.
The ST1300 will pull away without lugging on level ground from 60 in top.
I was on that Mt Cootha ride with Missus Biggles back in the cabin, and we sang up the hill in 3rd at the speed limit they stuck on there of 50 kph.  And Missus B isn't a Twiggy clone (for those who remember that British model).  If you never heard of Twiggy, you can easily imagine why she got the name.
To cap it off, I only use 91 octane.  That's just to scandalise the $1.65 per litre drinkers.   8)
For the modern man who lives in the city, riding a bike might be one of the only ways to escape the humdrum monotony. To take off and ride. To be both at one with nature and one with the bike. To feel masculine. Adam Piggott

My 1100 did that until I changed to the higher octane fuel, no more knocking or pinging from the engine. I try to use BP Ultimate all the time, MUCH better economy and the engine is much happier.

PS: this was prior to my meeting with skippy!!!
